Squad Breakdown: Team insights, Round 12

It was yet another week of outrageous scoring, with the highest ever SuperCoach score recorded for the third consecutive week, incredible.

The Cooma Stallions have continued their charge with 1,521 points to move into 4,087^th overall, getting there!

Unfortunately I skippered James Tedesco rather than Nathan Cleary or Tommy Trbojevic, not to worry, can’t get them all.

I made a late change to trade in Nicho Hynes over David Nofoaluma which paid off, and I managed to save another trade which is encouraging.

Having saved a decent three trades thus far, I’ll likely be utilising four trades in the next two weeks to fully prep my side for the upcoming Round 13 bye week.

BRONCOS v STORM

Thursday, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

Analysis: First off, congratulations to the Broncos who defied all odds to overcome the Roosters in Sydney.

Can they do it again against an understrength Melbourne in Brisbane? I think not, but I was wrong last week so who knows?

As we do know, Melbourne are SuperCoach killers, so I’m not too keen on Broncos players again, but they have shown at times recently they’re improving. 

Keenan Palasia is a very intriguing prospect, he could be an absolute gift for us SuperCoaches IF he holds onto his starting spot for Round 13.

Jordan Riki is due back, so it’s a tough one. Payne Haas will be unavailable due to Origin duty, so that’ll help a touch.

He scored 81 on debut and looked excellent, and he’s priced at just $186,600.

Basically, I’d be waiting until next week to ensure he’s named. Then again, if even benched next week there should be good money to be made regardless.

Do your best to be patient and hold off until next week, but I understand the temptation and need to free up cash this week to allow trades next week.

There’s been some talk of TPJ playing Origin, but I can’t see it happening, he has too many defensive deficiencies and other concerns to leapfrog more proven players.

He looks a great trade this week at an affordable $549k, but with a tough game against Melbourne, a breakeven of 70, and a minor Origin risk it can also wait a week and is probably advised.

Tom Flegler played just 37 minutes against the Roosters and looks less of an option now. He had a try-assist in his 53 points.

However, with Matt Lodge likely missing this week due to suspension, and Payne Haas out next week due to Origin, he should see greater game time so I don’t mind it at $333k.

However, you’re using two trades to get him in and out of your team, probably for $70-100k max cash generation and maybe 50 points in Round 13? Meh…

Tyson Gamble owners will be hoping Anthony Milford doesn’t play his way into a spot for next week when Gamble returns from suspension.

Analysis: Melbourne have a dream run coming up against the Broncos, Titans, Warriors and Tigers.

Nicho Hynes you little beauty! While it was hard seeing him make all that early cash with huge scores, I’m a very relieved owner from last week. 

He’s now made $365k, including a rise of $144k last week, and sits with a breakeven of -50 ahead of a tantalising match up against the Broncos on the points conducive turf of Suncorp Stadium.

Key spine members are again missing so his job security is solid for the time being. 

If any of Hughes/Munster/Papy were to suffer lengthy injuries it’d make Hynes a season-long keeper which adds enticement to the trade despite the huge price.

It’s a hard one to stomach, but with more money to be made and points to continue to flow for a rampant Storm outfit I’d suck it up and pay the money.

Despite recording his lowest score of the season by a considerable margin against Canberra of just 17 points, Justin Olam has my interest at $449k.

I don’t own any Storm players outside of Hynes, and I want in on more of the action, they’re unbelievable even without their stars on deck.

I was at the game in Canberra and was in awe of their second-string team’s incredible class and intensity.

Olam’s base of 25 isn’t great, and he has a high score of just 79 this season, but he looms as a great fifth CTW option to play against certain opposition, which in this case is the entire next month.

With bye coverage next week, Brandon Smith again looms as a good option as dual 2RF-HOK at an affordable $523k with a breakeven of 25.

Harry Grant’s injury setback should see Smith continue to play big minutes. He had his first ton of the year against the Raiders in 60 minutes.

Jahrome Hughes is a serious option this week after missing last week due to injury.

Analysis: With no coverage next weekend I’m not overly excited in any Cowboys.

Jason Taumalolo is likely missing through suspension and has scored just 42 and 53 in his past two games.

He’ll be sub $550k post Origin and we can consider then.

Val Holmes put 138 on the hapless Knights and now has an average of 71PPG at $595k with a breakeven of 19.

He’s a great option for head-to-head players, but with Origin coming up I’d avoid until at least after Round 13 for overall players.

Javid Bowen looked a trap with questionable job security. His position has been boosted enormously due to the lengthy injury of Connelly Lemuelu. 

However, he scored just 28 against the Knights, so while he may well amount to something with a decent run for the club, I’m still not keen.

Analysis: Reece Walsh, damn son! What a little weapon, he’s mesmerising to watch and adds so much excitement to watching the Warriors alongside RTS and Kodi Nikorima.

He has back-to-back tons and is $417k with a breakeven of -71. While he looks an amazing buy, are you really going to trade the likes of Turbo/Teddy to him? Maybe Gutho owners could be tempted, but I’d prefer the proven guys playing in red-hot teams.

A shout out to SC Playbook contributor Walson Carlos who tipped Nikorima to have a career-year during the pre-season.

He’s averaging 71PPG and is in exceptional form of late. He’s a serious option after Round 13.

Lock in Tohu Harris from Round 14 onwards.

TIGERS v DRAGONS

Friday, 7.55pm, Bankwest Stadium, Sydney

Analysis: The Doueihi train finally slowed down with 45 points against the Warriors including 18 points in goals.

My concern with him at the price wasn’t on his form or effort, more the Tigers consistency which was again on show against the Warriors.

To be fair, in SuperCoach we just want to see points scored rather than results, and the Tigers did put on 26 which is certainly reassuring.

At $702k with a breakeven of 101 I’d probably avoid this week due to the Tigers horrid run post Round 12 where I think he is probably a sell anyway.

How horrid: Panthers, Eels, Storm, Rabbitohs, bye.

While in the same boat regarding the draw, David Nofoaluma’s availability at CTW (rather than Doueihi’s 5/8), $565k price tag and proven ability to score well in tougher match ups makes him still a buy for me.

However, I wouldn’t expect to play him in your CTW too often from Round 14-16, he is a genuine season-long keeper though. I like him.

Luciano Leilua has shifted to the right edge alongside Doueihi and Nofa so expect that side to see plenty of good attacking ball.

Mass owners of Jake Simpkin, Stefano Utoikamanu and Shawn Blore will be praying the SuperCoach Gods deliver them places in the team next week with some increased minutes.

Analysis: Max Feagai is highly regarded at the club. He’s $231k with a breakeven of 11 and plays Round 13.

He scored 67 last week, and just 7 points in 36 minutes the week prior. When the 7 drop out of his rolling average his breakeven will drop significantly so he should make great coin.

He’s an option next week if he recovers from his head knock having missed selection this week as a result.

I’m not interested in anyone else at the Dragons this week, Jackson Ford is a watch on minutes/output this week.

However at $360k and huge job security issues it’ll be hard to make a case.

Analysis: It’s hard not to find a good buy in this side… I’ll try keep it semi brief.

The time to buy Stephen Crichton was probably a month ago when he bottomed at $382k. He’s now $546k with a breakeven of 82 which he could smash against the Dogs.

He could still be an excellent purchase, but outside of those scores of 123 and 85 in recent weeks he hadn’t scored above 60 this season.

Ball hog Paul Momirovski at centre isn’t good for Charlie Staines, but I’ll still be playing Staines in my starting CTW this week.

Matt Burton is a decent buy this week coming off his 123 against South Sydney.

He’s $447k with a breakeven of 23. He does have low scores in him with an only okay base of 25BPG, but you just have to back he and the Panthers to rack up the attacking stats.

There is some chat that he’s an Origin bolter as Freddy Fittler loves him, but surely not?

Jarome Luai is dropping in price big time with back-to-back scores of just 41 and 23 for a breakeven of 123.

He could hit that mark easily against the Dogs though. If I knew he wasn’t playing Origin I’d get him in this week, but I’ll be waiting till next week to see if he’s called up as it is fairly likely.

Nothing to add about million-dollar man Nathan Cleary, boss…

I sold Kurt Capewell last week, he scored 73 in 80 minutes, that included a huge play that included a try, linebreak and several tacklebusts, so the trade was justified big time.

He misses this week due to suspension and then Origin next week so he can be moved on.

Pending minutes for Queensland, I also expect him to play off the bench in Round 14 just two days after Origin 1.

The suspension means Liam Martin will start this week and next, possibly again in Round 14.

At $479k with a breakeven of 54 and attacking upside he’s a decent option, although it’s a short-term play.

James Fisher-Harris scored 52 in 47 minutes. He’ll again be popular this week, but he just doesn’t quite do it for me for some reason. 

Penrith’s depth in the pack just make minutes so hard to come by for him. Especially when he gets early rests when Penrith put cricket scores on opposition which is seemingly most weeks.

Analysis: Luke Thompson jagged an extremely soft try/linebreak against the Titans for a season-high score of 92.

He’s ticking along very solidly, but with the Dogs not playing Round 13 I’m not interested and probably won’t be for the remainder of the season.

He is dual 2RF/FRF positioning though which is so useful this season, so he’s certainly worth a thought come Round 14.

Analysis: Yet another tough match up for the Rabbitohs, it’s been a savage run.

After this game, they have the bye, then it opens up big time with a dream run against the Knights, Broncos, Tigers, Cowboys, Dogs, Warriors and Dragons, wow!

From Round 14, the entire backline will become serious options, but not for now.

We’ll go in depth on all these guys after the Round 13 bye.

Cam Murray returns at lock, interestingly Jai Arrow starts at prop. Good to see that pair starting together.

Analysis: While he was already a reasonable option, the injury to Ryan Papenhuyzen really opens up a spot for Clint Gutherson in Origin camp.

He may play as a bench utility, but if not he’s got to be a huge option as 18^th man.

A blow for those who held, but let’s wait and see what Freddy comes up with next week.

Blake Ferguson is haemorrhaging cash. Owners will be hoping he repays the faith with a big score next week before being immediately sold. I’m sitting him outside my 17 this week.

Isaiah Papali’i bounced back this week with 98 points to stop a free fall in cash. He’s $744k with a breakeven of 126 which should drop significantly if he can score well this week.

He’s a prime trade in target at a cheaper price next week.

If Angus Crichton is suspended for Origin 1, Ryan Matterson will come into contention for the Blues.

As such, I’m on the fence whether to buy this week or not. At least we’ll know the outcome of Crichton tonight.

Matto only played just 59 minutes against Manly for 47 points. I’ll try to wait until next week to trade in if other moves allow it.

The news that Harry Grant will likely miss Origin one means Reed Mahoney likely plays for the Maroons, especially as he was a chance anyway.

I had him pegged as a must-have at a discount next week, but the Grant injury means it’s one we can save on.

With a 5RA of 65PPG, Mitch Moses is an option for anyone wanting to trade Sam Walker. But I think Jahrome Hughes is far better despite the higher price.

Analysis: James Tedesco couldn’t match the likes of Cleary/Turbo last week but looked great for his 97 points to now sit with a -11 breakeven.

Key injuries to the Roosters and a minor slide in form should reduce risk of him being rested over Origin pending bumps and bruises.

Sam Walker is being moved on by masses, but for who? I get he has a 125 breakeven, but the options are pretty slim, especially for Round 13.

Jahrome Hughes is the man if any, Matt Burton is an option too for far cheaper.

I’m likely to just hold and play as a vital number in Round 17. 

If Angus Crichton fails at the judiciary and misses this week followed by Origin next week, he’s a sell candidate at $605k.

However, teams should be relatively well enough set up by this stage to cover him this week.

I think he’s a season-long keeper, and he was missing Round 13 anyway, so I’ll likely just hold.

For teams needing money or numbers though there is some sense in the move.

Analysis: Not a lot doing at my poor old battling Raiders. Corey Harawira-Naera has been a nice trade in, making owners over $100k thus far and sitting with a breakeven of 11.

If the Raiders find some form he has some big scores in him. Their draws opens up after the bye.

Bailey Simonsson has peaked for now at $299k having made owners $95k. Not what we wanted, but at least it’s something. 

With no Round 13 coverage and a breakeven of 48 I’ll be selling either this week or next.

Analysis: David Fifita returns from a two week suspension. He has a breakeven of 152 and should leak huge cash, although we’ve said that many a time before this season with the big unit.

Make serious plans to get him back into your team after Origin one.

Brian Kelly put on a show against the Dogs for 91 points to put himself back in the buy frame.

He’s affordable at $470k with a breakeven of 36 and a decent match up this week. Do note however the Titans play the Storm next week.

He’s a bit of a rollercoaster this season with four scores over 50 and four scores under 50 for an average of 57PPG.

I don’t mind him as a bye coverage purchase, but he’s hardly knocking down the door after promising so much.

KNIGHTS v SEA EAGLES

Sunday, 4.05, McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle

Analysis: Mitchell Barnett and Connor Watson played 42 and 41 minutes respectively against the Cowboys, this has to change.

SuperCoach bias aside, they’re two outstanding footballers who need more time on the park.

We’ve held this long, continue to do so until Round 14 where we can sell if nothing changes.

Provided Tyson Frizell and Kalyn Ponga play Origin, Barnett should get 80 next week and kick goals.

Both are again strong sit candidates outside your 17s this week.

I’m slightly eyeing off a discount Bradman Best next week at a bargain price, but he’ll have to show plenty this week to be considered.

David Klemmer played just 41 minutes last week and is struggling to make a case as a buy.

Kalyn Ponga returns which is excellent news for the whole team.
