Focus on depth people!

That’s the reiterated message of the week.

Many SuperCoaches came unstuck last week with all the post-Origin restings and other issues that left squads short of quality, some even without 17 available players.

 It’s only going to get worse as the season goes on, but there’s still time to rectify any concerns.

If you have deadwood in your side that are injured long-term or struggling to make first grade, e.g. Spencer Leniu, Shawn Blore etc. try and move those guys on before guys that are locked into 17s for the season, even if they aren’t setting the world alight. Any additional number will be vital from here on out.

The Cooma Stallions had their best week of the year scoring 1,326 points for a round finish of 145^th, moving into 660^th ranking overall.

Hopefully the rise can continue through a tough period for us all.

Let’s take a look at the Round 15 teams.

BRONCOS v RABBITOHS

Thursday, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

Analysis: Brisbane are a shambles and without Round 17 coverage they don’t interest me at all.

Tevita Pangai Jnr is a season-long keeper, while Payne Haas will be a priority target come Round 18.

Selwyn Cobbo has a breakeven of -26 and is bottom dollar, but as a winger in a struggling side he’s just one tryless match away from his price rises hitting a wall.

Job security is also going to be an issue going forward.

Analysis: The Bunnies terrific run continues with games against the Broncos, Tigers, Cowboys, Bulldogs, Warriors and Dragons.

Latrell Mitchell is a huge POD option at just $580k, he could do anything over the next fortnight.

However, with two Origin games looming and no Round 17 coverage it’s hard to justify trading the likes of Turbo/Gutho/Teddy etc. to him.

Alex Johnston went huge for new owners last week with another big ton.

He’s still affordable at $554k with a breakeven of -71.

With his horrible base there will be some low scores at times, but the tons should balance it out easily.

He should continue to bag tries with the upcoming draw and will make strong cash in the meantime.

He’s a season-long keeper that can be benched on the odd tougher game in the back end of the year.

With the Bunnies getting the likes of Jai Arrow, Damien Cook and Cam Murray back, Cody Walker becomes a near must.

He continues to score in that 60-90 range and is going to ton up in the next few games at some stage.

Importantly, he was sweeping both sides of the ruck against the Knights despite Latrell’s presence, this bodes extremely well for his SuperCoach scoring potential.

Adam Reynolds is a sneaky halfback option with Round 17 coverage that hasn’t been spoken about much.

He’s just $400k and is in 0% of the top 20,000 ranked teams.

I don’t see him as a keeper, but he’s a decent bye coverage option who could rack up a stack of goals if the Bunnies go on the run we’re expecting them too.

Not for me, but worth consideration, probably only for anyone who’s saved a few extra trades.

Campbell Graham would be an option, but the fact he’s likely next in line for an Origin backline spot should an injury or suspension hit is a worry.

I also don’t like him on the right edge as the Bunnies are so left edge dominant.

Dane Gagai on the left edge is a massive play at low ownership. His CTW base is elite and he should jag plenty of attacking stats in coming rounds.

Many will stay off due to his lack of Round 17 coverage, POD!

COWBOYS v SHARKS

Friday, 6pm, QCB Stadium, Townsville

Analysis: Val Holmes has a breakeven of 112 which is big, but certainly not unachievable.

With two Origin games upcoming I’ll be waiting until Round 20 to recruit as the Cowboys face the Roosters and Storm post Origin 3.

With games against the Sharks, Knights then Origin effected Rabbitohs in Round 17 it’s a pretty nice draw ahead for the Cowboys despite their hardly convincing form.

No backline players really interest me as I don’t rate the side too much, despite the draw.

Jason Taumalolo is getting decent enough minutes but he isn’t delivering much at all.

He’s averaged 59MPG the past three weeks, but has only managed 46PPG in that time.

Perhaps he’s carrying a niggle of some sort because it just doesn’t add up.

He’s very cheap at $514k with a breakeven of 108, but he hasn’t shown enough of late to really warrant buying just yet. 

I’d eye him off in coming weeks at a bigger discount, hopefully having shown a little more output.

Still no Heilum Luki.

Analysis: A few decent options have emerged at the Sharks who provide Round 17 coverage.

Shaun Johnson scored 79 against the depleted Panthers and has a 3RA of 59PPG.

He’s affordable at $495k with a breakeven of 35. He’s dual HFB-5/8 which is invaluable.

He’s an absolute SuperCoach star when fit and firing, evidenced by his 68PPG average last season.

However the injury risk is still a concern, as is the chance of a rest if he ever pulls up tight from games, so ideally I think he’s more of a trade in for Round 17.

Jesse Ramien is in terrific form, in particular SuperCoach, despite scoring just 49 last week.

His base this season is elite among CTWs and he’ll benefit from SJ’s return and the Sharks’ improved form.

He’s owned by just 2% of teams and is averaging 65PPG.

With his base and attacking upside I think he’s a terrific buy this week at $509k with a breakeven of 17.

All that being said, CTW has been extremely difficult to nail of late so who knows what’ll happen? We’ll have a good yarn in this week’s podcast about the CTWs we want for the run home.

Ramien is a pretty safe play most weeks but can act as a fifth CTW for the run home to play in friendly match ups.

Siosifa Talakai becomes a HUGE option having been named to start in the back-row for Wade Graham who is out for an extended period.

He’s dirt cheap at $369k with a breakeven of 80, so despite the nice match up this week it’s probably worth waiting to see his minutes and output.

The key is that he’s available as a dual 2RF-CTW which is invaluable.

He was superb when playing big minutes last season where he averaged 55PPG in 59MPG.

If he locks in an 80 minute role he could be anything off the back of his decent work ethic, offloading and tacklebreaking ability.

He also has recent injury history though so I’m happy to wait a week or two.

PANTHERS v ROOSTERS

Analysis: Anyone who sold Nathan Cleary at his huge price will have a nervous couple of weeks of viewing.

Charlie Staines should be sold for anyone who still owns, he has a breakeven of 106 and will begin to plummet cash.

Matt Burton owners will have a decision to make in a few weeks as to whether he’s a season-long hold or a trade before round 17.

Pending a possible low score this week, he should max out at around $600k.

With his dual 5/8-HFB positioning I think he’s a solid option to hold or trade either way, but I’m sure most sides will have far more urgent issues than him!

As tempting as Cody Walker is, it’ll be hard to stomach selling Jarome Luai at $444k for him.

I’m not a Luai owner, but I’d be tempted to hold. Tough one, good luck with the decision!

Viliame Kikau is out and can be sold.

Analysis: The Roosters have two tough matches upcoming against the Panthers and Storm.

As such, I’d be hesitant buying any of their players this week.

They then face the Bulldogs in Round 17 which is where I’ll likely be bringing in Daniel Tupou as one trade.

Sitili Tupouniua should be locked into an 80 minute role following news of club legend Boyd Cordner’s retirement this week.

He’s very attack reliant, but he will be an option in a few weeks alongside Matt Ikuvalu.

Angus Crichton repaid the faith of those who held through his suspension with 87 points.

He’s now back up to $653k and is obviously a season-long keeper.

Unfortunately with a likely Origin recall looming he’s probably not a buy until Round 18, so hopefully for non-owners his price doesn’t get out of hand. 

I’m not against anyone buying this week though.

Sam Walker has been named to play but will be in doubt following another injury niggle picked up against the Titans.

He’ll bottom out in price nicely in time for the Round 17 clash with the Bulldogs and may be a nice purchase if his form and body holds up in coming weeks.

If he doesn’t play this week, Joseph Suaalii will likely come in at centre with Joey Manu shifting to 5/8, although they do have alternate options.

He had his third game last week, making $53k to rise to $227k.

He looks pretty lethal in what is a very strong Roosters outfit, so I think bigger scores are coming and he’ll play Round 17 with Tedesco on Origin duty.

However, I wouldn’t be playing him in my 17 the next fortnight unless forced to.

Billy Smith is also on the extended bench which may not be good news for Suaalii, kid can play.

KNIGHTS v WARRIORS

Saturday, 3pm, McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle

Analysis: Not a lot of note for the Knights who don’t play Round 17.

Jayden Brailey is ticking along okay despite a regression in SuperCoach form.

If you can turn him into Harry Grant I like the trade, however there’s no harm in holding if needed.

Ditto Mitch Barnett who probably needs to go, although he’s played mid to late 50 minute games the past three weeks which is okay.

It probably makes sense to move on when possible, but he’s by no means an urgent trade out.

Connor Watson played 80 at 5/8 against the Rabbitohs but couldn’t capitalise with just 34 points to leave him with a breakeven of 94.

With Mitch Pearce back he returns to the bench and is a sell. It’s a shame because if he were starting at 5/8 you’d probably hold and play despite last week’s poor showing.

Again, not an urgent trade despite the likelihood of leaking some cash this week.

The returns of Kalyn Ponga and Mitch Pearce will do absolute wonders for this side.

Analysis: The Warriors have a nice three weeks ahead with games against the Knights, Dragons and Sharks.

Do note though that post Round 17 they face the Panthers and Bunnies, although the Panthers should be missing plenty of Origin stars.

Tohu Harris is bottoming out just in time for Round 17. 

He’s now at $598k with a breakeven of 108 and can be traded in at any stage in coming weeks.

Kodi Nikorima jagged some junktime points against Melbourne to rescue a score of 73 points.

He’s dual 5/8-HFB, plays Round 17, is averaging 71PPG with a breakeven of 83.

He hasn’t scored under 60 since Round 7 (against Melbourne), and has three tons this season.

He’s owned by just 5% of the top 100 ranked teams in SuperCoach and just 2% of the top 1,000, super POD!

Reece Walsh will tempt some at $532k with a breakeven of -13, but like Latrell, what fullback do you move on to him?

He has a 3RA of 104PPG, but news that he’s in the Origin frame should be enough to scare off prospective owners.

Jazz Tevaga starts for the injured Wade Egan and is a close watch on minutes this week, although Egan shouldn’t be out long with a head knock.

DRAGONS v RAIDERS

Saturday, 5.30pm, WIN Stadium, Wollongong

Analysis: Matt Dufty returned to the pack with 21 points against the Bulldogs.

He has a breakeven of 67 and a decent match up with the Raiders this week, however barring a big score his breakeven will soar next week.

Make plans to move him on in coming weeks as he did his job in Round 13.

Ben Hunt also flopped with just 14 points, hold for another week then reassess his spot.

Analysis: Bailey Simonsson, what a man! After a season consisting of nine scores of 40 or below, he was shifted to fullback for a dream match up against Brisbane in freezing Canberra.

It coincided with the only week of the year owners actually needed to play him with players out.

He cracked out 116 points to rise $61k to $346k with a breakeven of -15.

He’ll make plenty of money as a result and looks a decent play at fullback against weak opposition, although Brisbane have a tendency to flatter their opposition, especially fullbacks who they concede the most SuperCoach points to of anyone.

Simo had 20 runs (16 over 8m for 2 points), seven tacklebreaks, two try-assists, and two offloads.

With upcoming games against the Dragons, Titans, then Sea Eagles who will be missing Origin stars, he’s worth consideration.

However, it’s one game and he’s awkwardly priced in a side that’s shown very little form of late.

The move to fullback is obviously key, but there’s probably better options one would think, especially as it’s highly unlikely he evolves into a season-long keeper at CTW which is what we’re after in most trades from here on out.

Corey Harawira-Naera scored okay with 56 points, however he needed a try and linebreak to do so.

His outstanding base stats from the three weeks prior were non-existent as he had just three runs and 21 tackles in 65 minutes (HIA), awful!

It shows he often relies on attacking stats as he doesn’t go looking for ball.

I still don’t mind him as a buy due to his excellent attacking upside, but at just under $500k with a breakeven of 39 he’s getting towards his more accurate price so he’s probably not a value buy as such anymore.

Monitor Matt Timoko who had a stormer in his first game of the season with 83 points.

He’s at just $203k and could be a great cash generator and Round 17 number as a buy next week if he fires again and holds his spot.

STORM v TIGERS

Analysis: Provided Ryan Papenhuyzen returns in Round 16 and pushes Nicho Hynes to the bench it’ll make Hynes a sell for huge profit next round.

Plenty of SuperCoach relevant options here, but most are Origin bound and will miss Round 17 anyway so are hard to consider.

Harry Grant has been named on the bench and is unavailable in Round 17, regardless, I’m a big chance of recruiting him this week.

He’s back and fit and just looks simply lethal on field.

While it won’t be a bye round number, it’s an inevitable trade everyone will make post Origin 3 anyway, so I’m keen to get in early at an affordable price and bank those points.

Even if playing 60 minutes he does enough damage to lock himself in as a keeper.

It’s worth noting though, the Storm play the Thursday after Origin 2, so you’d think he probably doesn’t play more than 60 that week either.

Speaking of keepers, Brandon Smith has been on a tear with a 5RA of 87PPG.

With dual 2RF-HOK positioning he’s looming as a keeper himself even with Grant back on deck, although he has scored six tries in his last six games.

While this won’t keep up, he’s relishing the quicker ruck speed (as are Melbourne), so he could fast be evolving into a pretty regular try-scorer.

Analysis: As per last week’s write up, Daine Laurie, Adam Doueihi, James Roberts, Joe Ofahengaue and Jacob Liddle should all be on the chopping block this week.

The Tigers draw remains tough up until after Origin, but it does open up big time for the run home and importantly head-to-head finals.

As such, there’s no harm in holding Laurie or Doueihi if you like them. Doueihi is out this week due to a head knock but misses a brutal match up with the Storm, that’s good news for owners holding in my opinion.

I think David Nofoaluma is a hold for that nice run home. If the Tigers can find any sort of form post Origin he will be an excellent option to play every week.

Furthermore, I expect the signing of Ken Maumalolo to see Nofa shift back to the right side where he gets more ball on the Tigers preferred attacking edge.

Stefano Utoikamanu has a breakeven of 21 and should be sold either this week or next.

EELS v BULLDOGS

Sunday, 2pm, Bankwest Stadium, Parramatta

Analysis: King Gutho continues to fire and is a huge skipper option this week against the Bulldogs.

Him to Ryan Papenhuyzen or Tommy Turbo will be a popular trade in Round 18/19.

With no Round 17 coverage I wouldn’t look to buy any Eels.

However, Isaiah Papali’i and Ryan Matterson are season-long holds.

For those wondering, Sean Russell has been named ahead of Fergy Ferg in place of the suspended Maika Sivo.

Analysis: Despite a win and Round 17 coverage, I think Luke Thompson is the only SuperCoach relevant player here.

He was solid again with 59 points against the Dragons, however his minutes have dropped of late.

In his last three games he’s played just 51, 61 and 46 minutes for a 3RA of 69PPG.

I wasn’t overly keen anyway, but with his minutes dropping with a few troops back on deck I’m just not enticed by him with his lack of ceiling.

All that being said, as a rock solid scorer with dual 2RF-FRF positioning I’m certainly not knocking anyone who does buy.

I think he’s a buy pending on your personal squad layout. 

He won’t play Round 17 and there’s job security issues so it’s not as straight forward as it looks.

I don’t need cash desperately and I’m happy with my CTW, so I’ll probably avoid, but if you do need to generate some cash and you feel you’re placed okay for the Round 17 bye he’s a good option.

David Fifita came off the bench following Origin and had a HIA, so he only amassed 34 minutes against the Roosters for 47 points.

He dropped over $50k and has a breakeven of 151, so he should be under $700k after this week.

I’m locking him in as a buy for Round 18/19, but it could reap massive rewards to go early.

Reuben Garrick recorded his fourth ton in eight games to push his season average to 73PPG.

He’s owned by 3% of the top 100 ranked SuperCoach teams overall, and 4% of the top 1,000.

At $685k I can’t bring myself to do it, but he’s obviously proven himself as a super POD with great upcoming games against the Titans, Bulldogs, Raiders, Dragons and Tigers.

He busts stacks of tackles, has plenty of runs, and is amassing a mountain of tries and linebreaks in a rampant Manly outfit.

DCE is another POD coming off his 148 with a breakeven of -2, but I’m tipping Turbo to return and steal plenty of his attacking points so I’m not interested.
