POD Hunter: Round 4, unique players to find an edge

Each week we’ll run through a list of potential candidates that fit the bill, owned by under 10% of SuperCoaches at the time of writing that can help us claw up the rankings at a rapid rate.

DOUBLE ROUND POD

Jason Behrendorff – 9.6% ownership

Behrendorff barely counts as a POD and by the time Round 4 starts his ownership will be over 10% one would assume. 

He has regularly looked dangerous bowling at the start of an innings, but as his career has gone on, he is starting to bowl at different stages including bowling the odd over towards the back end of an innings. 

He is in form coming off scores of 76 and 63 in his last two games. He can have a large score with scores of 154 and 114 over rounds in previous BBL campaigns. 

The Scorchers have been really good with the ball too taking 10 wickets in each of their games, so there should be plenty of wickets for Scorchers players over their double round. 

He has dealt with injuries in his career and there are some whispers of a rest, so this is something to consider when thinking about a possible trade in.

Josh Inglis – 7.5% ownership

Supercoach is all about finding the player who will score big next round and perhaps Inglis will be the slightly forgotten man who scores big over the Scorchers double. 

A failure with the bat and large scores from Munro and Marsh recently may mean that Inglis is a player who falls down the pecking order for Scorchers trade ins, especially when you consider the bowling options you might want to trade in too! 

It would be great if he moved back to opening role and I think there is a chance that we see that, but even if he is batting at number 4 in the order he could have the chance to put together a great innings with some power surge action. 

He can go large with scores of 130, 185 and 105 when opening the batting previously. Any wicket-keeper points are an additional bonus.  

Peter Hatzoglou – 4.4% ownership

As I mentioned on the SC Playbook podcast, despite Hatzoglou being the fifth bowler on the Scorchers side, there could be some merit in trading him in during the Scorchers double. 

Even though the Melbourne Stars are on the bye, players such as Maxwell and Couch have very tasty breakevens and are holds if you can manage it. 

This means that the players you are trading in may need to be slightly cheaper because you may not have the salary to trade in certain big guns.  

One player that coaches could turn to is Hatzoglou because he is slightly cheaper and may score a reasonable amount of points over two games. 

He scored over 50 four times last season and if he was able to produce a score like that owners will be very happy.

Tymal Mills – 3.6% ownership

Mills and Supercoach players look to be the major beneficiary of the moved Scorchers games away from the West because it looks like he will be available for both Perth games over their double. 

He was very impressive in his first game and scored a massive 101 points, however, someone called Mitch Marsh overshadowed his Scorchers debut when he played okay on his return. 

Whilst he has low ownership now, I expect him to be the pace bowler people bring in rather than Tye or Behrendorff. He has been in decent form playing T10 cricket before coming to the Scorchers and carried this into his first game. 

SINGLE ROUND POD

Tanveer Sangha – 6.3% ownership

Tanveer is building into the BBL and looks like no flash in the pan after his brilliant debut season. 

He was both economical and took wickets in his spell of 2/20 last match against the Melbourne Stars. 

He doesn’t seem flustered under pressure and seems to know what he wants to execute each over. 

Along the same lines as Kane Richardson last round, Sangha seems to be someone who you can lock away in your side till the end of the year as the Thunder do not have a bye in the tournament. 

His next match up too is against the Heat, a side that traditionally can collapse against high quality spin.

George Garton – 7.3% ownership

We know that the schedule is a big part of the BBL and that dictates a large proportion of our trades. 

Even though Adelaide had the bye last round, it is surprising that Garton is only in 7.3% of teams. 

The resting last game is a concern, but he looks to have a role that will be conducive to Supercoach scoring. 

He has yet to have a large score with the bat (19 and 5) but looks like he could cause some damage during a power surge or at the end of an innings. 

His bowling has been reasonable too with figures of 1/19 and 2/23 in the two games he has played. 

The Strikers bowlers struggled as a unit in their last game against the Scorchers (which he missed) so when he returns he might be asked to bowl some powerplay or death overs where wickets can be picked up.
