POD Hunter: Round 12, unique players to find an edge

2019/20 SuperCoach BBL champion Thommo Aitken takes a look at the best low-ownership options to set you apart from rivals.

POD Hunter

If you’re chasing ground in the overall standings, need a leg up in your head-to-head league, or perhaps like to live on the edge with your SuperCoach selections, you’ll be sure to want to hunt point of difference (POD) players for your side.

Each week we’ll run through a list of potential candidates that fit the bill, owned by under 10% of SuperCoaches at the time of writing that can help us claw up the rankings at a rapid rate.

Also, pay attention to any fixture changes given the current environment the BBL is taking place in.

DOUBLE ROUND POD

Jon Wells – 7.4% ownership

Whilst perhaps not the most exciting pick or trade in, Wells is somebody who could be considered ahead of the Strikers double.

A middle order batter, he is an accumulator and worker, rather than a blaster of the cricket ball.

Originally I thought he was someone who was unlikely to earn a large strike-rate bonus after passing 20, however, his strike-rate for the tournament is 127, which is more than I was expecting.

Five scores over 65 points for the tournament is nothing to sneeze at and Wells may be an option to bring in and chip away at a score over a double.

Jake Weatherald – 7.6% ownership

Weatherald is a quality BBL player, however, has had a tournament reminiscent of Aaron Finch’s BBL 10.

Runs have been hard to come by and as a result a shift down the batting order has occurred.

There were some signs of improvement in his latest match against the Heat where he made 35 runs off 31 balls, his second highest score of the tournament.

He will be unbelievably cheap (around the $60,000 mark) and could be a risk free trade in as you could loop his scores as the Strikers play the opening two games at Adelaide Oval.

Traditionally, this is a venue where big scores can be compiled and Jake has had many great games on his home pitch.

SINGLE ROUND POD

Mark Steketee – 3.8% ownership

The quiet achiever of BBL Supercoach, Sketetee was ranked fifth on player averages leading into the last round with an impressive average of 84 points per round.

He has only played four rounds, but he has scored 108, 92, 161 (double game) and 58.

Steketee is very playable on a single and could be a great trade in to prepare for the double game round that the Heat will have in the final round of the season.

The Heat will be pushing for a finals spot and will need Sketetee firing and bowling well.

Ben Dwarshuis – 2.2% ownership

Ben Dwarshuis has featured a few times in these articles. After taking 5/26 in his latest match, resulting in 132 points, his ownership level will rise before the Sixers next match.

In a similar boat to Steketee he is playable on a single and can be traded in to prepare for the Sixers upcoming final round double.
