Squad Breakdown: Analysing the Round 4 teams

Round 3 put a few smiles back on the faces of deflated SuperCoaches, with a return to some higher scoring efforts making for a much more enjoyable weekend.

While it wasn’t a return to the heights of last season, it was a welcome sight after a fairly dour first two rounds of SuperCoach point scoring.

The first price changes of the season have been initiated, so here’s hoping everyone’s nailed their cheapie contingent and begun to build a bank for fallen guns in coming weeks.

Perhaps Tommy Turbo who dropped $173k and remains with a breakeven of 240?

He should be well under $1m in the next week or two, so get ready to pounce on the best player in SuperCoach.

The Cooma Stallions had a solid week with 1,093 points, and more satisfying was the fact I’ve managed to make just the two trades so far this season.

Late withdrawals to Harry Grant, Liam Martin and Xavier Coates hurt, but we scrapped through the chaos to deliver a respectable week.

The squad is shaping up well across the 1-25, so hopefully a few more rises are on the way.

TITANS v TIGERS

Thursday, 8.05pm, Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast

Analysis: The Titans have a mixed draw upcoming, with games against the Tigers, Eels, Sea Eagles, Cowboys and Panthers.

David Fifita was solid with 72 points against the Raiders in the full 80 minutes which was encouraging for owners.

He dropped $38k which isn’t too bad and has an achievable breakeven of 99.

It’s a big week for him, if he goes near a tonne many owners may quickly regret selling, but if he goes sub 60 odd there’s more money to drop.

If you did hold, I’d be reluctant to sell, last week was ideally the time to pull the trigger.

A situation I would be more okay with trading is if he goes down to someone like Nanai in order to free up funds for Turbo/Cleary in coming weeks.

Beau Fermor is one I underestimated in the pre-season.

With a base of 40 he’s fairly reliant on attacking stats, but he’s been really impressive and is providing them after a poor Round 1 showing.

The more I watch him the more I think he can continue to jag attacking stats to make him relevant.

He’s $440k with a breakeven of -26, available as dual CTW-2RF, so I think now is the time to buy if interested, next week will arguably be too late.

Tino Fa’asuamaleaui is averaging 63 minutes per game and busted out 89 which included a try and linebreak.

I wouldn’t rush to buy off two solid first rounds, but he remains one to monitor.

Analysis: Stefano Utoikamanu is out for a lengthy stint on the sidelines and can be sold after a mediocre few showings for those who invested early on in the season.

There’s absolutely no SuperCoach interest here outside of Kelma Tuilagi who returns from a head knock and remains a hold.

Analysis: Nicho Hynes delivered for those who invested despite the torrential rain.

A late try saw him belt out a monstrous 125 points, making $58k and sitting with a breakeven of just 12.

As per last week’s write up, he continues to accumulate points across just about every category available and looks an exceptional buy with upcoming games against the Knights and Tigers.

With Nathan Cleary’s return looming, and lots running with a Teddy/Papy fullback combo, the question remains as to where you fit him in?

Despite some impressive form, nobody else at the Sharks really interests me.

Cam McInnes is going to be dirt cheap once he returns to a big minute role which won’t be far away.

He has a breakeven of 118 and could be sub $400-450k in no time.

Teig Wilton is enticing for valid reasons, but the looming return of Wade Graham and decent form of Siosifa Talakai is enough for me to avoid.

Analysis: After two rubbish weeks, Kurt Mann finally delivered for patient owners with 86 points in 66 minutes.

He had 40 tackles, two try contributions, one linebreak and one line-assist.

Unfortunately I suspect lots of owners probably sold last week. Another to keep an eye on in coming weeks.

Popular buy Jake Clifford and Chris Randall struggled with 31 and 27 respectively.

Clifford in particular can be forgiven a bit due to Mitch Barnett’s send-off which made life tough for the entire side.

Randall played just 59 minutes and has been very underwhelming so far, he’s not the safe play in 17s we’d anticipated.

He made $24k and has a breakeven of 22, so owners (most of us), really need a decent score this week to stop that breakeven heading north.

With Lachlan Fitzgibbon and Mitch Barnett out long-term, Brodie Jones has been handed a starting edge role, much to the despair of Jirah Momoisea owners.

Jones returns from injury and COVID protocol, I want to see how his minutes play out in coming weeks before investing at a very tempting $275k.

Analysis: I’m not going to waste any unnecessary time on Izack Tago and Taylan May who combined like 10-year NRL veterans.

Tago still isn’t owned by 33% of all teams, get this sorted please…

May can be brought in either this week or next following a ton in his first game of the season.

If Penrith had easier opposition I’d probably buy this week and play, but with a tough game against the Rabbitohs and plenty of rain predicted for Sydney I’ll wait in case of injury.

The fact we have the trade boost option up our sleeves helps with not needing to go early on cheapies with a thought to freeing up two trades the following week.

While it’s still early days, I suspect he’ll keep his spot in the team over Charlie Staines when Brian To’o returns.

Stephen Crichton is looking terrific with a 67 point average, but that’s bolstered fairly significantly by the goal-kicking duties which he’ll now lose to Nathan Cleary.

It’s funny how we talk often about pedigree in SuperCoach and how it counts for so much.

Players who have always been solid SuperCoaches, but always a tier below the guns in their position, came back to the pack this week.

Viliame Kikau (31), Api Koroisau (32) and Isaah Yeo (53) all struggled to put many points on the board after strong opening weeks.

This isn’t to say they can’t come good and push keeper status this season, but it does teach us that we shouldn’t ignore large quantities of past data based on one or two good weeks bolstered by attacking stats.

Kikau who was initially a cash grab with upside now has a breakeven of 57 and may not make any more cash after going up just $29k this week.

Ditto Api who made $30k and has a breakeven of 60.

Regardless, all remain holds for the time being.

Nathan Cleary returns for his first game of the season, but with likely a wet weather game against grand finalists South Sydney, there’s absolutely no need to go early.

Let’s take a look and make sure he doesn’t suffer like Turbo early on under the altered game conditions.

Analysis: The Rabbitohs reminded us what they’re capable of with a convincing win over the Roosters.

After this week’s clash with the Panthers, the Rabbitohs draw is mesmerisingly good.

They face the Dragons, Bulldogs, Tigers, Sea Eagles, Broncos, Warriors, Raiders, Tigers, Titans and Dragons, crikey!

I’ll dive into them far more from next week as Cody Walker, AJ, Latrell, Graham etc. all will become amazing buys at discount rates.

My boy, Cam Murray went bonkers with 129 points, and looked glorious in the process, as he generally does.

I had him in my pre-season team up until the concern around his disrupted prep, bugger!

He now has a breakeven of 6 leading into round 4, and played a huge 77 minutes following last week’s 73.

While this game time probably won’t continue every week, gee it’s encouraging under Jason Demetriou.

Jai Arrow continues to punch out big minutes and rock solid scores without any attacking stats.

WARRIORS v BRONCOS

Saturday, 3pm, Moreton Daily Stadium, Redcliffe

Analysis: Not heaps to report at the Warriors with the likes of Euan Aitken and Josh Curran ticking along well.

Eliesa Katoa played limited game time due to an eye injury on the weekend and only scored 20 points, a cruel blow for his cash growth potential.

Addin Fonua-Blake has been disappointing despite looking really good in actual NRL.

He’s averaging a touch under 60 minutes and looks explosive, however his average of just 51 points can be put down to the fact he’s had just two offloads in three games.

Wet weather hasn’t helped, but he won’t be a keeper unless this aspect of his game comes back quick.

I think he’s a hold, but he’s certainly on the chopping block.

Analysis: I’m getting over writing about Kotoni Staggs letting me down, he’s had just 16 runs in three games.

It’s a huge knock on the Broncos for not getting their best strike weapon early ball, but accountability has to come back to Staggs for not looking for anything extra.

I’m holding, like last week, he was a whisker from 60 points had Adam Reynolds held onto his offload on the line.

I just can bring myself to sell at under $400k, with a game upcoming against the Warriors.

They then face the Roosters and Panthers which is a huge concern.

Pretty well copy-paste for Selwyn Cobbo who I was surprised to see is owned by a fairly hefty 25% of teams.

Payne Haas played just 58 minutes for a second straight score of 67 to sit with a breakeven of 64.

He’s been rock solid and probably finishes the season as the top scoring FRF.

As per the pre-season plan though, I have far more priorities with my cash in guys like C.Walker, Turbo, Cleary etc.

Kurt Capewell has been named on an extended bench as he battles a calf problem, interesting to see Jordan Riki named.

Analysis: Tommy Turbo dropped $173k and sits with a breakeven of 240.

He should be sub $1m after this week with more cash to drop, get ready to pounce.

While he’s looked underwhelming, Manly have played in heavy wet weather every week, so he could be ready to tee off once dry weather footy comes.

Get a plan ready, because you won’t want to wait one week longer than you have to.

Reuben Garrick is in the same boat, he dropped $78k this week and sits with a breakeven of 111 which is certainly achievable.

He will likely bottom out in coming weeks at around $600k at a significant discount.

Haumole Olakau’atu disappointed for new owners, including yours truly, with 35 points in a concerning 66 minutes.

I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt in bog conditions which would have been extremely heavy under foot.

I think he’s a great buy for the season regardless, but with a breakeven of 51 you can certainly have another look.

Ethan Bullemor could have gone either way as a purchase, unfortunately for owners he’s playing limited minutes off the bench, scoring 12 points and now has a breakeven of 58.

I think I’d sell if I owned because I think he’ll only leak cash barring any further injuries. Josh Schuster coming back soon will only make things harder.

Analysis: Brad Schneider delivered for SuperCoaches with 79 points, leaving him with a -64 breakeven.

A big final 20 minutes will do wonders for his job security, if you don’t own he’s worth getting in.

Provided you have decent options, I’d be hesitant to play him in 17s in the next two weeks against the Sea Eagles and Storm, but the goal-kicking does help his floor a lot.

Tom Starling was terrific with 70 points, but playing just 55 minutes is the worry with tough upcoming opposition.

At $378k he’s an okay buy, but under that game time I’d prefer to find the funds for Harry Grant.

Jordan Rapana was excellent on return from suspension with 88 points, including five tacklebreaks and three effective offloads.

One to watch in coming weeks if the Raiders can show some consistent form against tough upcoming opposition.

COWBOYS v ROOSTERS

Saturday, 7.35pm, QCB Stadium, Townsville

Analysis: New Peta Hiku owners would’ve been distraught watching him score just 28 points, despite the Cowboys putting on 38 points.

The good sign though is that the side are looking decent in attack, so hopefully opportunities arise with ball in hand.

He made $38k and now sits with a breakeven of 23, so a score this weekend against tough opposition is vital for his potential cash generation.

Jeremiah Nanai, you little ripper! The kid is an athlete, busting out a tonne thanks to a hat-trick of tries, all off kicks meaning no linebreak bonus.

He made $60k and has a breakeven of -6, making him a terrific buy, but far from a must-have.

He has been a bit reliant on attacking stats thus far, but at $400k I think he’s worth the investment on talent alone.

It’s a funny game SuperCoach, Jason Taumalolo was on fire with a try-assist and some dangerous runs, then didn’t finish the game as the Cowboys lead was comfortable!

Regardless, he knocked out a solid 59 points and looked to be return to some touch of his old form, despite having a long way to still go.

I think anyone looking to sell is mad, with tighter games will come bigger minutes. And hence scores.

Tom Dearden tonned up and is averaging 78 points with a breakeven of -24.

With certain money to be made he’ll rightly entice plenty at $453k, but is it just going to be a copy of Jake Clifford last week?

I’d prefer go to Dylan Brown as a stepping stone to Cody Walker/Cam Munster. Better team, better run.

Analysis: Rito Roosters, you’ve had your time to dust the off-season cobwebs, the draw opens up, so your SuperCoach scoring better do the same.

Yes Sammy W, I’m looking at you.

After a tough start to the season, they now face the Cowboys, Broncos, Warriors, Dragons, Bulldogs and Titans.

While they’ve been unconvincing outside of the Manly belting, they should start putting a few scores on.

I wouldn’t invest yet as we want to see them deliver before buying into hype that hasn’t yet eventuated, but if they click this week they’ll become far more popular next week.

James Tedesco, Joey Manu, Daniel Tupou could all become nice pick ups in coming weeks.

Billy Smith has based 30 in back-to-back games, we just need some attacking stats to fall his way.

He had 14 runs last week, and 19 the week before, so if he starts jagging a few tries on the end of this stellar backline, big scores may be imminent.

We will reassess this contingent next week if they deliver up north.

No Joseph Suaalii is good news for Smith and Momirovski owners.

Angus Crichton has been named on the bench and is a reluctant sell for owners.

Analysis: Melbourne’s SuperCoach talent stepped up despite losing to Parramatta.

Cam Munster was exceptional and looks as fit as he’s been in years, scoring 121 with only one try-assist!

He had nine tacklebreaks, three line-assists, one linebreak and 16 runs!

Choosing between he and a bottomed out Cody Walker with a soft draw could prove a pivotal decision in the short-term, long-term we’ll likely want both.

Ryan Papenhuyzen also tonned, a decision looms in coming weeks whether to sell he or Teddy to Turbo.

I suspect Papy will be a hold, but if there’s a $200k difference it’ll make the decision tougher.

I’m a bitter non-Josh King owner. Who in the world saw a try-assist and two line-assists coming from the big fella?

He starts at lock again, and while he’s not a keeper, he’ll make more cash before being sold at peak price.

I do think come game day Nelson Asofa-Solomona will move to the bench, King prop, and Smith lock. Either way King will play less minutes, but the game time is still good.

So do non-owners invest, or have we missed the jump having made $70k last week?

It’s a tough one and will come down to who you would move on at FRF, with every team being different.

With a -32 breakeven I think it’s worth finding a way to get him in.

Harry Grant is an excellent buy this week or next.

Xavier Coates returns after being a late scratching last week.

This looks the game to pick a skipper.

Analysis: Talatau Amone is nearing the chopping block with just 17 points against the Sharks, and upcoming games against the Eels, Rabbitohs, Knights and Roosters.
