Weekly wrap: Round 11 studs, duds, injuries

As Thursday night rolled around, SuperCoaches across the country were left in disarray. With Preuss not brought back in, and Hayes listed on the extended bench due to the Port coaching staff’s apprehensiveness regarding his wet weather abilities (fair enough tbh), all hope looked lost.

Some coaches held, some coaches traded; but one thing was unanimous, we were all in for a hell of a week one way or another. Or were we?

Funnily enough, despite all the chaos that ensued on Thursday night, Round 11 provided us with the second highest scoring round of the year!

Tom Stewart put up his second 170+ score of the year, while Lachie Neale took his season average up to 135 with a massive 164.

Timmy English put any doubts of a potential 50/50 ruck role to bed, chalking up his best score of the year with a 160, and he now looms as a potential must have.

I was able to capitilise on some of the high scoring, but certainly not all of it; finishing the round with 2409 points, moving me down 330 spots to 1312. I’m still within arms length of the top 1000, and will look to make some moves during the byes to cement my spot there!

Sydney v Richmond

Two cracking Friday night games in a row for the Swans, but this time they managed to complete a furious comeback over a Richmond side which will be rueing its second half fade-out.

The usual suspects in Callum Mills (117 SC) and Luke Parker (116 SC) stood up for Sydney, although it should be a slight worry for coaches that Mills spend the vast majority of the second-half deep in defense in a puzzling (but effective) coaching move from Horse Longmire. Peter Ladhams (113 SC) played his best game of footy for the Swans, while Chad Warner’s (91 SC) potential 50-against on the siren shouldn’t overshadow how integral he was in the comeback.

Jake Lloyd (101 SC) was his usual self, Paddy McCartin (75 SC) put up his fourth-straight 75+ score, but Isaac Heeney (53 SC) owners would’ve been beyond disappointed with his performance, which was actually inflated (believe it or not) by 5 free kicks for.

Matty Roberts (8 SC) debuted and could not get near it, racking up just the two touches. Hopefully he gets another crack next week.

For the Tigers, Toby Nankervis (134 SC) was a POD option for Preuss traders, and looks an astute call as he dominated in the ruck. His relevance has passed for the season, but Hugo Ralphsmith (101 SC) was excellent and is worth a look in the future if he retains DPP. 

Jayden Short (85 SC) and Dustin Martin (79 SC) were both slightly down on typical output, as the Sydney midfield got on top, while Josh Gibcus (55 SC) was thrown forward late and did some good things.

Brisbane v GWS

We were promised free-flowing, high scoring footy up at the Gabba between two exciting teams and this game duly delivered!

Lachie Neale (167 SC) was monstrous, chalking up 39 possessions, six tackles and 2.0 in another complete display. He was joined for the ride by the much-maligned (in the SuperCoach community) Jarrod Berry (127 SC) who knocked up his first 100+ score of the season thanks to 33 possessions and 10 marks.

Cam Rayner (98 SC) and Keidean Coleman (86 SC) were both great for Brisbane, but two popular premium options in Daniel Rich (55 SC) and Dayne Zorko (37 SC) were both horrific. Rich was tagged by Matt De Boer, which makes his score semi-understandable but Zorko (in 5% of teams) was just plain bad.

For the Giants, Josh Kelly (131 SC) was again magnificent and is now averaging 130 in his last five games. In just 9% of teams, he shapes as a handy POD on the run home. Isaac Cumming (117 SC) has had a poor fortnight, but bounced back nicely.

James Peatling (96 SC) backed up his breakout 132 last week with another big score, although it is being heavily inflated by kicking multiple goals.

Stephen Coniglio (85 SC, 25 disposals) got plenty of it but went at just 60% DE, while second-gamer Jacob Wehr (60 SC) started terribly but built in to his game nicely and should have done enough to hold his spot at least over the byes. 

Injuries

Coleman and Lincoln McCarthy both copped knocks late and looked sore.

Callan Ward got his head smashed by a Hipwood knee in the first quarter and did not return.

Geelong v Adelaide

Brave effort from the young Crows, but they were never quite up to the task of taking down Geelong at GMHBA.

Tom Stewart (174 SC) seems to have one of these enormous games once a month, putting up an absurd 34 kick, 6 handball, 16 mark masterclass out of the back half.

Cam Guthrie (126 SC) was fantastic through the guts and was ably supported by Joel Selwood (111 SC). Mitch Duncan (77 SC) has been underwhelming all season for owners, and with his third sub-85 score in a row it’s probably time to put a mark against his name for the rest of the year.

Rookie Sam De Koning (75 SC) has found his feet at AFL level in a big way, and now has just one sub-75 score in his last five appearances to kickstart his cash generation. Second-gamer Cooper Stephens (46 SC) and first-gamer Shannon Neale (34 SC) were both solid. Stephens played just 53% gametime, which is one to keep an eye on.

Reilly O’Brien (175 SC) proved his SANFL explosion from last week was no fluke, putting up 28 disposals and 47 hitouts in a monstrous display in the ruck. He was able to give Rory Laird (118 SC), Ben Keays (114 SC), Jackson Hateley (108 SC) and Jordan Dawson (104 SC) first usage all day.

Matt Crouch (62 SC) had 26 touches but couldn’t hit a target, while Jake Soligo (50 SC) crashed back to earth after a big couple of weeks. Wayne Milera (33 SC) couldn’t get near it.

Injuries

Jordon Butts copped a knee to the head in the third quarter and was subbed out.

Melbourne v Fremantle

Boilover at the G! Superb effort from the Dockers, fighting back from a decent half-time deficit to upset the Dees for the first time in 18 weeks.

Luke Ryan (141 SC) and Sean Darcy (141 SC) shared BOG honours, with Ryan racking up 25 kicks and Darcy putting 32 hitouts on top of 16 possessions and a goal.

Rory Lobb (126 SC) kicked three big goals, Michael Frederick (105 SC) was excellent and Will Brodie (105 SC) did what Will Brodie does. Andrew Brayshaw (100 SC) was slightly below his best, but still serviceable. Caleb Serong (75 SC) couldn’t find enough of the footy.

For the Dees, Max Gawn (118 SC) lowered his colours to Darcy but spent more time in the ruck than previous weeks and saw his score increase as a result.

Clayton Oliver (113 SC) and Angus Brayshaw (100 SC) found stacks of the footy, but perhaps didn’t impact the game in the way they usually would. Jake Bowey (61 SC) has fallen off a cliff, whilst Christian Petracca (53 SC) played probably his worst game in years. 

Injuries

Matt Taberner was smashed in the back in the second quarter and didn’t return. Lobb tweaked a hammy in the third but powered through it.

Steven May ran his head in to Jake Lever’s shoulder very early on and was subbed out with concussion.

West Coast v Western Bulldogs

Another week, another abysmal performance by the once-formidable West Coast Eagles.

Tim English (160 SC) returned from an illness-enforced absence and looked unbelievably good, although given the opposition all Bulldogs scores need to be taken with a grain of salt. Josh Dunkley (143 SC), Bailey Dale (111 SC) and Adam Treloar (109 SC) all feasted on a stack of uncontested ball.

Marcus Bontempelli (96 SC) and Jack Macrae (102 SC) both barely got out of second gear; owners shouldn’t be concerned about either of those scores.

Robbie McComb (63 SC) was solid again, but unfortunately the same can’t be said for Buku Khamis (26 SC) who is surely due a run in the twos. Luke Cleary was named as sub and did not get on the ground.

Slim picking for the Eagles, but Tim Kelly (139 SC), Jack Darling (106 SC) and Alex Witherden (102 SC) were the best of a bad bunch. Greg Clark (72 SC) was solid and Callum Jamieson (41 SC) tried hard in the ruck despite being outmatched in almost every facet.

Injuries

Jeremy McGovern was subbed off with a back injury in more horrible news for West Coast fans.

Gold Coast v Hawthorn

Interesting contest up in Darwin and yet another impressive win for a Suns outfit hell-bent on making their first top 8 appearance.

Brandon Ellis (122 SC) played one of those games that reminds you why he was such a sought-after commodity at one point, kicking two goals and racking up a stack of outside ball. Jarrod Witts (119 SC) couldn’t hit his five-round average of 130, but was still more than serviceable.

Touk Miller (109 SC) wasn’t quite at his best but did enough, while rookie trade-in option Joel Sudar-Jeffrey (93 SC) was again excellent for the second week in a row, and – encouragingly – only kicked a single goal while still scoring well. Malcolm Rosas (64 SC) was solid.

James Sicily (147 SC) was again huge for Hawthorn and has gone 110+ in 8 straight games – what a season he’s having. Tom Mitchell (85 SC) got a stack of it but was relatively ineffective. Dylan Moore (62 SC) wasn’t Hawthorn’s worst, but couldn’t get in to the game for large chunks of it.

Injuries

Jack Scrimshaw was subbed out with concussion in the third quarter.

St Kilda v North Melbourne

Encouraging for North fans that they were able to remain competitive for large swathes of this contest, but as I keep writing about St. Kilda, good sides do enough to win these games and they were able to do so again today whilst barely getting out of second gear.

Jack Sinclair (140 SC) was immense, again, putting up his second straight 135+ score. In the absence of Jack Steele he seems to have free reign to roam wherever he wishes and is shaping as a must-have defender post-bye.

Jade Gresham (99 SC) loves to feast on crap teams and did so again, racking up 30 touches and kicking two goals. The most positive news for Saints fans (and Supercoaches looking for a downgrade) was the performance of Mitchito Owens (89 SC), who kicked two goals and successfully tagged Jye Simpkin. He is an enticing option next week.

Jed Anderson (144 SC) has had an interrupted season but is finding his feet in a big way. After an 87 last week, priced at exactly $400k, is he a genuine option? 

Luke McDonald (132 SC) and Todd Goldstein (123 SC) were again fantastic for the Roos, but it was a dirty day for Tristan Xerri (27 SC).

Jason Horne-Francis (58 SC) and Paul Curtis (48 SC) both did okay as rookie options, and many will be relying on them over the bye rounds.

Injuries

Rowan Marshall played through a right shoulder injury

Xerri, Nick Larkey and Curtis all copped big knocks at various points, but appeared to emerge unscathed.

Collingwood v Carlton 

Phew, how good was this game!! Too little too late for the Blues and a deserved win for Collingwood in front of a packed MCG crowd.

Jordan De Goey (112 SC) was excellent for the Pies, bobbing up at crucial times and kicking a huge goal to arrest Carlton’s momentum. John Noble (114 SC), Steele Sidebottom (103 SC) and Jack Crisp (97 SC) all got stacks of footy, with Crisp in particular looking right at home in a new-look Collingwood midfield.

Darcy Cameron (93 SC) continued his excellent form in Brodie Grundy’s absence and now has a five-round average of 107, as well as confirmed Ruck/Forward status. Nick Daicos (59 SC) has had an underwhelming few weeks and finds himself firmly on the trade-block as soon as he hits his bye.

Sam Walsh (123 SC) had 35 touches and is making a claim to be the most under-owned players in the comp, currently in just 7% of teams. The familiar names were all good for the Blues, with George Hewett (118 SC), Patrick Cripps (114 SC) and Sam Docherty (107 SC) all cracking the ton.

Corey Durdin (48 SC) crashed to earth after a big fortnight, while Jack Carroll (15 SC) was subbed on at quarter time but couldn’t find the footy and should be traded if you haven’t already.

Injuries

Jacob Weitering was subbed out with an AC-joint injury which could see him missing a couple of months.

Port Adelaide vs Essendon

My Bombers couldn’t quite get the win in what was forecasted to be a wet and slippery afternoon at the Adelaide Oval. Luckily, it wasn’t as bad as predicted, and Sam Hayes managed to get the call up and save a lottt of coaches who were depending on him.

The young boys, Rozee (106 SC) and Butters (104 SC) stood up in the midfield rotation when the power needed them most, and it looks as though they might have turned a corner in terms of their respective SuperCoach scoring.

Dan Houston (120 SC) continued his career best year. He’s only dropped below 90 twice and his last two games have been 139 and 120. Ollie Wines (112 SC)  also continued in his good form, taking his five-game average to 115.2; he’s $36.8k down from his starting price and looms as a great Round 13 upgrade option coming off his bye!

Unfortunately, Travis Boak (101 SC) didn’t get FWD status in the most recent batch of DPP’s, but he should get it in Round 18 and when he does, you should definitely consider him.

In a team of dull bleakness, Darcy Parish (142 SC) and Zach Merrett (130 SC) both provide a small glimmer of light and hope. Parish is probably too expensive now to consider, but Zachy boi, who is $105k down from his starting price, looks like an unbelievably good value pick next week off his bye.

Nic Martin (92 SC), proved just how much of a professional he is; bouncing back from his mediocre performance last week and delivering for all the coaches who held him. What a star!

Injuries

Karl Amon sustained a left ankle knock with just a few seconds to go that left him writhing on the ground

SPP supposedly tweaked his groin in the last but played out the match
