Final Word: Trades, tactics, tips, Round 15

It’s funny how quickly the landscape can change in Supercoach.

I guess the key is just to remain fluid and flexible in forward planning. 

In regards to the Rd-17 bye I thought earlier in the season it looked the better of the two byes to target players. Now I’m not so sure. 

I think the performances of the Dragons and the Eels on the weekend have really given Supercoaches something to think about.

Players like Lomax and Suli for the Dragons and Maika Sivo, Gutherson, Lane and Mitch Moses for the Eels were probably in considerations before below par performances from both teams. 

Now with rep round looming and a lot of players playing in Origin and national teams, the more responsible course of action seems to be just to wait and see how it all washes up in two and a bit weeks time. 

Players like Brian To’o, Scott Drinkwater, Jason Taumalolo and Joey Tapine are really coming forward as purchases even though it seems counterintuitive to trade these players in with looming rep commitments and byes.

Strategy 

My Mulitalo trade had a solid return, Sivo did not turn out the way I’d have liked first up, but hopefully there is better to come from the Eels. 

I’m glad I got Mam because I think he could possibly be a keeper or at worst earn a tonne of money that can be used on keepers for the run home. 

12 trades left means I need to be judicious in the way I use them. Every trade needs to be considered for both its short-term and long-term benefits. 

Covid, injuries and restings may yet have a significant part to play in the Supercoach season and trades and/or squad depth is likely to be very important.

My depth is great and I have traded in value propositions to the point where my squad value is in excess of $14 million. 

Only one team in the top 500 has a squad valued at more than mine. 

Unfortunately there are no prizes for squad value, but I hope it allows me to afford more quality players than those Supercoach teams ahead of me and eventually turns into points. 

At 1,282^nd place I am 419 off the top 100 and 879 points off 1^st place. 

Trades 

I’m considering this week sitting on my hands. There is some temptation to bring in Campbell Graham or Brian To’o, but I am hopeful I can resist the urge. 

If I do bring them in I will have to trade out a potential keeper in Haas or Manu and I don’t think I’m prepared to do that just yet.

PODs & Super PODS 

Here’s the players I’ve identified as PODs (Point of Difference players – less than 10% owned) and Super PODS (less than 2% owned) that should be on your radar. 

I’ve listed them in ranking order of who I believe is the best to take the risk on: 

PODs (My top-4 ranked) 

1.    Matt Burton – Finally settling in to life as a Bulldog, it appears the shackles are off for Matty Burton at the Dogs. Scores of 71, 57, 78, 75, 98 and 82 over the last six weeks is a clear indication that Burton is well and truly finding his feet at the Bulldogs. 

2.   Joe Ofahengue – Pumping out huge scores for a middle forward. A bit like David Klemmer, he hasn’t got the huge ceiling but neither do many other FRF’s at the moment and he is healthy and playing big minutes. Also plays Rd-17.

3.   Ronaldo Mulitalo – Pretty amazingly still in the POD category which is great for us owners! 

4.   Brian To’o – Coming under some serious consideration this week even though he has State of Origin looming. The Warriors match up looks juicy. 

Super PODs (Top-1) 

1.     Sione Katoa – Very, very risky! But no risk, no reward and Sharks don’t seem to discriminate when it comes to shifting to an edge. They love to shift the ball from side to side and really test defensive lines out play after play.

CAPTAIN

It’d take a brave Supercoach now that Papi is out to not put the captain on Nathan Cleary. 

However, as we saw last week with Nicho Hynes bravery can sometimes pay off in a big way. 

Nicho Hynes might just do what we all thought he’d do a week ago in the Saturday day game at Coffs Harbour (hope it’s not windy down there for goalkicking).
