Trade guide: Assessing the most traded players, Rd 15

The journey to “full premo” has hit a roadblock in SuperCoach, with injuries to popular players such as Tim English, Zak Butters and Braydon Preuss causing major headaches.

Do we hold or sell these players?

Sports journalist and SuperCoach expert Dylan Bolch will run his eye over the top trade targets each round and summarise which players are really worth trading in, and which are really worth trading out.

He will give a quick take each week on the ten most traded in players and the ten most traded out as per the official SuperCoach site.

Here is his analysis ahead of Round 15:

Traded In

1. Luke Jackson ($381,200 RUC/FWD) – This is a major speculative pick in my eyes. With Max Gawn going down with injury, Jackson will be required to shoulder much of the ruck load in his absence. Is the youngster up to the task? He was a game breaker in the Grand Final last year, but I still have concerns as to whether he can hold his own for a full game, for several weeks. Just two SuperCoach tons this year and six the year before, is now the time he breaks out?

• Marcus Bontempelli ($575,300 FWD/MID) – How is the ‘Bont’ in just 18% of teams? That must be one of the biggest mysteries of SuperCoach right now. He’s an absolute gun (third best average amongst forwards) and has dropped below 100 just twice this season, a score of 96 and a score of 88. Don’t stress too much about the shoulder niggle he is carrying, he is a lock for our SuperCoach sides.

• Judson Clarke ($117,300 MID/FWD) – Does the Dandenong Stingrays product hold his spot in the side? He couldn’t quite back up his electric debut performance but still managed 45 SuperCoach points against the Blues. Keep an eye on team selection here, if named he could be a nice cash grab, but his job security is shaky one would imagine.   

• Massimo D’Ambrosio ($102,400 DEF) – Bellissimo! Picked up in the mid-season rookie draft after strong showings for the Western Jets in the NAB League and for Richmond’s VFL side, D’Ambrosio was excellent in his debut at the top level. He gave away a few free kicks early in the game but settled, operating at 80% disposal efficiency. A nice downgrade option, especially given he is at the base price for rookies.

• Patrick Parnell ($123,900 DEF) – The speedy defender has looked composed in his first two games for the Adelaide Crows. Was very impressive last week scoring 70 points meaning he has a breakeven of -38 heading into Round 15. Like Clarke, keep an eye on selection. He could be a handy downgrade if you still own the likes of Paddy McCartin, Sam de Koning or Joshua Gibcus.

• Luke Parker ($559,300 MID/FWD) – How good is it that we can select Parker as a forward this year! After being a fringe top 8 midfielder in SuperCoach for several seasons, Parker is a clear-cut top 6 forward in 2022. The gun swan has a three-round average of 116 and has not dropped below 89 since Round 4. Great option if moving on a Butters/English/Preuss type.

• Jarrod Witts ($591,200 RUC) – It’s almost a case of last man standing here. Witts has a breakeven of 163 which isn’t ideal, but if you need to move on English or Preuss he is still the best option. Last week’s score of 68 appears to be an outlier and he should continue to average about 115 points from here on in. He has a nice run of fixtures coming up too.

• Sean Darcy ($558,400 RUC) – The major alternative to Witts in the ruck. Darcy has been a yo-yo in 2022, scoring as high as 178 in Round 8 and as low as 59 in Round 12. Also has a high breakeven (179), but is a cheaper alternative to Witts, arguably with a higher ceiling as well. Fingers crossed Lloyd Meek stays out of the side, because Darcy averages 65.5 points when they play together, but 110 when he rucks on his own.

• Isaac Heeney ($453,100 MID/FWD) – Another yo-yo player, Heeney’s best is outstanding, but his worst can really hurt you. Seems to be hitting form again, with a score of 124 last round coming after a run of scores in the 90s and a 53. The major appeal with Heeney is the price point, there’s not too many other players averaging 100+ under 500k. Could be the ‘best of the rest’ in a forward line where it is hard to predict which players will round out the top 6-8 forwards.

1. Tim English ($605,100 RUC/FWD) – I had to do a double take reading this, but yes, Tim English is the tenth most traded in player at the time of writing. Hit those reverse trade buttons, he’s been ruled out of the Bulldogs clash with Hawthorn and will be touch and go for next week as well.

1. Zak Butters ($471,000 MID/FWD) – Butters’ knee injury doesn’t appear as bad as first thought, with the Power to take it week-by-week. He missed just one match last year with a similar injury, so fingers crossed whatever happened last time happens again. Has been frustrating to own this season so now is the perfect time to jump off if you have trades banked, but if it is a 1-2 week layoff he can definitely be held.

• Braydon Preuss ($444,100 RUC) – Preuss must be one of the most talked about players in SuperCoach this year. We knew that there was an injury and suspension risk attached to Preuss and would you believe it – he was both injured and suspended in the same game. However, the club believes he will be right to go after serving his one-week ban. His breakeven is up to 125 after that injury-affected 17 on the weekend, so his cash generation will be stunted in the short term. If you can use DPP to get in a gun forward I think that is the best bet.

• Max Gawn ($608,700 RUC) – An ankle injury is set to sideline Big Maxxy for another 2-4 weeks. It’s hard to find a reason to hold him given how expensive he is, plus English is out and Brynn Teakle is cooked too. Trade to another premium and potentially look at bringing him back later on in the season with a luxury trade if you can. 

• Sam de Koning ($353,300 DEF/FWD) – ‘SDK’ has been one of the best rookies of 2022 and has slotted in seamlessly to a strong Geelong defence. After a score of 48 against the Eagles though, his breakeven has jumped to 87 and now is a good time to trade him out. Parnell or D’Ambrosio look to be the best downgrades and you can bank some big dollars by pulling that trade.

• Greg Clark ($255,200 MID) – Clark was surprisingly axed from the Eagles side and demoted to medical sub but came on to replace Jeremy McGovern and salvaged a score of 44. When he plays, he scores well enough, but clearly his job security is ordinary. With a breakeven of 52, it might be time to part ways unless he finds a way into the final 22 for the clash on Friday night against the Bombers.

• Patrick McCartin ($379,600 DEF/FWD) – Another standout rookie in 2022 for SuperCoach. McCartin’s breakeven is out to 70 and it appears he has just about maxed out in price. Would be really nice bench cover if your team allows it, but most sides will be eking out every dollar to try and reach “full premo”.

• Joel Jeffrey ($284,6500 FWD) – A surprise packet out of the Suns this season, Jeffrey unfortunately has suffered a knee injury. The club is yet to place a timeline on his return, which makes it difficult to know whether to trade or hold. Keep an eye on the Gold Coast Suns injury report for this one. If he is missing three weeks plus, cut ties.

• Nic Martin ($366,200 MID/FWD) – Came from the clouds to get a place on Essendon’s list in the preseason and has been a shining light for the Bombers and our SuperCoach teams. One score above 66 in his last five outings suggest he is tiring a little bit and given he has a breakeven of 92, now is a good time to trade him out.

• Malcolm Rosas ($256,600 FWD) – Missed last week through illness but from all reports is a chance to return this week. A season-high score of 83 the week before he got crook reset his breakeven to just 4, meaning there’s still some cash to be made here. Keep an eye on those team sheets.   

1. Sam Hayes ($308,200 RUC) – With Teakle going down, Hayes could return to the senior side as early as this week. Hayes was the dominant ruck for the Port Adelaide Magpies in the SANFL on the weekend, amassing 37 hit outs and 11 disposals against Norwood. If you still have him, he’s a definite hold assuming he gets back in. If not, trade.
