Captain’s Corner: Round 15, skippers to target and avoid

The byes are over, we finally have 22 (hopefully premo’s) playing in our sides, and I’m writing a captain’s article! What the heck is going on?!  

Captaincy selection is at an all-time importance level, and with an abundance of people to choose from, it’s ever so critical to ensure that you select the right one.

Last week we saw the resurgence of SuperCoach Hall of Famer, Jack Macrae (155); and if you had him as your skipper, it’s hard to imagine you not rapidly moving up the rankings.

Callum Mills (138) was also a popular captain choice, and he fully rewarded the owners who took a punt on him, as did Sam Docherty (128) who was a popular vice caption option.

However, Josh Kelly (65), Jarrod Witts (68), and Touk Miller (100) were all feasible options with an enticing looking fixture, although they certainly didn’t live up to expectations.

The same can be said for Patty Cripps (79) as a VC choice.

Jack Macrae

It’s impossible to not have Macrae as the #1 option this week after his massive 155 last round which included 37 touches and 9 tackles!! Coming up against the Hawks, he should have an absolute field day, with Andy Brayshaw (135), Callum Mills (214), and Patty Cripps (119) all scoring extremely well against them (and those are just the blokes I’ve got in my team!). You can just about lock Macrae in for 140+.

Last 3 vs Hawthorn: 136, 102, 127

Marcus Bontempelli

Speaking of Doggies playing the Hawks, there is no one better suited to this matchup than Marcus Bontempelli. Admittedly, Hawks do have players that can match up well with the likes of Macrae, Dunkley, and Libba, but no one in their side is capable of defending the Bont. He loves the Hawks, he loves playing at Marvel, he loves the big occasion of a Friday night match, and he will dom-i-nate.

Last 3 vs Hawthorn: 114, 161, 97

Callum Mills

Traditionally, Millsy doesn’t have a great record against the Saints, but I reckon you can chalk that up to him playing 3/4 of his career as a defender. He is playing at the SCG though, and that is a place he loves, putting up scores of 147, 130, 139, 167, and 117 just this year. The Saints do get their captain back for this game, but that will only make it more contested, and we all know Callum LOVESSSS a tackle.

Last 3 vs St Kilda: 100, 83, 80

Rory Laird

This could be massive. Laird comes up against probably one of the worst quality teams in recent years, in the form of his life. He has only dropped below 114 twice this year (93 & 105), and currently has a three-game average of 122.7. If you’re in need of a safe captain, he’s got to be your man.
