Trade guide: Assessing the most traded players, Rd 18

To trade or not to trade Clayton Oliver? It’s the question on everyone’s minds this weekend. 

Sports journalist and SuperCoach expert Dylan Bolch will run his eye over the top trade targets each round and summarise which players are really worth trading in, and which are really worth trading out. 

He will give a quick take each week on the ten most traded in players and the ten most traded out as per the official SuperCoach site. 

Here is his analysis ahead of Round 18:

TRADED IN

1.     Jase Burgoyne ($117,300 DEF/MID) – Burgoyne is on the extended bench this weekend so make sure you keep an eye on final team selection. With two scores of 65+ already under his belt, if named, he could provide good cover this weekend. 

2.     Josh Carmichael ($102,400 MID/FWD) – The mid-season draftee did some nice things on debut for the Pies after being rewarded for some strong VFL form. His 102k price point means even if he gets dropped down the track, you haven’t wasted any money. Not an urgent trade in though, he is set to go up in price next week, not this week. 

3.     Callum Mills ($575,300 MID) – Gun with a massive ceiling. If you don’t own and are looking to get rid of Oliver, Mills is a fantastic option. He is a contested ball beast and tackling machine.

4.     Andrew Brayshaw ($580,700 MID) – Hasn’t quite broken into the uber-premium tier just yet, but he’s certainly not far off. If you’ve already got the big guns, he is probably one of the next best options. Is one of only seven players to have a five-round average of 120+. 

5.     Noah Cumberland ($123,900 FWD/MID) – Came on as the substitute against the Suns and got amongst it, but I’m not sure long term that his job security is that great. Won’t rise in price this weekend either, I think Carmichael could be a better option if you are after a FWD/MID rookie swing.

6.     Jack Steele ($549,800 MID) – Steele has now played three games since returning from a shoulder injury and has three scores between 105-115. Given the price, he is far more accessible than some of the other midfield options this week. With St Kilda fighting for a finals spot, expect Steele to feature prominently in the closing rounds of 2022.

7.     Rory Laird ($668,200 MID) – How is he in just 15% of teams? That is seriously baffling to me. Bar Oliver and Lachie Neale (who are both in over 50 per cent of sides), Laird has been one of the best players this season. If you can afford him, don’t hesitate to jump on board.  

8.     Touk Miller ($620,900 MID) – Another potential midfield option this week. His past two matches have yielded scores of 153 and 135. He’s an absolute workhorse and a top 6 SuperCoach midfielder. 

9.     Jack Sinclair ($579,000 DEF/MID) – The second Saint to feature in the top 10 most traded in players this week and for good reason. Will seriously challenge to be the best SuperCoach defender by the end of the season.   

10.  Shai Bolton ($463,700 FWD/MID) – I feel like the Bolton trade in is a little bit reactive. Yes, he went ballistic last week (162), but aside from that game he has had just one score above 102 all season. I’m not buying the hype.

TRADED OUT

1.     Clayton Oliver ($722,800 MID) – The biggest dilemma of SuperCoach this weekend. Oliver has been outstanding in 2022, averaging a league-high 130 points per game. He’s been ruled out of the Dees’ clash against Port Adelaide this week with a finger injury but is a big chance to get up next week. Do you be aggressive and trade or do you trust a rookie to cover for one week and then welcome Oliver back in Round 19? 

What you do with Oliver largely depends on your team structure. How many trades do you have left? Who is your cover? If you’ve got five trades or more and are “full premo” already, be aggressive and pull the trigger and look to bring him back in once he’s back perhaps. However, if you have four trades or are still on your way to “full premo”, I think it is best to hold. 

2.     Jacob Wehr ($293,200 DEF) – Wehr has been great for SuperCoach after making his debut in Round 10 and playing every game since. He struggled against Port (so did most of the Giants) but has usually been reliable for a 60+ score. His breakeven is 46 and he would be solid cover this week, however if trading him allows you to upgrade elsewhere, pull the trigger. 

3.     Maurice Rioli ($203,100 MID/FWD) – He’s been omitted this round so unfortunately won’t provide any cover. Has a breakeven of 63, so he can be traded if it helps to facilitate other moves.

4.     Malcolm Rosas ($240,800 FWD) – Rosas will miss this week with a hamstring injury, but it is best to cash in now before he falls even further in price. 

5.     Greg Clark ($233,600 MID) – Clark is on the extended bench for the Eagles clash with Hawthorn this week. His breakeven is up to 90 after coming on as the sub last week, so his price growth has stunted entirely. Can definitely be traded. 

6.     Tom Green ($480,800 MID) – Green’s performance against the Power was his worst for the season from a SuperCoach perspective. He’s a luxury upgrade though, as he still has the ability to score 100 on his day.  

7.     Darcy Parish ($586,900 MID) – Is set to miss again with his troublesome calf. Can you afford to hold both Parish and Oliver? Probably not. I’d rather trade Parish, too.

8.     Lachie Whitfield ($462,900 MID/DEF) – It’s been a pretty disappointing SuperCoach year for Whitfield, who hasn’t been able to hit his straps at all. I’d be looking to pivot if possible and trades permit.

9.     Nic Martin ($375,800 FWD/MID) – Martin has maxed out in price so if you still have him, it’s because you’re either having to field him at F6, or you’ve got him as luxury bench cover. If he’s your F6, try and fix that as soon as you can. 

10.  Luke Jackson ($414,600 RUC/FWD) – Those who jumped on Jackson when Max Gawn went down were always going to have this issue come up when he the skipper returned. Jackson’s breakeven is 54 so he might get a minor price rise over the coming weeks, but can you afford to field him? At F6, maybe, but I wouldn’t want him in my ruck line because you’re giving up too many points. If you could somehow manage it, he would be an ideal F7 loop option.
