Squad Breakdown: Analysing the Round 19 teams
2020 NRL SuperCoach runner-up Tim Williams analyses every squad dropped on team list Tuesday.

Round 18, 2022, will go down as a dark day for the Cooma Stallions.
Despite mass restings, I was able to field a strong team, all with promising match ups ahead.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, with my short-term play to anti-POD Joey Manu (in favour of Brian To’o a fortnight back), proving a very costly decision.
Making it worse was the fact plenty of SuperCoaches had the captaincy or vice-captaincy on the highly owned Manu.
Rubbing further salt in the wounds was my skipper Ryan Papenhuyzen going down injured early in the first half in the loss to the Raiders.

Not to worry, that’s the game, you win some you lose some!
It’s also the same reason I’m very strong on believing you can win SuperCoach from a reasonable distance back.
The swings among top ranked teams can happy so easily, meaning 500 point swings are fairly achievable.
I brought in Cam Munster and David Fifita who both scored well, so I’m well set up for the run home, hopefully a few spots can be won back quickly to remain in the hunt for the top gong.

Analysis: Parramatta have a tough run home against the Broncos, Panthers, Sea Eagles, Rabbitohs, Bulldogs, Broncos and Storm.
For this reason, I’d be hesitant to invest in any players outside of Isaiah Papali’i who continues to churn out massive numbers.
Shaun Lane is a likely a hold, although if he’s your ticket to a gun I can understand selling. Lane to Cam Murray this week may facilitate two huge trades elsewhere.
Dylan Brown and Mitch Moses are borderline keepers with so many great options available.
Maika Sivo owners with trades in hand can turn him into the likes of Garrick, Manu, To’o etc. He’s also fine to hold and play based on match up, but we know he can go low, so how many games would you comfortably play him in during that run home?
Ryan Matterson is on my radar if he returns to the form he was showing prior to injury.

Analysis: Ezra Mam has done an outstanding job as a cash cow, while producing some decent scores for owners during a tough period.
He can be moved onto a genuine keeper in the halves having gone close to peaking at $413k.
Brisbane’s run is mixed with games against the Eels, Tigers, Roosters, Knights, Storm, Eels and Dragons.

For this reason, owners of Kotoni Staggs and Selwyn Cobbo can either hold to be played in only the soft matches, or moves them onto an elite CTW option.
Cobbo hasn’t been named this week following his head knock in the Origin decider.
Zac Hosking looks a popular downgrade/nuff option to free up cash. He may become an auto-emergency nightmare in future if coming onto the bench though and see minimal game time, so be aware of that.
Payne Haas returns, but with most owning two or three of Papali’i, Tapine and Taumalolo, is he worth burning a trade for? How times have changed…
He’s just as likely to make us rethink things after one booming performance.

Analysis: No interest at the Dragons for me due to a tough three week’s ahead, and their very unconvincing form.
Zac Lomax is a hold for anyone scarce on trades, those placed okay can move him onto a top line CTW with a higher ceiling.

Analysis: Manly have a fairly nice run home which makes them tempting.
They face the Dragons, Roosters, Eels, Titans, Sharks, Raiders and Bulldogs.
Reuben Garrick is becoming almost fixture proof, regardless of goal-kicking duties.
He’s averaging 72 points per game, and has a five round average of 95 points per game.
After relinquishing the goal-kicking duties to Daly Cherry-Evans due to a niggle, he did take the final conversion of the game, so owners will be hoping he gets them back sooner rather than later.
DCE has been thrown up as a replacement for Papenhuyzen, and with a season average of 72 and back-to-back tonnes it’s hard to argue.
He is in a stacked position though, so he’ll be tough to fit in. He’s owned by 0% of the top 100 ranked SuperCoach teams overall, all the way through to the top 20,000, super POD!
I do prefer him a lot with the goal-kicking fulltime, but he has shown he can score well without the duties.
Quite incredibly Josh Schuster is just $234k with a breakeven of 70. He could hit close to bottom dollar in coming weeks.
While he’s an auto-emergency nightmare at the moment, he’s also probably only one injury in the halves or back-row away from being an 80 minute player who averages 60 odd.
For that reason, maybe he’s a sneaky cash in option? Probably worth waiting till he actually starts, but worth some thought.

Analysis: Very little interest at the Knights, you can pretty well move on any players you may have.
Following his Origin heroics, Kalyn Ponga may be a super POD at effectively 0% ownership, priced at a very cheap $490k.
It’s obviously a huge risk, but we know he can go very big, and the Knights do have a very nice run home with games against the injury hit Roosters, Dogs, Tigers, Broncos, Raiders, Titans and Sharks.
Perhaps one for the thrill-seekers.

Analysis: Joey Manu is at $800k with a -9 breakeven, so it may be now or never for non-owners. At fullback or 5/8 he’s arguably the best player in SuperCoach, at centre his input is far more limited, so there is a case to go without when playing there (based on forking out the monster price tag).
With a season average of 75 and five round average of 83, I think James Tedesco is probably the best replacement for Papenhuyzen, taking into account Latrell Mitchell and South Sydney have a very tough draw.
As good as Joseph Suaalii is, it’s hard to argue he’s a hold over someone like Manu, To’o or Garrick, so it’s probably time to move him on.
Angus Crichton is a season-long hold, and the injury to Sitili Tupouniua should all but assure his 80 minute role for the rest of the season. How he has failed to score a try this season is pretty incredible.

Analysis: With a five round average of 85 points per game, Joe Tapine is a man on a mission.
He doesn’t have a century to his name this season which shows his remarkable consistency, so he’s not killing non-owners as such, but it is a hard watch.
Adam Elliott has a five round average of 81 points per game and remains an indefinite hold for the time being.

Analysis: No interest at the Warriors for me, although it is worth shouting out a vintage Tohu Harris performance with a try-assist, 41 tackles and 16 runs for 96 points against the Eels.
If I owned any of their players, including Euan Aitken, I’d be moving them on.

Analysis: Taylan May is the seventh most sold player this week. I understand there are CTW options going huge, and he only has the one tonne this season, but he’s a gun in the best team in the competition, on arguably the best attacking edge in the game.
He’s averaging 66 points per game, and gets a fired up full-strength Penrith side around him this week.
He was averaging 70+ prior to the Origin period which Penrith managed their side through.
Now rested up, they’ll come home like a steam train and May will have three digit scores to come.

Viliame Kikau tonned again and remains a great buy with a five round average of 78 and huge upside.
He’s owned by approximately a third of top ranked SuperCoaches.
As good as Api Koroisau is, I’d look to turn him into Harry Grant as soon as possible.
I’m also holding Izack Tago and playing on match up on the run home. He’s returned the faith with back-to-back 80s.

Analysis: I’d be looking to sit my Cronulla players, probably outside of Nicho Hynes, with a brutal match up at Penrith this week.
That includes Siosifa Talakai, Ronaldo Mulitalo and even the in-form Jesse Ramien. Of course this is only for sides with enough depth to do so, it’s not always that simple.
After this week, Cronulla have a brilliant run home against the Rabbitohs, Dragons, Tigers, Sea Eagles, Bulldogs and Knights.
We can look to lock in a few of their contingent from next week. Ramien does have a -24 breakeven, so anyone wanting him as a POD for the run home may have to go this week.
Sione Katoa will miss the season in a big blow for the Sharks and his SuperCoach owners. He’s owned by 9% of the top 100 and 7% top 1,000.
His wing replacement Connor Tracey will be an interesting watch in coming weeks.

Analysis: South Sydney have a horrific run home against the Storm, Sharks, Warriors, Eels, Panthers, Cowboys and Roosters.
For this reason, I’m not overly keen on a lot of their players, particularly attackers.
Latrell Mitchell looks the logical Papenhuyzen replacement. While I don’t doubt that he’s fixture proof in a good side, I’m not entirely convinced the Rabbitohs have turned a corner following a few soft wins, so how much opportunity will he get against harder opposition?
That being said, I’ll still likely recruit at the fear of not owning him, it’d be a hard watch.
However, due to the run I’ll avoid the in-form Alex Johnston, and I’m also not against selling Cody Walker who also is playing himself into some form.
Cam Murray is certainly on my radar, I’d like give him a week though due to a tough Melbourne clash to see how he returns from his nasty Origin concussion, but I may need to go early.

Analysis: Nick Meaney averages 69 at fullback this season and will take up the goal-kicking duties in the absence of Papenhuyzen. He’s a super POD available at CTW and worth thought.
Cameron Munster and Harry Grant are both must-haves and should be high priority trade targets.
While I appreciate there’s a lot of great trade targets this week (including moving on Papy at fullback), I was very surprised to see Grant just the 10th most traded in at the time of writing.

Analysis: No interest at the Bulldogs for me. Jacob Kiraz and Max King can likely be upgraded as soon as possible.
In my situation, King is my only decent back-up to Papali’i and Taumalolo, so while he’s scoring well I’ll hold with his handy dual positioning, but ideally I do think he’s a trade.
With a five round average of 73, Matt Burton is in serious form and looms as a POD for the run home at the resurgent Bulldogs, but not for me.

Analysis: David Fifita returned to the starting side with a bang, scoring a seemingly effortless 75 points in 80 minutes, with a very healthy 49 in base.
He has the biggest ceiling in SuperCoach of any forward, so he could go ballistic at anytime.
With a swagger of great purchases this week, he may have to wait, but have him in your plans in coming rounds.
No interest elsewhere at the Titans.

Analysis: The Cowboys do interest me with a very friendly run home against the Tigers, Dragons, Bulldogs, Roosters, Warriors, Rabbitohs and Panthers (potential restings).
Scott Drinkwater is a serious option at an affordable $601k with an average of 71 points.
Reece Robson is a hold for now, however it should be noted that prior to last week’s disappointing 42, he’d scored in five of his last six games.
He is basing 46 per game which is good, and he’ll benefit tremendously as the Cowboys welcome back a stack of stars across the next few rounds.
With a three round average of 83 points, Valentine Holmes becomes a great POD at just 1% ownership of the top 100-10,000 overall ranked SuperCoach teams.

Analysis: No major interest at the Tigers for me, Joe Ofahengaue continues to score well and remains a hold for now, but his minutes did drop substantially to 56 against the Panthers.
If this continues with the Jackson Hastings lock experiment, he may be a trade, but hardly an issue just yet.
Adam Doueihi looked outstanding, but I’m not sure the Tigers will produce enough points to warrant trading him in as a POD.
