Hail Mary: Super PODs to rescue your grand final

For anyone locked in a head-to-head grand final and needing a Hail Mary throw at the stumps play to claim league glory, I thought I’d whip together a few options to consider.

It also goes for anyone with a trade or two left up the sleeve in overall looking to make some final jumps up the leaderboard.

For those alive in head-to-heads, you might have started poorly in the opening game of the week with some big scores.

For example, if your opponent owns Clint Gutherson you’re already well and truly on the back foot!

You might be comparing your sides thinking you’re definitely the underdog, meaning you need something special to win your fixture.

I’ve come up with a few options to consider, primarily those in POD range with high ceilings and decent match-ups.

AJ BRIMSON

I’ve liked Brimson for a few weeks now, boasting a three round average of 87 since making the shift back to the halves.

He’s such an integral part of the Titans attack that he’s involved in just about everything they do with ball in hand.

He gets a dream match up with the Knights on the Gold Coast and I think he’s in for a big outing.

He also has the added bonus of another decent fixture against the Warriors next week to end the season.

He’s owned by 0% of the top 100 ranked teams overall and 2% of the top 1,000 heading into Round 24.

If I had one pick, it’d likely be him, but the options below are also well worth consideration.

BEN HUNT

Speaking of dream match ups, Ben Hunt against the Tigers who are missing around half of their top 25? Yes please…

The Tigers concede the second most SuperCoach points to halfbacks in the competition.

They conceded 72 NRL points last week, and their team runs out weaker on paper than that fixture.

Hunt is owned by 0% of the top ranked teams overall and 1% of the top 1,000.

While he doesn’t have a tonne to his name yet this season, this very well may be the week.

He also takes on a battling Broncos outfit next week which now looks a better match up than first anticipated.

TAYLAN MAY

While he’s not exactly in POD range at 63% of the top 100, and 55% of the top 1,000, I do think Taylan May is primed to go large against the Warriors.

If your head-to-head opposition doesn’t own him he looks a nifty buy.

The entire left edge of Penrith is complete with Jarome Luai the key being back in the side.

This should see the left get stacks of ball, and the Warriors edges are very fragile. It’s not helped by the loss of their starting back-rowers in Euan Aitken and Jack Murchie.

Penrith are lifting the J.J. Giltinan Shield as minor premiers in front of their home fans on Friday night, and they’ll want to do it after putting on a show.

Of more benefit is that he’ll only cost you $418k to invest. I think he goes big…

If you already own May, consider Dylan Edwards or a goal-kicking Stephen Crichton who are also likely to get amongst the point scoring in this clash.

JESSE RAMIEN

I’ve spoken a fair bit about Ramien over the past month, but I think he’s a great option against the Bulldogs at Shark Park.

Following this he ends the season against Newcastle which also bodes well for those focusing on overall ranks.

Matt Moylan has returned, but Nicho Hynes is demanding a lot of ball on the right edge, with Ramien his man on the outside.

He’s owned by 7% of the top 100 and 10% of the top 1,000.

I think he’s a strong option, but I do think plenty are giving the Bulldogs less credit than they deserve, so it wouldn’t shock me to see them outperform what most are expecting.

I would lean to the players mentioned above, but he is worth serious consideration.
