Trade guide: Analysing the most traded players, Round 3

Round Two is officially in the books, which means that now is our final chance to correct any mistakes from our starting squads before prices begin to change.

Sports journalist and SuperCoach expert Dylan Bolch will run his eye over the top trade targets each round and summarise which players are really worth trading in, and which are really worth trading out. 

He will give a quick take each week on the ten most traded in players and the ten most traded out as per the official SuperCoach site. 

Bombers recruit Will Setterfield, struggling rookie Campbell Chesser, North Melbourne veteran Jack Ziebel, l and the ruck dilemma are just some of the talking points in this week’s guide.

TRADED IN

1.     Will Setterfield ($348,200 MID) – He’s the most traded in player this week and is one of the best mid-priced options if you are looking to pivot from a player who hasn’t reached your expectations. Whilst I think he’s a good steppingstone, I believe we do need to temper expectations a little bit. Despite having a great, CBA-heavy role, I don’t know how many points there are for the former Blue week-on-week. Many SuperCoachers expect Darcy Parish and Zach Merrett to go 115+ and how many clubs have three gun midfielders all average well in SuperCoach? I think it’s worth noting the Bombers are 2-0 and I expect their winning run to end sooner rather than later as well. 

2.     Luke Davies-Uniacke ($557,400 MID) – Who’s scored the most SuperCoach points so far this season? This guy has. A great alternative to the big dogs if you are looking to replace Jack Steele. I’m not sure I would be restructuring your team to fit him in though, as I still am unsure if he will be a top 8 midfielder come the end of the year. Be wary of a potential tag from Finn Maginness this weekend, too. 

3.     Nick Daicos ($502,500 DEF) – Second-year blues? Someone forgot to explain what they are to this guy. Daicos has started the 2023 season on fire and is the best defender around that 500k mark to own, by a long way. His scores of 149 and 129 have been absolutely elite. The tag is still a slight concern but jump on now before he kills your rank even more. Given Richmond’s reluctance to tag, he could even be a sneaky VC option this week.

4.     Kade Chandler ($123,900 FWD) – Seems to be the rookie that everyone missed in pre-season. An average of 82 means he should make some good cash, IF he can keep his place in the side. Kicks goals, applies pressure and gets enough of the ball to make me think he should hold his spot so long as he continues to play his role.

5.     Darcy Cameron ($465,900 RUC/FWD) – Cameron owners have been rewarded dearly with a total of 240 SuperCoach points over the first fortnight of the season. Whilst he is splitting ruck time with Mason Cox, he’s shown that he can score well even if his CBAs are at approximately 65%. If you’re stuck with an underperforming ruck such as Sean Darcy, DCam is a superb trade-in this week. 

6.     Jack Ziebell ($356,400 FWD) – SQUAWK! The seagull is back! It looks as though we’ve got 2021 SuperCoach JZ on our hands again. Intercept marks, cheap kicks, and the very real possibility of becoming a top 8 defender/forward by years end. Keep an eye on the potential return of Aaron Hall though, who might reduce Ziebell’s scoring somewhat. I personally think Ziebell is the best mid-priced trade in this week.

7.     Tim English ($581,00 RUC) – English is flying after a pair of scores in the 130s to open his account in 2023. Could finish the year as the R1. My only question mark here is his body and the potential SuperCoach ramifications if he misses a week or two. Many sides have Nicholas Madden or Esava Ratugolea at F3 which would put SuperCoachers in a tricky position.

8.     Harry Sheezel ($198,300 FWD) – Have we seen a better two games to start an AFL career than Sheezel’s? The former Sandringham Dragon has scored a pair of 114s as a result of roaming through the backline, where he has displayed his elite kicking and decision-making. You just absolutely have to own him, whatever you need to do to get him in, do it. 

9.     Conor McKenna ($167,500 DEF) – I think he’s probably a must-have defender. With scores of 93 and 78, he is a reliable on-field option every week in defence. Being a mature body means I don’t think he will require a rest like other rookies might either. 

10.  Brennan Cox ($445,400 DEF) – The Fremantle defender has scored the third most points across the competition throughout the first two weeks of the season. My concern here is that there isn’t enough of a scoring history to fill me with confidence, plus he’s awkwardly priced. I’m not brave enough to go here personally.

TRADED OUT

1.     Nat Fyfe ($313,600 MID/FWD) – Trade now. Fyfe was a late out from the Dockers’ round two clash with a foot issue and looks likely to miss the next two games at least. After a score of just 26 in round one, don’t hesitate to move him on.

2.     Campbell Chesser ($123,900 DEF/MID) – Chesser has struggled at the top level so far, with two scores in the 20s. I’ll cut him some slack because he’s hardly played any footy at any level in the past couple of seasons, but he’s been a bust pick. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s dropped this week, which may mean you can use him as a loophole. Given most teams would have Nicholas Madden already though, I think a sideways trade to pick up another rookie who has better job security and scoring potential is the move.

3.     Max Gawn ($622,100 RUC) – Trade. Gawn went down with a knee injury in the clash against the Swans and is set to miss the next 4-6 weeks. 

4.     Sam Flanders ($256,300 MID/FWD) – Another mid-pricer who hasn’t worked out, averaging just 55 points across the first two weeks of the season. Pivot now to another option (there’s plenty) before their price jumps.

5.     Sean Darcy ($562,200 RUC) – Thank goodness I’m writing this on Wednesday, because I think I would’ve been far less diplomatic had I written it Saturday night. Darcy has just not been anywhere near what we expect of our R1, with scores of just 96 and 41 SuperCoach points. He seems to be the victim of Luke Jackson’s lack of role at the moment, which has seen him spend a fair bit of time forward. I’m holding the faith in him for one more week, his last two matches against the Eagles have yielded scores of 155 and 150. Another flop and he’s gone for English or Cameron. Over to you JL and Shrek. 

6.     Jack Steele ($604,400 MID) – Trade. A collarbone injury will see the St Kilda captain sit out the next 4-6 weeks. If you can get up to a top-line premium, I think that’s the way to go.

7.     Tanner Bruhn ($311,400 MID/FWD) – In a similar vein to Flanders, it’s time to swallow your pride and move Bruhn on. He’s attending just 37% of centre bounces and is spending far too much time either on the bench or on the wing.

8.     Sam Docherty ($603,600 DEF) – I think people are being too trigger-happy trading out ‘Doch’. Yes, he was underwhelming this week, but I don’t think there’s too many other better defenders out there. A definite hold for me. 

9.     Finn Callaghan ($244,000 MID) – After a score of 101 in round one, the Giants mid was brought back down to earth as he scraped his way to 45 SuperCoach points. A shoulder issue meant he spent a fair chunk of time off the ground, but even still, there seems to be better options out there with more certainty around their role week-in, week-out. It’s probably worth moving him on to a player with a lower breakeven, especially given his 101 will only be in the price cycle for a week. 

10.  Jason Horne-Francis ($348,800 MID/FWD) – This is why you always wait a week for mid-pricers like this. After a career best SuperCoach outing worth 136 points, Port Adelaide’s new recruit flopped hard for a score of 45, the fourth lowest of his career. His CBA numbers are similar across both games which is a positive, but Travis Boak could be promoted from substitute this week which might reduce JHF’s time in the middle. I’d probably look to sideways to a Ziebell/Setterfield type.
