Team lists: Supercoach round 10 squad analysis
2020 NRL Supercoach runner-up Tim Williams analyses the squads dropped for round 10 of the 2023 season.

Magic Round is on our doorstep, and I for one am extremely excited!
Round 9 proved an extremely odd one for Supercoach, with some pretty sizeable scores popping up, but it wasn’t exactly all the noted guns doing the damage.
Aside from Prince Nicho of course…
The Cooma Stallions notched 1,119 to move up into 7,300th overall, so we’re heading in the right direction.
Like most teams, my gun CTW absolutely flopped, with Holmes, To’o, Garrick and Turuva all going sub 47. Even Joey Manu dished out 63 which is solid at best.
The Penrith v Tigers dream match-up proved to not be as fruitful as anticipated, with the torrential rain and spirited Tigers not helping the cause.
Embed from Getty ImagesI was sideline to see J’maine Hopgood punish those who sold, and new recruit Dylan Brown go large, so that set up the weekend that largely went downhill after that based on what it could have been.
With no Knights players in my squad on the bye – Phoenix Crossland aside who wasn’t a play option anyway – I feel really good about my make-up this week and the match-ups incoming, so hopefully there’s more green on the horizon.
The first major bye round is just four weeks away, so overall coaches should have sights firmly placed on that now.
Those three major bye rounds, being Round 13, 16 and 19, only your top 13 scoring players register to your score.
So don’t go crazy trying to get more than 13 as it won’t achieve too much, but I think aiming to have 13 players should be the goal of all overall focused players.
Head-to-head players need not worry about ripping their squads apart too much for the bye period, unless you’ve had a shocking start and need to register a few easy wins while other sides are depleted.

Analysis: After an outstanding start to his NRL and Supercoach career, Jacob Preston is starting to flat line a bit with scores of 46, 56, 59 and 34 in his past four games.
However, he’s had a few excuses with 14 minutes off due to a HIA against the Dragons, and a sin-bin against the Rabbitohs for his 34.
The Bulldogs don’t play the first major bye round in round 13, so he’s a potential sell.
I’m more than happy to hold for a few more weeks though, I think he’s somewhat of a luxury sell if your side has no other issues.
Karl Oloapu made his highly anticipated debut off the bench, and he didn’t disappoint with 43 points in 47 minutes.

You’d think he’ll be starting before long as they ease him into the top grade.
He’s bottom dollar and looks a solid downgrade option, hopefully he’ll peak in price around about Round 16 when the Dogs play the second bye.
I would ideally be buying next week though ahead of his first major price rise.
Raymond Faitala-Mariner came onto my radar late last week and I was genuinely considering buying at 2RF if Tyrone Peachey was benched.
He scored 68 in 60 minutes, seeing a $30k price rise to sit with a breakeven of 6.
While I think we’ve certainly seen a preference for him to play less minutes than that this season, the injury toll should see him play decent minutes.
He’s a sneaky cheapie to free up cash, however the surprise naming of Max King is a big concern.
Jacob Kiraz returns early from injury and will be very cheap in a few weeks, likely as a Round 14 pick up. Franklin Pele returns from injury also, earn us some cash big fella!

Analysis: Attention is beginning to turn to the Raiders after three wins on the trot, and the fact they have Round 13 coverage.
There’s not a lot more to say about Joe Tapine who’s been both extremely disappointing yet reliable for owners in a volatile FRF position.
He’s scored between 57 and 67 in every game this season.
Averaging around about 50 minutes with little to no attacking stats, the only way is up and he remains a solid trade in for bye coverage, but he’s certainly not screaming ‘buy me’ at the moment.
His middle forward partner in Big Red, Corey Horsburgh, on the other hand is on top of a building with a ‘buy me’ banner and megaphone.
Priced at a very reasonable $544k, averaging 72 points in the past three games, and more importantly 71 minutes in that time, he’s come onto the radar big time this week.
Big Red has always looked a Supercoach relevant player, he’s just needed the minutes, which he’s now getting.
Last weekend he had 30 tackles, 20 runs, five offloads (all effective), a try-assist and a linebreak assist for 98 points, leaving him with a breakeven of 5.
Put simply enough, if he maintains the minutes he’s a buy, if they regress to sub 50 as they have been all season it’d be a trap.
Three weeks in a row with big minutes and no major injuries impacting those minutes are a great sign.

Bit dramatic, but what a great storyline for the NRL and Supercoach.
Unbeaten in three games back in the top grade, an initial cash rise of $56k off the back of 69 points against the Dolphins, goal-kicking, a decent draw, and Round 13 coverage against an Origin hit South Sydney side.
With a breakeven of -8 he remains a good buy this week, I would be very reluctant playing him in my 17 though.
Xavier Savage returns on the wing in a good sign for Croker.
Matt Timoko is averaging 60 points this season with just two tries and one try-assist in eight games.
He’s had 15 tacklebusts the past two weeks and is a genuine POD option at 1% overall ownership.
Canberra’s at times limited attacking potential concerns me as I think he lacks the high ceiling of other CTW options, but he’s worth a look.

Analysis: Manly are another club with Round 13 coverage.
Tom Trbojevic returns, I sold last week once he was ruled out, initially I had planned to hold.
I’m a little torn this week for those who do own as he’s lost almost all value and has largely still scored well this season.
Upcoming games against the Broncos, Sharks and Raiders are fairly tough.
Why I’d be slightly tempted to hold is the fact that maybe, just maybe, he misses Origin due to niggles and becomes available for the first major bye round.
The clear option is probably to sell, but I don’t think it’s that cut and dry.
Embed from Getty ImagesThose who jumped on Toa Sipley as a FRF cheapie were desperately unlucky with the big man sin-binned and suspended following his 12 points against the Titans.
He will return for Round 13 and will be fresh and firing, so probably worth holding if you can, but an obvious move on if required.
Reuben Garrick at centre ain’t a go. Thankfully with Tolutau Koula back this week he returns to the wing and becomes a certain hold and even a buy option at the price.
I was really concerned with that centre move for him but following his 8 point concussion game against Penrith, he’s now just $546k.
He’s a proven gun, I’ll be holding through until Round 13 and likely the season.

Analysis: To hold or sell Walsh? Tis the question…
He’s now down to $725k having dropped $78k from his peak price. He has a breakeven of 156.
Manly have injury concerns and aren’t overly fearful this week, but then they face the Storm and Panthers.
Sheesh he’s a tempting sell, however I can’t help but look past the likely Round 13 coverage.
He scored 23 against the Rabbitohs, but he was a fingernail from putting the ball down for a try which would’ve sent him to a 50+ score.
He may play Origin, but I still think Kalyn Ponga bounces back to play fullback for the Maroons despite last weekend’s horror show.
I’m likely to hold but I understand the sell as I think if he flops again this week, we may have lost the majority of value in selling. Big decision!

Analysis: Addin Fonua-Blake replaced Tohu Harris at lock, and seemingly got his entire minutes too, playing 75 against the Roosters!
Enormous from AFB who delivered for new owners with 85 points from 32 tackles and 22 runs.
Surely those minutes don’t continue though, so I wouldn’t be keen to invest now at $679k.
The Warriors do play Round 13 though so if you think he maintains the scoring/minutes then go ahead, it may be a masterstroke.
Not a heap going on elsewhere at the Warriors, with key players returning over the next few weeks it places a few question marks on the side, but they’re sure to come into the conversation after their Round 12 bye in prep for Round 13.
Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad returns at fullback and Tohu Harris at lock, which will almost certainly impact AFB’s minutes.

Analysis: If Reece Walsh was the biggest question of the week, Nathan Cleary is a very close second.
Firstly, I’m willing to put a line through the Tigers game for the entire Panthers side in the torrential rain in Bathurst, but it’d be wrong to completely ignore it.
Cleary still has huge value at $885k with a breakeven of 161, so he may be about to plummet cash.
Ordinarily you wouldn’t even think about selling, but he’s not kicking goals which shows he has a niggle that’s impacting him, and Origin is looming where he’ll miss at the very least three major bye rounds.
With most sides also carrying a firing Nicho Hynes, we’re looking at selling one of the pair at halfback over that period.
The Warriors match-up this week is decent, then they face the Roosters and Broncos.
Note they play the Sunday after Origin one against the Dragons, so it’s a decent turnaround for him to back up and it’s a dream matchup.
I’d say I’ll be holding, but I understand anyone tempted to move on.

I’ll hold this week then look to offload next week if they flop. I own To’o and Turuva.
Tyrone Peachey managed a promising 54 in the wet with a try off a kick, and 20 runs!
12 of the runs were under 8m for 1 point, but the conditions hurt that, while the typically high offloading Peach didn’t free the arm at all.
At $298k, breakeven -11 and likely dual CTW-2RF positioning coming in round 12, he looks a great buy.
Like all cheapies, job security is always going to be the issue, but if he locks down that spot I think he’s a serious option and someone I’d be relatively confident playing in my 17 each week.

Analysis: The only thing this flying Sharks side are missing at the moment is round 13 coverage.
Even then, they play the next two major bye rounds in round 16 and 19!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say again, I think Mulitalo, Talakai, Ramien and Katoa are all decent options, but working out which one is a mystery.
Cronulla’s attack is so well balanced across the board it makes it hard to know which area of the field, and hence which player, is best to target.

Mulitalo is probably the pick of them as the left edge attack is humming.
He scored 9 in round 1, then hasn’t scored below 60 since! That’s with two bombed tries.
Will Kennedy is a genuine POD and is involved in most good things the Sharks do in attack.
He’s averaging 74.5 points this season with a low score of just 45 against the Roosters.
With upcoming games against the Dolphins, Sea Eagles and Knights he looks a decent POD option.
I’ll likely consider from Round 14 after the bye.

Analysis: The Dolphins play Round 13.
Connelly Lemuele is a genuine option at $522k, with dual CTW-2RF positioning, coming off a 120 against the Raiders.
He continued to play the full game despite Kenny Bromwich and Felise Kaufusi being back in the side.
He’s not a big running back-rower, running just 11, 12, 6, 8 and 8 times in the past five weeks, all in 80 minute games except for one 60 minute stint.
In that regard he’s probably somewhat like Briton Nikora or to a lesser degree Jeremiah Nanai in that he’s pretty reliant on attacking stats, which he’s good enough to get.
Not for me with that output, but worth a look at an affordable rate.
Jeremy Marshall-King continues to impress with a three and five round average of 72.
He scored 33 against the Raiders in Round 2, outside of that he has low scores of 53 and 68, good going!
In a fairly volatile position this season, he’s a decent pick up at hooker heading into Round 13.
Tesi Niu returns on the wing, with last week’s popular cheapie Robert Jennings dropping out, this was always going to happen.

Analysis: Nick Meaney, Cam Munster and Harry Grant all went large on ANZAC Day.
Meaney is averaging a mammoth 80 points per game! Congratulations to anyone that jumped on from Round 1.
At $757k with a Round 13 bye looming and the fact he’ll lose Origin stars, I wouldn’t be buying.
Nelson Asofa-Solomona is an intriguing prospect, averaging 68 across his three games this season.
He scored 80 in 58 minutes against the Warriors, with 21 tackles, 16 runs (14 over 8m), five tacklebreaks, five offloads and a linebreak.
With Melbourne relatively light on forwards this year, he may continue to play big minutes and is a decent option at FRF at $580k.
We spoke at the start of the year about Reimis Smith’s lack of attacking stats the year prior, expecting a jump in 2023, check this out.
Eight games, no tries, one try-assist, no linebreaks, no linebreak assists.
A defensive centre if I’ve ever seen one.
Eli Katoa returns despite the doubts over his 11 day stand down from a concussion.

Analysis: The Rabbitohs are sizzling along and provide Round 13 coverage, although they will be missing a number of stars due to Origin commitments.
Melbourne this week off the bye will be tough, but they face the Tigers next week, followed by the Eels who haven’t been overly convincing defensively this season.
Campbell Graham had another big tonne against the Broncos, he’s averaging 82 this season, but at $802k with Origin surely looming it’s too much to pay up?
As much as I’d love to own Latrell, I also can’t pay up almost a million dollars with Origin not far away.
The Rabbitohs have a pretty quick turnaround on the Saturday after Origin 1 so restings are a decent chance.
Alex Johnston only managed 29 against the Broncos, his lowest score of the season, but at $573k there’s a really strong argument to pounce on him at 6% ownership.
He averaged 68 last season and 73 the year prior. He’s averaging 55 this season despite scoring just three tries in seven games, which is very low for him!
I’m tempted this week, but realistically with a breakeven of 52 and a tough Storm match-up I’m thinking I’ll pounce next week.
Davvy Moale has dropped out of the squad.

Analysis: Up the Tigs!!!
What a miraculous upset against the dual reigning premiers.
They now get a great chance for two on the trot with a very winnable game against the Dragons.
At bottom dollar, Jahreem Bula is the most traded in player this week following his 60 against Penrith, leaving him with a breakeven of -38.
It’s a shame he’s not dual FLB-CTW, as it’s a bit difficult to get him in in such a key position like fullback.
I’m happy with my cash generation across my squad and prefer to prioritise higher scoring players at fullback, so I’ll avoid and chase the points.
But he’ll likely make great coin and job security looks decent based on how impressive he’s been, so you can’t knock the trade. I’d be more tempted if the Tigers played Round 13.
Junior Tupou was the boom buy two weeks ago, he’s scored 28 and 31 in that time, making just $70k to sit with a breakeven of 92.
Despite a likely price drop incoming, I’d hold for this week due to the friendly match-up in hope of another big score and new round of price rises and then sell next week if he struggles.

Analysis: After being void of FRF options a few weeks ago, a few decent options are emerging.
Jack de Belin is another on that list, playing 80, 68 and 80 minutes the past three weeks, enormous!
He’s only averaged 62 points in that time which is only okay, but it has been almost entirely in base which is promising.
He’s only offloaded twice this season, and busted a handful off tackles, so I’m not overly keen, but at $548k with big minutes he’s a solid pick up with Round 13 coverage.
Tyrell Sloan, wowee… Last week’s most traded in player scored just 18 points against the Bulldogs, his third sub 20 score of the season.
He made just $47k and now has a breakeven of 45 and people are selling off already. He’s the sixth most traded out player!
It’s a cross the fingers game this week as he could go huge and tonne up against the Tigers, or he could go sub 20 again.
Regardless, I think you invested for both the cash grab and Round 13 coverage, so barring another disaster I’d be trying to stick strong through till he plays that round. At the very least give him this week.
Zac Lomax has been dropped to NSW Cup, meaning cheapie prospect Max Feagai retains his place in the team for now.

Analysis: James Tedesco somehow managed 57 in torrential rain against the Warriors with one linebreak as his only attacking stat.
He remains dirt cheap at $571k and a big score is incoming, with a terrific match-up against the leaky Cowboys this week.
With Origin looming he’ll miss key weeks, the Roosters play the Sunday after Origin 1 which will aid his chances of avoiding a rest.
I do think Joey Manu at 5/8 really stunts Teddy’s scoring though, he gets very little decent ball in those sweeping plays that so often result in tries and try-assists.
Potential wing cheapie Corey Allan scored 25 and will remain a wait and watch to see if he starts scoring a few.
To be fair, like that Penrith game I’m pretty well putting a line through that Roosters v Warriors clash due to the conditions.

Analysis: Not a lot to get excited about at the Cowboys on current form.
Reuben Cotter scored just 29 points, I missed why but he only played 34 minutes?
Val Holmes scored 26 points and will likely be a sell prior to Origin where he’ll miss games.
I’d be tempted to flip this week, but with games the following rounds against the Dragons and Tigers I’ll definitely be sticking strong through till Round 13.
Outside of last week, he was going rock solid.
Heilum Luki returns from injury on the edge in Nanai’s place and is one to monitor in coming weeks, gun.

Analysis: David Fifita has been truly elite this season and with his new ‘roll up the sleeves’ attitude and only a handful of attacking stats I think it’s only going to get better.
The downside is you’d have to think he’s played his way into an Origin jersey.
With no Round 13 coverage I’m not overly excited about any other Titans at the moment despite the great win against Manly.
I can’t see myself investing in AJ Brimson anytime soon with his unfortunate rate of picking up injuries. Poor fella.

Analysis: Parramatta are the most relevant team in Supercoach at the moment due to some hot form and the fact they play the three major bye rounds.
After a slow start to the year, many gun Supercoach prospects are at affordable rates, and they have a nice draw with upcoming games against the Titans and Raiders.

Dylan Brown, J’maine Hopgood, Mitch Moses, Ryan Matterson, Clint Gutherson and Will Penisini are all high on the radar of Supercoaches.
But we can’t have all, as Parramatta have two byes in the Origin period outside of the major bye weeks, those being Round 14 and 18, so it’ll deplete your side on those weeks.

Incredibly, recruit Andrew Davey has been named to start on the edge for the Eels.
Ryan Matterson will play off the bench, but he did this last year and would play 55 straight and still score well so it’s not the end of the world for owners by any means, although not ideal.
He gets through more work in the middle so the PPM goes up, it may be a concern for Hopgood’s minutes.
Should Matto start off the bench, I’d tip him to play around about that 55 minute mark. In games last year where he played between 50-61 minutes (13 games) he averaged 68 points.
The pack is every chance to line up differently come Sunday anyway.
