Quantium data analysis: True player ownership stats, Round 9

Actuary Adam Driussi provides player ownership breakdowns to allow you to differ your side from those atop the rankings.

NRL

After a brutal round 9 in terms of finding 17 starting players, it’s nice to be entering some normality entering Magic Round.

Numerous ‘bye relevant’ players scored strongly in Round 9, meaning that if you want to bring a Clint Gutherson type into your team for the bye rounds it might be now or never.

Let’s look at the true player ownership stats entering Magic Round – remember that these stats are prior to any trades made this week.

Fullback

The table below sets out the proportion of teams in the top 100, top 1,000, top 5,000, top 10,000, top 20,000 and top 100,000 that own each fullback.

The FLB ownership stats are interesting to me – I would have thought more top teams would have sold down Turbo.  Instead, more teams sold down Reece Walsh to bring in James Tedesco.  I was the opposite…I finally brought in Walsh and managed to stop his run of form!

Clint Gutherson is now owned by 9% of the top 5,000 teams – an inspired move.

CTW

Round 9 saw plenty of CTWs increase in ownership.  Joseph Manu (+17%), Tyrell Sloan (+10%), Stephen Crichton, Jack Bird and Alex Johnston all increased in ownership.

Manu is now the most owned CTW in the top 1,000 teams.

Five-Eighth

The main change at five-eighth last week was several leading teams trading Cameron Munster to Dylan Brown.  D-Bags duly delivered for his new owners and is now owned by just under 50% of leading teams.

Half Back

Not a lot of change at HFB this week.  This week will be more interesting as Nathan Cleary is one of the most traded out players and Mitch Moses is one of the most traded in players.

2RF

Relative to other positions, there was less movement in ownership of 2RFs last week – largely a function of the other positions being problematic for teams to field a full squad.

Players such as Eliesa Katoa, Tohu Harris and Cameron Murray were sold down whilst Joseph Tapine and J’Maine Hopgood both increased.

FRF

Not surprisingly, there were plenty of changes at FRF last week.  Around 15% of teams sold Payne Haas last week.  Around 20% sold Christian Welch (or half of his owners) whilst 10% sold Tohu Harris and 5% sold Max King.

The most popular players traded in were Tapine (+25%), AFB (+15%) and Wiremu Greig (+5%).

HOK

Despite many teams struggling to hooker last week with the Harry – Soni Luke combo, most teams sat tight meaning there was very little change in ownership at hooker.  I guess there really was no obvious candidate worth trading our Harry for.
