Weekly wrap: Round 16 studs & duds

Our SuperCoach world might have returned to normality with no byes to fret over, but my team returned to the no-good shi*show that I’ve become so accustomed to over the last month and a half.

Admittedly, I did resign myself to a less than average score early on in the round after choosing to play it safe by looping Jaspa Fletcher’s 76.

Yes, this led to a poor score of just 2391, moving me down 1142 spots to 4105^th.

However, it gave me another week of sample size to make a decision on who to bring in as my final premo, and I can now say with absolute confidence that not another week will go by without Zach Merrett in my side.

Callum Mills has also dropped to the mouth-watering price of $404k, and his 76% CBAs on the weekend from 76% TOG suggests he’s back to his best footy.

Looking ahead, the goal from here is to wait for Jaspa Fletcher to peak in price, at which point he’ll make way for a basement price NPP and IF Clarry returns, I’ll use the cash to bring him in for whoever is underperforming the most.

Brisbane v Richmond

• All eyes were on Lachie Neale (143) and Josh Dunkley (107) as the most popular VC options from this game. Lachie dutifully delivered, but Dunks was unfortunately subbed off at 3QT after the game had been put to bed
• Darcy Wilmot (120) and Will Ashcroft (111) both should have been traded by now but if not, take these scores and run!
• Jaspa Fletcher (76) earned his first price rise
• Deven Robertson (75) bounced back from last week’s 33
• For the first time all season, Tim Taranto (72) dropped below 90

Sydney v Geelong

• After averaging just 84 from rounds 10-13, Errol Gulden (124) currently has a three-round average of 133
• Callum Mills (106) is the biggest must-have of all time
• Angus Sheldrick (102) continues to put his name in lights as a potential ‘cheapie of the year’ candidate. With a three-round average of 95, it’s clear he is the one that got away from me this season
• Lewis ‘The Pelican’ Melican (85) was on just 18 at half time
• Tom Stewart (147) also had a relatively slow opening term but in typical T.Stew fashion, he found a way to record yet another massive score

Adelaide v North Melbourne

• It’s time for me to eat my humble pie… Ben Keays (124) is legit. Remarkably, he averaged 67 points across the first 10 games of the season; a stark contrast to his current five-round average of 113
• Jordan Dawson (102) and Rory Laird (84) couldn’t replicate their heroics from last week. Particularly with Laird, those who chucked the captaincy on him (32% of the top 1%) would have been wishing they could turn back time
• The bye evidently paid dividends for Jack Ziebell (93). Although, he copped a corky on the hamstring in the last quarter and it honestly wouldn’t surprise me if he takes this upcoming weekend off to nurse it
• Don’t be alarmed regarding this score from Harry Sheezel (79). He still managed to rack up 31 touches but a whopping seven clangers severely hurt his SuperCoach score

Western Bulldogs v Fremantle

• Tim English (127) put up his 11^th 120+ score of the year
• Tom Liberatore (121) recorded an equal game-high ten clearances
• It might not have been the massive score Marcus Bontempelli (114) owners were hoping for, but to score over 110 with just 51% DE is very impressive
• This was Adam Treloar’s (112) lowest score in his last four games

• Caleb Daniel’s (77) run of scores comes to an end
• Caleb Serong (138) dominated with 38 touches
• Sean Darcy (125) was back as the out-and-out R1, forcing Luke Jackson (30) into a less impactful role up forward
• Luke Ryan (97) was forced to man up directly on Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (77) after half time
• Andrew Brayshaw (80) had a quiet second half

Gold Coast v Collingwood

• Back-to-back tons for Sam Flanders (119)! He did only have five CBAs though
• Noah Anderson (109) racked up 35 disposals
• Matthew Rowell (104) only had 20 touches but managed to grab eight tackles, two goals, and game-highs in both contested possessions (17) and clearances (9)

• It’s not often you see two ruckmen have absolute stinkers in the same game, but Jarrod Witts (75) and Darcy Cameron (61) managed to do just that!
• Bailey Humphrey (53) is starting to rapidly drop in price
• Whoever said Nick Daicos (149) can’t get a hard ball clearly doesn’t watch enough footy. 36 touches, 10 tackles, a team-high 13 contested possessions… Literally just give him the Brownlow now
• Tom Mitchell (92) couldn’t crack the ton for the second week in a row

Essendon v Port Adelaide

• Not owning Zach Merrett (168) is becoming near impossible to handle
• Darcy Parish (131) kicked 0.4 and had just 58% DE… This score could have been MASSIVE
• Ben Hobbs (104) has a three-round average of 103
• Mason Redman (99) bounced back from last week

• Jordan Ridley (78) failed to ton up for the first time since Round 8
• Niko rightfully hyped up Dan Houston (156) in his article last week, but I don’t think anyone expected him to be so bang on! Not only did Houston collect 32 touches and 7 marks, he also kicked one of the best after-the-siren goals of all time! Against the Bombers no less!!
• Connor Rozee’s (141) CBAs might have dropped 22% but it didn’t affect his scoring!
• Zak Butters (109) continues to do his best to keep up with Naicos in the Brownlow race

Hawthorn v Carlton

• You’ll only need $30k to turn Seamus Mitchell (87) into Callum Mills…
• Will Day’s (65) CBAs were heavily impacted by the return of Josh Ward (105)
• Adam Cerra (130) has seven 127+ scores in his last ten games
• Sam Docherty (108) has made the return to half-back where he belongs
• It’s not quite the 120 average I predicted on the pod, but Patrick Cripps (104) is heading in the right direction to end this season on a high
• Lachie Fogarty (99) and David Cunningham (97) are both popular downgrade options this week but I think just going all the way down to a basement price NPP is the better way to go

Melbourne v GWS

• Similar to Darcy Parish, Christian Petracca (128) almost went nuclear in this game. He had 34 touches and 0.4
• Jack Viney (127) collected 41 disposals, although 11 of which were clangers
• Not even Max Gawn (111) AND Brodie Grundy (72) could stop Kieren Briggs (87)
• Tom Green (128) has a 127 and 128 in his last two games
• Stephen Coniglio’s (86) disposal was once again poor
• Harry Himmelberg (84) looks to have settled back into defence

West Coast v St Kilda

• Shannon Hurn (144) and Alex Witherden (111) both mopped up the footy down back
• Ryan Maric (76) was a late inclusion but definitely did enough to hold his spot this week
• Brad Crouch (134) had a hugely contested game, headlined by 17 tackles
• Jack Sinclair (116) shrugged off a tag to record his fourth straight ton
• Thankfully, Rowan Marshall (104) wasn’t subbed off this time!
• Jack Steele (86) disappointed yet again… I had faith in him once upon a time, but not anymore
