Watchlist: Ranking every club’s trade targets, Rd 4

Each round this season, I’ll share a list of my trade targets, ranked in order of priority and value.

This season I’ve separated them out by team, to assist with trade planning double game and bye rounds.

Adelaide Strikers 

1. Jamie Overton (157.3k bat/bowl)

Removed: D’Arcy Short

It’s all about Overton for the Strikers. With a regular 4 overs and batting at 6, he looks essential, at least for the Strikers’ round 6 double. I’d probably prioritise him over Paul Walter given Strikers’ double is before that of the Heat. Ideally get both ASAP though. 

Brisbane Heat 

1. Paul Walter ($155.1k bat / bowl)

See Jamie Overton above but in teal! Almost the exact same role. If anything, I think Paul looks slightly better on the eye test, but I’d still favour Overton given the earlier double.

Hobart Hurricanes

Sam Hain (93.6k bat)

Added: Sam Hain

Removed: Nikhil Chaudhary, Chris Jordan

Chris Jordan ($126.3k bowl), Tim David (129.5k bat)

Many coaches will be looking to free up funds for the likes of Overton and Walter, and I think Hain is worth a look. Post price changes I’m guessing he comes in around $70k. He’s had a poor start to the BBL season but averages nearly 40 with the bat in T20s.

Chaudhary didn’t bat or bowl last game, which makes him a no go for me. Jordan can now wait until the Hurricanes double in round 7.

Melbourne Renegades

Nil

Removed: Fraser McGurk, Sutherland, Ur Rahman, Richardson, Clarke, QDK

The Gades’ time has come and passed with no double rounds remaining. Most, if not all there players are trade outs now. They’re the only team on the bye in round 7, so keeping at least one will be important for looping purposes.

Sutherland has the best role in the side but is set to lose a stack of cash, and there are priority trade ins from other sides.

Melbourne Stars

1. Beau Webster (163k bat)
2. Glenn Maxwell ($130k bat/bowl)
3. Marcus Stoinis (106.8k bat/bowl)

Removed: Steketee, Harper, Stoinis

Webster jagged a key role as 4th seamer and batting at 3 for the Stars. With another double to come in round 5 and a negative breakeven, big money incoming, he’s probably the second best trade in apart from Dan Sams for round 4.

Perth Scorchers 

1. Sam Whiteman ($62.5k wkp/bat)
2. Cooper Connolly ($87.8k bat/bowl)
3. Hamish McKenzie ($56.1k bowl) 

No changes to the watchlist from last round for the Scorchers. Their guns will be great options following their round 4 and 5 byes. Until then it’s just about cheapies and loop options, for which Whiteman, Connolly and McKenzie are all still options. Keep an eye on Connolly’s role tonight with no Turner, as he may move down the order.

Sydney Sixers

1. Jack Edwards ($90.4k bat)

Edwards picked up Curran’s role for the Sixers, so could make some cash and be playable for the next few rounds. The lack of double games for the Sixers is annoying, but Edwards still looks a decent value play.

Sydney Thunder 

1. Daniel Sams (147.5k bat/bowl)
2. Alex Hales ($117.6k bat)
3. Tanveer Sangha ($103.3k bowl)
4. Jason Sangha (113.6k bat)
5. Cameron Bancroft ($157.2k bat)

The man, the myth, the legend, Dan Sams is back! Going 150+ thanks to 20th over heroics with bat and ball. He looks the clear best captaincy option this week. 

Alex Hales bottoms out in price in perfect time for the double. I think it’s tight between him and Tanveer Sangha for the second best Thunder trade in. Hales will have a far better BE and with two games I’d hope he gets to 20 in at least one of them. He’ll also still be a decent option opening the batting if one the Thunder games is shortened due to weather. 

Tanveer Sangha is still the best option from the Thunder bowling attack for mine. The short boundaries in round 3 didn’t suit him, contributing to his low score. 

Jason Sangha could be an option as a punt, but it would be just that, with no recent run of games for the Thunder no. 3. 

Cameron Bancroft could be an option but will see a decent price rise and come in fairly expensive, especially compared to the likes of Hales. He could be a captaincy option, but I’m not sure it’s worth the risk given Dan Sams’ round 3 form turnaround. 

I’m not interested in Ollie Davies ($134.7k bat) batting at 4.
