Strikers vs Stars

Result: Strikers won by 7 wickets

Takes:

  • Adelaide Oval is a cracking place to bat this year. Batters over bowlers there this year (like most years to be fair) for sure.
  • Big changes for both sides to start round 5.
  • Three changes for the Stars. Out were Rauf, Mir and Merlo. Replacements were Steketee, Rocchiccioli and Lawrence. Lawrence opened the batting, meaning Harper was listed to come in at number 8!
  • Two changes for the Strikers. Out were Payne (managed) and Weatherald. Ins were Doggett and Manenti. Overton moved up to number 5 in the batting order.
  • Lynn was superb. 83 off 42 balls. Matty Short lit up the AO again with 56 off 32 balls. D’Arcy made 25 off 20 and scored well enough for owners when you include his run out too.
  • Maxy was the pick of the bowlers for the Stars. 2/21 off 3 overs and then 28 off 17 with the bat. A cheeky catch at long on helped too and the popular VC/C delivered in spades.
  • Two expensive overs for Stoinis weren’t ideal, finishing with 0/29. But there was a sense of Deja vu as he fired with the bat in the power surge, just as he did last year. 55 off just 19 balls as he completed the big run chase for the Stars.

  • No overs for Webster. Luckily, the big fella fired with the bat. A lovely anchor role making 66 not out off 48 balls, including one mammoth 6 into the third tier of the grandstand!
  • No time needed to adjust for Dan Lawrence. 50 off 26 to get the Stars moving early.
  • No joy to Wasim traders like myself. He got his 4 overs in but finished with 0/40. Hopefully a bounce back in game 2!
  • Potential owner bias alert here but I thought Steketee actually bowled okay and didn’t deserve 0/42. On another day he could have had 2 or 3 wickets if some lofted edges had gone to fielders. Some Stars boundary riders need to be switched on and perhaps a little more alert in the field. He should hold his spot for game 2.
  • Seven bowlers again used for the Strikers. Boyce was the clear pick of them. In a game filled with runs, 1/15 off his 4 overs is incredible. He also did not concede a boundary!
  • Overton was the only other bowler to get 4 overs. Batting 5 and bowling 4 overs. A prime SC role. He could go large over the double next round!
  • 1 over for Matt Short (and 7th bowler used), so monitor over their double. He could be a sell candidate to help us fund trades after the break. If Manenti goes out of the side again though I think we see more Matt Short overs.

Hurricanes vs Thunder

Result: Hurricanes won by 7 wickets

Takes:

  • Thunder went into this game with the same line up as their previous match. Hurricanes making a change to try and reverse their current form. McDermott in replacing Hain at number 4.
  • The Thunder could not get going during their innings. It is not normally a good sign when your batter at number 8 (Chris Green) is by far and away your best at the crease.
  • Only 5 bowlers used by the Canes. No Anderson or David used for those looking at their bowling prospects in preparation for their upcoming double.

  • A real team bowling effort from the Hurricanes. CJ had his best bowling performance picking up 2/20 from his 4 overs. Dooley was back to Dooley form of last year with 2/33. The surprise packet was Chaudhary bowling, then bowling 4 overs and bowling well! 2/26 off his 4 overs. Meredith is looking dangerous and bowled better than 0/31 suggests and Ellis was his usual self and could have picked up bulk wickets on another day. 1/39 for any people that have picked him up early.
  • McDermott found form. 53 off 34 with owners very happy he was able to top score in the match with 83 SC points in a rain effected round.
  • Sams passed 20, took a catch and captured a wicket for owners. A very respectable 63 SC points. With the Thunder top order not firing on all cylinders lately he is getting opportunity with the bat. Just be wary if they add another batter to that line up and he moves down to number 7.
  • Potential back injury to Wade? This could impact who takes the gloves (McDermott?) and will force a possible change to the batting order.

Heat vs Sixers

Result: No result

Takes:

  • Gee it was wet in Brisbane. The kind of day when you wake up, you know that there is going to be no game. PNAU were good though.

Stars vs Renegades

Result: Stars won by 8 wickets

Takes:

  • Reduced game of 14 overs for each side. Two changes for the Renegades. Cox (remember him from game one?) replaced Joe Clarke and Richo was back for Mujeeb. One change for the Stars. Merlo came back in for Corey Rocchiccioli.
  • Stuttering is a word that comes to mind when describing the Renegades and their batting. QDK top scored with 23.
  • One over for both Stoinis and Webster. Expensive for Stoinis (0/12) and economical and wicket-producing for Webster (1/4).
  • The surprise was Dan Lawrence who took 2 wickets in his tight two overs. 2/8. I didn’t think he’d even bowl!
  • Wickets for Wasim, Steketee and Paris as the Stars bowled well on a sticky, slow wicket.
  • No overs for Will Sutherland. Not sure if there was an injury there but I didn’t see that coming. Even Wells bowled an over of leggies!
  • Rogers was solid as a rock at the top of the order with 42 off 34 balls. Maxy provided the fireworks at the end with 32 off 15. He also bowled an incredibly tidy three overs picking up 1/8. Add in two catches in an all-round performance. Maxy at the moment is batting at 4 and regularly bowling overs in a supreme Supercoach role. A ridiculously low breakeven too will mean you should look to hold and find other players to bring in these expensive Scorchers ahead of their enticing schedule.
