Thommo’s Takes: Round 8 SuperCoach BBL recap

2019/20 SuperCoach BBL champion Thommo Aitken looks at the key talking points out of Round 8.

BBL

Welcome to our review article at SC Playbook where we review the action from the previous round and see what impact it had on our side and what we can learn from it.

It was an old-fashioned single game round for each team. Did you pick the right players? Avoid the stinker score and have a solid team?

Did you get a maximum score from an unexpected source like a Jakey Weatherald?

Did a star like Andrew Tye put on a clinic? Or were you a Steve Smith owner?

Hurricanes vs Strikers

Result: Strikers won by 8 wickets

Takes:

  • Wade in for the Canes and Hain out after his double duck last round. Carey and Lynn out replaced by Nielsen and Weatherald for the team from Adelaide.
  • Massive kudos to Weatherald. 4 digs for 18 runs last year. 3 innings for 11 runs so far this year. Big shoes to fill with Chris Lynn’s injury. A must win game for the Strikers and he goes and blasts 80 off 32 balls for 115 SC points.
  • Lots of starts for the Hurricanes, but nobody went on with the job. Wright, Jewell (batting at 4), Chaudhary and David all passing 20 runs, but nobody made it count with a score of 50 plus.
  • Chaudhary with a great single round score of 80 SC points with some runs, a wicket and economy bowling points.
  • Likewise Matt Short with a super single round score. 3 tight overs with the ball and yet again runs the for SC king. 88 SC points.
  • Overton with a couple of wickets. With a weakened Adelaide batting line up, people thought he might get a chance with the bat, but it wasn’t to be. 45 SC points in a single game is handy enough though.
  • Boyce impressive. 69 SC points and economic with the ball yet again.  Who needs Rashid Khan?
  • Hopefully people looped Canes bowlers as they only took the 2 wickets. We might get Patrick Dooley cheap again next year and he has the 2nd year blues this year. 2.5 overs for 53 runs and 0 SC points. Hatz might get a go next game for the Canes I reckon.

Sixers vs Thunder

Result: Sixers won by 19 runs

Takes:

  • Ins for the Thunder included Warner (via helicopter), Hatcher and Gray for his debut. Outs were Sandhu, Gilkes and Ross. For the Sixers in came Smith and Kerr, replacing Hughes and Curran.
  • Thunder with 6 genuine bowling options which meant overs were shared. Something to consider before we look at them for trade ins before their double in the last round. 4 overs for Sams, Green and Sangha. 3 for McAndrew and Hatcher and 2 for Gray.
  • Both McAndrew and Sangha picked up multiple wickets and look likely targets for the Thunder double.
  • Sams bowled the overs we expected and dismissed Steve Smith who I am sure some people would of traded in for a golden duck first ball of the match. After a promising start Sams only scored 36 SC points but that is not the worst in a single game week.
  • Philippe, batting at number 3 was the pick of the Sixers batters making 47 off 35 as well as picking up some catches when the Sixers were fielding. 77 SC points and a good option for the WK position during the single game round for owners.

  • After a promising first few overs, the Sixers bowlers strangled the Thunder and stagnated their run rate on a sluggish pitch. The star of the show was SOK with 4 overs 3/13. 107 SC points for any owners.
  • Any owners who went early with Hales would have been pleased with the single game score. 3 catches and 28 off 17 led to 83 SC points which is a great result.
  • Warner’s slow run rate meant he only scored 37 SC points. I wonder if people will loop that or look for higher points with not many games to go?
  • People may have gone early on a Thunder bat. I personally went with Davies and anyone who went with him, Kohler-Cadmore or Bancroft were not rewarded as of yet. Hopefully next round on a deck like Manuka.
  • The Sixers, much like the Thunder had six genuine bowling options. 4 overs for Abbott (who arrived via lime bike to rival Warner and his helicopter!), SOK and Dwarshuis. 3 overs for Kerr (well 2.5!) and Murphy and 2 overs for Jack Edwards.
  • We spoke about it on the unpublished audio issues podcast that myself, Maxy and Timmy did, that we really like this match up for Sixers bowlers. I mentioned SOK as an option (I promise!) and Abbott who ended up with 55 SC points. Dwarshuis with 60 SC points which is good and anyone who took the ultimate POD of Hayden Kerr who ended up on 72 SC points would be happy with that result. The only reason I didn’t trade any of these players in is next week’s match up against Perth in Perth which scares me a little. Hopefully though the mighty Sixers can put on a big show over in the west.

Scorchers vs Heat

Result: Scorchers won by 35 runs

Takes:

  • Mass changes all around for this fixture played in extremely warm conditions. 3 changes for the Scorchers. Ins were Tye, Eskinazi and Hobson. Outs were McKenzie, Crawley and Richardson. 4 changes for the Heat as the batting order was virtually unrecognisable. Outs were Khawaja, Labuschagne, Munro and Billings. Ins were McSweeney (and made captain), Brown, Peirson and Byrant.
  • Tall Paul didn’t bowl until the 13th over. But as he seems to do, he picked up the wicket of Evans after Evans and Connolly started to rebuild the Perth innings after the top 4 batters for the Scorchers were dismissed cheaply.
  • Neser bowled 3 overs early and took 2 wickets. He took another blinder in the field. Standard Neser things.
  • Hobson the top scorer for Perth. 48 not out off 30 balls.  A bit like Weatherald a totally unexpected SC pick that would have been good!
  • Only Spencer and Xavier bowled 4 overs for the Heat.
  • A new opening combination for the Heat of Brown and Peirson. They clicked and got the Heat off to a very nice start. An opening wicket partnership of over 50 runs.
  • After the opening partnership, it was all the Scorchers. Tye was clearly the best bowler for the Scorchers. 3.5 overs (including a maiden) and 4/14. A massive 146 SC points in his best performance of the BBL season.
  • Morris also with a handy spell. 3/26 from his 4 overs.
  • Hardie bowled 4 overs, including the opening over again. 1/22 of his 4 overs.

Renegades vs Stars

Result: Renegades won by 6 wickets

Takes:

  • One change for the Stars. Merlo out for NCN who was back for his first outing since the opening match of the tournament. 3 changes for the Renegades. The champ Finch was back along with Richo and familiar face Akeal Hosein. Outs were QDK, Siddle and Kellapotha.
  • Akeal picked up from his form from last year. 2/18 off his 4 overs.
  • Richo with his best performance of the BBL this tournament. 2/17 off his 4 overs.
  • No overs for Will Sutherland. Finchy on the mic mentioned he is carrying some sort of ankle issue at the moment. He was promoted to number 5 in the power surge, but only scored 10 runs.

  • Starts for many Stars batters but no big score. Maxy hit them well early but was reckless and dismissed for 20 off 10 balls.
  • Cartwright top scored for the Stars with 38 off 30.
  • Nathan Coulter-Nile was the only multiple wicket taker for the Stars.
  • Over watch. 2 highly expensive overs for Stoinis. 1 over each for Beau and Maxy.
  • Finch suffered the same fate as Steve Smith.
  • Marsh has had a great tournament after a delayed start. 64 not out off 49 balls.
