NRL Supercoach Analysis: Round 6 Team Lists

After a frantic opening to the season, hopefully Supercoaches are beginning to find some stability in their roster.

A few cheapies are starting to peak in price, meaning we can start to strengthen the depth of our squads as a result of having that greater cash to play with.

We’re working out the reliable scorers, and the duds, so hopefully there’s plenty of regular 1000+ scores on the horizon.

Round 6 was something else, at least Friday night’s Roosters v Bulldogs fixture was.

Black Friday sunk a number of Supercoaches, with popular fullback James Tedesco and POD halfback Sam Walker leaving the field early with HIAs.

Enormously popular CTW pick Dom Young recorded the second lowest Supercoach score of all-time in the fixture with -15 points following his send-off.

I’ve seen teams out there carrying all three, with Young as captain for -30 points! Ah dear.

When your luck’s out, your lucks out….

For the record, the lowest score of all-time was Nathan Brown’s -18 last year against Manly (thanks Rando for that one).

The Cooma Stallions avoided the brunt of the injury drama to knock out a strong 1,231 points to move up a fair whack into 7,682^nd overall.

We’re heading very much in the right direction after two strong weeks, with the season very much on track.

Having jumped around 50,000 spots in two weeks, hopefully this is somewhat reassuring for those who have had a few bad rounds, it doesn’t take much to turn things around, so stick strong!

KNIGHTS v ROOSTERS

Analysis: Kalyn Ponga, why would anyone ever doubt you mate?

After being mass sold a few weeks back, Ponga has recorded a three round average of 107 points!

After the slow start, he’s now just dropped $3k from his starting price and sits with a breakeven of 33.

The scariest thing, I don’t think he or the Knights have been overly impressive…

KP is leading the Dally M voting, it’s frightening to think of what he could average if they continue to click.

At home against the injury ravaged Roosters this week, into the Bulldogs, Dolphins, Warriors, Tigers and Titans I’d be petrified not owning him.

Jayden Brailey started against the Dragons and played a promising 60 minutes for just 37 points.

At $308k, he looms as a potential downgrade at hooker in a week or two, particularly for any Lussick or Levi owners.

Kai Pearce-Paul can’t find an attacking stat to save himself, but they will come. 

When they do, he can average 70+ with some potentially large scores in there.

Greg Marzhew has been named on the extended bench as he looks to return from injury.

Analysis: Dom Young and James Tedesco are sells following injury/suspension.

I was grabbing Joey Manu last week, then was turned off by the rain and tough centre match-ups with Stephen Crichton and Bradman Best to come.

He was on about 16 at halftime and it looked a great dodge, until Teddy was injured and Manu moved to fullback where he evolves into a Supercoach freak.

He went on to knock out 108 points!

Fortunately, my Val Holmes alternative played out well too otherwise it’d have been a bitter pill to swallow.

Manu has been named at fullback this week where he should again score well, with Connor Watson at five-eighth.

He’s still reasonably priced at $698k with a breakeven of 39.

If Tedesco returns next week which is likely he’ll go back to centre which is less appealing, but he’s still a keeper there with early bye coverage, so he looks a good purchase.

With a recent history of concussions, it wouldn’t shock to see Teddy be given another week also which could see Manu play fullback next week.

Angus Crichton, welcome back ole mate.

One of the best Supercoach 2RFs in recent years is back playing 80 minutes and looking terrific in the process.

He scored 83 against the Bulldogs in the wet, with a try-assist, line-assist, 35 tackles and 16 runs. Great going!

At $414k with a breakeven of 24 he looks a solid buy, however with the Roosters underwhelming form and plethora of quality second-row options I think I’m happy to wait another week to see him lock down that spot.

Despite the drama, Terrell May played just 20 minutes for 21 points! What’s doing Robbo?

The injuries impacted rotations significantly, so I wouldn’t be concerned about Terrell who likely plays big minutes this week.

STORM v BULLDOGS

Friday, 6pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne

Analysis: Ryan Papenhuyzen managed just 50 against the Broncos, but he looked the goods in the win so I wouldn’t be too concerned if you bought him.

He gets a mouth-watering match-up with an injury depleted Bulldogs side this week where he’s a genuine captaincy option.

Eli Katoa scored two tries in that game, and set-up another for 110 points.

He’s averaging 74 points for the season, and at just $681k with a breakeven of 38 can be purchased at a reasonable price.

Jahrome Hughes terrorised the Broncos resulting in 108 Supercoach points.

As good as he was, I still think Cleary, Hynes, SJ are the superior halfback options.

I do however think he can tonne up again this week against the Dogs.

With the likes of Robson, Koroisau and Marshall-King all scoring well, the question must be asked if Harry Grant will be required prior to Origin this year?

He will be the top scoring hooker in Supercoach by end of season you’d imagine, but with the Origin impact creeping up quickly he might be one to wait on.

Analysis: Josh Curran got dual! Repeat, Curran got dual!

Guru has finally done something good for us Supercoaches, with his #Curranfordual campaign prevailing this week.

With positional updates in, he is now FRF-2RF which makes him so much more appealing…

He’s going solid as a 2RF with a 59 point average, but with the ability to now plug him into that horrific FRF position he becomes so much more valuable.

At $518k he looks a decent buy, although with all the injuries, a trip to Melbourne, the Knights, then a bye, perhaps Round 9 is a better time to buy?

He also provides early major bye round coverage.

He’s been named on the edge again this week, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him revert to the bench as per last week’s late change.

Drew Hutchison is at $427k with an average of 42.6, he can be moved on prior to that bye, but it’s not urgent as such.

Jacob Kiraz has disappointed after his tonne a few weeks back, he has just one score over 50 points.

Owners have a decision to make there as his 34 in base and additional tacklebreaks and offloads are tremendous, however as feared he just isn’t getting any attacking stats to bolster those scores.

Regarding major attacking stats, across five games he has just one try, no try-assists, one linebreak and one line-assist.

He’s averaging 16.6 runs per game, 4.6 tackle breaks and 1.8 offloads.

Matt Burton went BIG against the Roosters in the wet with 147 points thanks to a hat-trick of tries.

Despite that huge score, it boosted his average to just 62.8 for the season.

He has lows of 15 against the Eels and 35 against the Titans to his name.

Despite the -33 breakeven, with the Storm clash and bye looming and an injury hit roster, I’m not interested at all.

Sammy Hughes, come on down!

Playing off the bench he scored 72 points in 43 minutes with a try, 23 tackles, four tacklebreaks and 11 runs.

He made $33k last week and has a -3 breakeven, please give him decent minutes again Ciraldo.

BRONCOS v DOLPHINS

Friday, 8pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

Analysis: After a treacherous start to the season, the Broncos finally get some easier fixtures which makes them far more Supercoach relevant.

They have upcoming clashes against the injury-hit Dolphins, Raiders and Tigers.

I’m not overly interested in them just yet, but they are firmly back on the radar, particularly with Reece Walsh returning and Payne Haas not far off.

If Walsh wins the kicking duties over Kotoni Staggs while Adam Reynolds is out he’ll become a serious super POD play.

Keep an eye on behemoth Ben Te Kura at $204k after scoring 57 points with a try on his NRL debut.

He hasn’t been named but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him come in for Tristan Sailor.

I reluctantly sold Jesse Arthars last week to get in Val Holmes, he went well with 81 points including a bombed try over the line which would have seen him score 100+.

With Deine Mariner injured it looks as though he’ll move to the right wing where Reece Walsh does his best work.

At $448k he could be in for a big month ahead, if I still owned I’d be playing him in all those upcoming fixtures.

Xavier Willison returns from a head knock, he’s set for his first price rise after this game and is currently priced at $265k with a breakeven of -6.

Analysis: Despite leading the competition, the poor old Dolphins can’t take a trick with injuries this season.

This is the real litmus test for Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and whether or not he’s a season-long keeper or not.

He’s averaging 86 points so far, and his breakeven has risen to 52.

I suspect he may be one to cash in after this week, but if he can score well against competition heavyweights Brisbane this week then perhaps he can be held long term?

Wait and reassess as he hasn’t put a foot wrong so far.

Jack Bostock has made owners $165k so far, with more money to come with a breakeven of 10. 

Hopefully he can go 50+ again this week to keep that cash flowing, if he can’t he’ll also be on the chopping block next week.

Tom Flegler has been named but remains in doubt with an AC joint injury.

WARRIORS v SEA EAGLES

Saturday, 3pm, Go Media Stadium, Auckland

Analysis: Shaun Johnson makes serious appeal with his current form, and more importantly the Warriors form.

The Warriors have a friendly run of games incoming at home against the Sea Eagles,  Dragons and Titans.

SJ knocked out 112 against the Rabbitohs and is back goal-kicking fulltime.

He’s $691k with a breakeven of 21.

I think he’s a terrific buy, the question though is whether or not you’re willing to run without Nicho Hynes or Nathan Cleary on return from injury next week?

Maybe SJ is a three week play, then reassess whether he’s a hold or sell after that?

Very enticing, but I think I’m just going to aim for that Nicho-Cleary combo.

Te Maire Martin was superb in his first game of the season, scoring 98 points against the Bunnies.

He’s dual 5/8-FLB at $363k so monitor how he goes this week, however he’s never been overly Supercoach relevant.

In his four 80 minute games at five-eighth to begin last year he averaged 47.5 points.

That being said, in a red-hot Warriors side that could change.

Super POD Jackson Ford continues to perform, scoring 82 with yet another try, and 51 in base.

Not for me at $694k, but it’s hard to knock the results of a bloke averaging 76 points this season!

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak returns, pushing Roger Tuivasa-Sheck back to centre.

Analysis: Manly made a statement to the competition with a win over Penrith, remarkably a week after losing to the Dragons.

Tommy Turbo silenced any doubters after a stinking performance against the Red V, belting out 111 points against the defending premiers.

This fixture against the Warriors will again be extremely tough, but following this Manly face the Titans, Eels, Raiders and Dolphins where it’ll be very scary not to own Turbo.

Ben Trbojevic lives to fight another day with 48 points in 80 minutes, dropping his breakeven to 12.

With the injury to Reuben Garrick he shifted to centre, hence the additional minutes, but a good sign nonetheless that’s sure to have Anthony Seibold fairly pleased with the youngest of the Urbos.

With Garrick out, he’s been named at centre where’ll play the full 80, albeit with lesser workload.

Daly Cherry-Evans went bonkers in his milestone game that saw him become the most cap Sea Eagle of all-time.

The skipper notched 128 points against Penrith.

EELS v COWBOYS

Saturday, 5:30pm, CommBank Stadium, Sydney

Analysis: Blaize Talagi scored just 30 against the Raiders, netting $70k with that low breakeven last week.

He now sits with a breakeven of 5, which means nothing on account of being dropped this week in favour of Daejarn Asi.

Dylan Brown saved his score against Canberra with a late try-assist to notch 55 points.

On paper that’s fine, but he has been far from his best since moving to No.7.

The Cowboys defence is poor, then they face the Dolphins, so I’m holding strong in hope he works better alongside Asi.

In two games with Asi late last year he had scores of 88 against a rampant Roosters ooutift and 81 against a full-strength Panthers side.

Joey Lussick lost $18k last week and now sits with a breakeven of 53.

He can be sold, but as long as he’s playing 80 minutes it’s by no means urgent.

Shaun Lane is a long way from his best, and minutes aren’t to blame for his 47 point average.

He’s played the full 80 in every game so far, but has only recorded one try and one linebreak as his only major attacking stats this season.

His base of 40 is ordinary for an 80 minute forward.

Most notably, for a prolific offloader of season’s past, he’s had just two this year!

While he isn’t passing the eye test at all, at that price in big game time with next to no attacking stats I’m happy enough to hold for now unless minutes change.

Maika Sivo has been dropped.

Analysis: Scotty D goes bang!

Look, it wasn’t a surprise against the Titans, but for those who sold off a prime fullback spot to get him in, that 144 points was money well spent.

The upcoming draw against a hurting Eels into the Sharks, both in Sydney, into the Panthers is relatively okay.

After that though, they face the Dolphins, Titans, Rabbitohs and Tigers.

Provided he misses Origin, he then plays the first major bye round which adds to the appeal.

I think he’s a good buy this week, but I wouldn’t be selling Ponga or Turbo for him.

Latrell and Teddy owners have a big decision as to which player they are opting for.

Reece Robson just keeps delivering, notching 117 against the Titans to take his season average to 78 points.

He’s basing a solid 45 points and is playing big minutes. He’s an indefinite hold for now, potentially up until Origin.

I brought in Val Holmes and captained on the weekend.

It felt like all he did was set up one try and kick goals, but he still cruised to 93 points.

He’s averaging 92 points this season and is fast becoming a must-have, but at $868k with a breakeven of 109 is he worth it? Probably…

He’s basing 35 in a red-hot attacking outfit with goal-kicking duties. 

Tom Chester wins the centre spot of the injured Zac Laybutt and becomes a big watch at $353k ahead of his second game of the season.

RABBITOHS v SHARKS

Saturday, 7:35pm, Accor Stadium, Sydney

Analysis: You don’t really want to be touching a Rabbitohs player with a 50-foot pole at the moment.

They have the bye next week, so avoid for now, and reassess if they show any sort of form.

Damien Cook has been dropped to 18th man in favour of Peter Mamouzelos, I am gobsmacked.

Exciting rookie Jye Gray debuts at fullback in place of the suspended Latrell Mitchell.

The kid can seriously play, let’s see what pressure he can put on Latrell in the next few games.

Analysis: This match-up all of a sudden looks very tempting for Nicho Hynes who will be fresh off the bye.

He bounced back to form prior to the bye with 94 against the Raiders, granted he did have a late try-assist to boost his score.

His involvement is great, but the attacking stats hadn’t been coming until that point.

Are non-owners convinced he’s not worth the $834k and are willing to avoid? 

If I was a non-owner I’d be very wary, with games upcoming against the Bunnies, Cowboys, Raiders and Dragons.

With Briton Nikora back from suspension, Siosifa Talakai drops to the bench with exciting rookie Kayal Iro holding his spot at centre.

He’ll be a buy next week if he performs well and keeps Talakai in the forwards.

Aside from Ronaldo Mulitalo who is rocking a very consistent 84 point average, there’s not a lot of interest in the Sharks elsewhere for the time being.

TIGERS v DRAGONS

Sunday, 4:05pm, Campbelltown Sports Stadium, Sydney

Analysis: Stefano Utoikamanu is finally delivering on his Supercoach potential under Benji Marshall.

Priced at just $555k, the big marn is averaging 63 points in a mammoth 58 minutes per game, with 50 in base.

He played 66 minutes against the Dolphins (aided by injuries), belting out 58 in base.

When I’m looking for a FRF I’m looking for one that has some sort of attacking upside, which leads me to the most appealing thing about Stefano.

He’s busted 20 tackles across his first four games, with a handy four offloads to boot.

With Curran now available at FRF I’m all of a sudden happy with my FRF, but for anyone looking for someone to plug in there Stefano may be the man.

After a blistering start, Api Koroisau has slowed down a bit with scores of 60 and 45.

As long as the Tigers are playing decent footy and giving Api a platform to work his brilliance off and kick goals he’ll be a hold.

Popular purchase last week Justin Olam regressed to his historical Supercoach scoring, notching just 32 points for a $59k price rise.

He now has a breakeven of 32, so if he repeats his efforts he could be a sell next week for just a $60k profit.

The Dragons match-up is great though, so owners will be desperately hoping he jags a strong score to generate further cash rises.

Analysis: The only real point of interest at the Dragons is Zac Lomax, granted, he’s very interesting!

He amassed a whopping 112 points in a well beaten team in Newcastle in horrible conditions.

In that game he had a try, try-assist, six tacklebreaks, five offloads and 22 runs.

He’s now averaging 82.6 points for the season.

He’s averaging 22.2 runs per game and 5.6 tacklebreaks per game.

He’s fast becoming this year’s version of Jamayne Isaako.

Analysis: Ethan Strange went big against the Eels with 96 points, pushing his season cash rises to $148k and leaving himself with a -25 breakeven.

He’s delivering on his cheapie potential in spades!

He looks a great play in 17s this week against the leaky Titans defence.

Matt Timoko was sensational in that fixture, scoring 124 to take his season average to 74.2 points.

He has four of five scores over 55 points and a low of 43 in round 1.

Not for me personally, but owned by just 3% of teams he’s a super POD play at $696k.

With Albert Hopoate not due back for another week, James Schiller keeps his spot on the wing and is this week’s most traded in player with an incredible breakeven of -112!!!

What this means is that if he gets sin-binned seven times in this game and plays less than 10 minutes he’ll still make a fair chunk of cash.

At $238k he’s almost impossible to ignore with a match-up against the Titans.

He’s never been Supercoach relevant in a handful of career games, scoring just 24 and 26 points in his two 80 minutes games last season.

Even if worst case he gets dropped after this week, he still nets $142k from a projected score of 51.

Xavier Savage bounced back from a poor NRL performance the week prior, scoring 90 points to leave his breakeven at -8 to generate plenty more cash for owners.

Somewhat on the chopping block a week ago, Morgan Smithies played the full 80 minutes for 69 points, including an offload! 

It was his first and possibly last offload of the season.

He based a ridiculous 65 points in that game with 39 tackles and 18 runs.

Boom rookie Chevy Stewart debuts at fullback in place of the injured Jordan Rapana and will be an exciting watch.

Analysis: The only point of interest at the Titans at the moment is David Fifita who scored 81 points in his first 80 minute game back this season.

He has a breakeven of 112 and will be very tempting to pounce on at just 1% ownership in coming weeks.

Despite being under an injury cloud, Kieran Foran has been named which is good news on the left edge for Fifita if he does in fact line-up on Sunday.
