NRL Supercoach Analysis: Round 7 Team Lists

Round 6 of NRL Supercoach proved a lot calmer than most in 2024 so far, with not too much injury carnage and no major variance in scoring across the board.

After major concerns about cheapies and cash generation early in the season, they’ve been flowing in regularly allaying fears of struggles in growing our squad value.

This now begs a new question for Supercoaches, when do we begin to focus on targeting points with our trades rather than the pure cash generation focused utilised in the early rounds?

Of course it is different for every squad, those who have missed a few key cheapies and feel they need to play catch up in squad value a little can prioritise them, while others who are confident they’ve nailed the best money-makers may look to avoid others.

Kayal Iro is the example this week with a breakeven of -76 for the Sharks.

He looks on face value a must-have with a 45 point score set to net him $100k in cash.

However, his 97 from his opening game will drop out of his rolling average this week and with Cronulla getting forwards back in coming weeks, there’s risk that Siosifa Talakai shifts back to centre in place of Iro at some stage.

So do we just chase proven guns with job security and high scoring ceilings?

It’s a tough question no doubt, but I’m leaning towards the aggressive approach and taking the guns.

The Cooma Stallions had another solid round with 1,208 points for a nice jump up to 5,937th overall.

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow’s early injured cruelled me, but he was at decent ownership and I’d had a decent run of luck in avoiding injuries the past fortnight so it was due!

I had a few less proven players with harder match-ups last week so I was very happy with the score, and Round 7 provides my squad with a tonne of very soft fixtures, so I’m excited at what lies ahead.

ROOSTERS v STORM

Thursday, 7:50pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney

Analysis: Joey Manu, my old foe, has been exceptional at fullback the last two weeks with back-to-back tonnes.

At $760k with a breakeven of 8 he is a decent buy, but buying Joey Manu at centre is entirely different to buying him at fullback.

The Roosters have upcoming games against the Storm, Dragons (ANZAC Day), Broncos and Warriors.

It’s an extremely tough draw, so while a decent buy yes, don’t expect the tonnes to continue rolling in.

Daniel Tupou went huge against the Knights with 131 points, taking his season average to 69 points with an excellent 34 in base.

At $646k with a -8 breakeven he will make good cash and is a borderline keeper, but I suspect there’s better buys.

Angus Crichton is in strong form and is one of the best Supercoach 2RFs of the best part of the last decade.

In 2022 he averaged 66 points in 75 minutes per games, 2021 he averaged 75 points and in 2020 he averaged 76 points per game.

The last two weeks he’s based 59 and 65!

At $459k with a breakeven of -21, playing 80 minutes again he looks an outstanding buy.

You could very well be getting a 2RF keeper at $459k.

Analysis: Cam Munster impressed against the Bulldogs with 96 points, with an ongoing groin niggle and Origin looming I’m not overly interested though.

Shawn Blore is another great mid-range 2RF buy at $489k with a breakeven of 0.

He played his first 80 minute game of the season for the Storm, scoring 87 points in 80 minutes with 52 in base.

Attacking stats have eluded the best hooker in Supercoach Harry Grant this season, leading to a poor 60 point average by his standards.

He’s not scored a try this season and has just one try-assist and only one try contribution.

He has one linebreak and two line-assists.

The closer we get to Origin the closer to avoiding he may be, however I’ve looked ahead and the draw for him is okay in regards to potential restings.

The Storm have the bye in two major bye rounds in round 13 and 19, and they already had one bye this season so he doesn’t actually miss any more Storm games unless rested.

In round 14 after Origin 1 they play Sunday so he has the maximum back up, after the other Origin games they play Saturday which isn’t too bad either.

I’ll be eyeing Danny Levi to a discounted Grant next week.

Eli Katoa managed just 42 points for new owners last week, while Jahrome Hughes finished with 47.

Joe Chan has been named on the bench for his first game since round 2, he has a breakeven of -10.

DRAGONS v WARRIORS

Analysis: Zac Lomax just keeps getting it done!

He’s had the most runs of any player in the competition this season.

He has four of six scores over 93 which is outstanding.

The Dragons have had a soft draw to begin the year, and with tougher games against the Warriors, Roosters and Sharks coming up it is less appealing, but with 35 base per game and goal-kicking duties he doesn’t need a lot of attack to score well.

He’s surprisingly still at just 8% ownership…

He’s been named at centre this week which is less than ideal for his scoring, however it’s likely only for one week while Jack Bird is out due to a head knock.

Not a lot of interest elsewhere, although Jaydn Su’A is ticking along nicely with a 64 point average.

Analysis: After a tough start to the season the Warriors draw begins to open up with games against the Dragons, Titans and Knights in coming weeks.

Shaun Johnson is repping a three game average of 94 points.

While the time to get him was when bottoming out a few weeks back, with the games to come he remains a decent buy and could easily be flipped to Nicho or Cleary in a few weeks.

Or he could just be a keeper?

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak interests me with that draw, he’s $713k with a breakeven of 84 with four tries in five games.

The key though is the return of Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad who is vital to Dallin’s scoring.

With such high upside on that lethal right edge he’s very tempting.

Te Maire Martin has been terrific in two games this season, averaging 85 points to sit with a breakeven of -59.

He’s dual 5/8-FLB and looms as a great cash generator with the bonus of decent scoring upside.

The timing is a bit unfortunate as we were craving this at 5/8 in the opening stages of the season!

With a Dylan Brown/Lachlan Galvin 5/8 combo I can’t fit him into my team, but others may have room.

Charnze is averaging 92 in his first two games of the season and is just $682k with 2% ownership. Super POD anyone?

Analysis: Dylan Brown bounced back to Supercoach form with 86 points against the Cowboys, hold.

Blaize Talagi returns to the side after being dropped last week, unfortunately it’s on the bench where he may play very few minutes and stunt any genuine cash growth.

He has a breakeven of 6 so there’s likely some coin incoming this week, but with a 30 in his last game if he scores poorly that cash generation could stop rapidly.

Everyone is talking about players like David Fifita, Haumole Olakau’atu and Eli Katoa as gun 2RFs, but J’maine Hopgood seems to be the forgotten man.

He’s averaging 73 points this season in just 60 minutes per game.

He has an enormous work rate, can play big minutes, offloads, bust tackles and has attacking potential making him the near perfect Supercoach package.

I would be interested, however the Eels have the bye in Round 9 then he’s every chance at Origin selection with Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Corey Horsburgh injured.

Analysis: Jack Bostock has likely peaked in price at $513k with a 54 breakeven having made owners $200k this season, well done lad!

He’s not an urgent sell at all, but he can likely be moved on over the next week or two barring a big score.

Ditto Josh Kerr who played just 21 minutes on the weekend. He made $95k but needs to be sold with a breakeven of 67 and uncertainty around his minutes each week.

When he gets even 35+ minutes he’s a beast, but they tend to fluctuate a lot.

Hammer played just 20 minutes before injuring his hamstring which will see him miss plenty of action, sell.

Trai Fuller starts at fullback in his place.

PANTHERS v TIGERS

Saturday, 3pm, Carrington Park, Bathurst

Analysis: Still no Nathan Cleary for the Panthers with a minor setback in his return from a hamstring injury.

Dylan Edwards scored 120 and 119 without Nathan Cleary.

With Cleary due back soon I’m not overly keen, but one to remember next time Cleary misses a stretch of games because Edwards grows another leg.

More so when the Panthers are full-strength and it’s not around the Origin period with major outs.

The Panthers do have a great run of games against the Tigers, Cowboys, Rabbitohs and Bulldogs over the next month, so there’s high upside across the board.

Taylan May has been named to play despite rumours he’d be left out this week due to an Instagram post incident.

Analysis: Lachlan Galvin returns from suspension at $311k with a breakeven of -43, get him in at 5/8 if you don’t already own.

With upcoming games against last year’s grand finalists in Penrith and Brisbane I can’t get overly enthused about the Tigers players at the moment.

They also don’t play the first major bye week in round 13.

Stefano Utoikamanu was a talking point and threw up a mixed bag against the Dragons.

He started with a bang with an early try, but went on to score 73 points with just 40 in base.

A great score no doubt, but owners would have been hoping for more with that try and linebreak.

He remains a solid buy, but now up to $590k he becomes less appealing.

TITANS v SEA EAGLES

Analysis: AJ Brimson remains at five-eighth where he becomes Supercoach relevant once again.

Most importantly because he’s available as a dual FLB-CTW!

Shifting from centre to 5/8 last week he scored a solid 56 points in an improved Titans performance against the Raiders.

The Titans have a tough upcoming draw against the Sea Eagles, Warriors and Storm so I won’t buy now, but he’s one to monitor.

Phillip Sami moves to fullback in place of the injured Jayden Campbell.

David Fifita played his third game of the season for his first price change, dropping $38k to $793k.

He’s averaging 70 points in 67 minutes this season, and hopefully become an 80 minute back-rower again this week.

Pick him up whenever you’re ready, even with the tough draw he can score well and is the best 2RF in the position.

Spruiked a few weeks back as a buy with the Tino injury, Jaimin Jolliffe has since dished out a three round average of 71 points.

He does have two tries in that time which has been a massive boost, but congrats to anyone who jumped on at the time.

Analysis: After a very difficult draw to start the season, Manly’s fixtures finally start to soften up.

Yes, yes I’m aware they got dusted by the Dragons…

They have upcoming games against the Titans, Eels, Raiders and Dolphins which bodes well for them.

Tommy Turbo could go huge this week and looks a prime skipper candidate, although there’s a few appealing options across the competition.

Daly Cherry-Evans has belted out back-to-back tonnes and is arguably in the form of his career, although he relinquishes the goal-kicking duties back to Reuben Garrick this week who returns from a concussion.

Despite the enormous 141 breakeven due to his third minute failed HIA against Penrith, Garrick himself is a huge POD play after a blistering start to the season at centre.

Ben Trbojevic was on the verge of putting together two 80 minute games and was scoring well, before his hammy did him in again, poor fella.

He can be cashed in for a $78k profit which could have been so much more as he’s being sold with a breakeven of 4.

Luke Brooks is well sold this week, but he just scored 49 against the Warriors in NZ and 55 against Penrith at Brookie, that’s fairly solid.

With the softer match-ups incoming I’m happy to hold and see what he can produce.

Analysis: After their tough draw to start the season, Brisbane also now enjoy a friendlier run of games against the Raiders, Tigers, Roosters, Eels.

Selwyn Cobbo is owned by just 6% of teams and has big upside.

I’m not overly keen, but we know the ability of the strike centre and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him with a few big scores leading into the Origin period.

Xavier Willison was tremendous against the Dolphins, scoring 80 points in just 41 minutes with a try, 19 tackles, four tacklebreaks and 16 runs.

He jumped $71k last week to $336k, sitting with a breakeven of -12.

When Payne Haas returns it’ll hurt his minutes, but for the time being he looks well placed to score well again.

I’m not overly keen to waste another trade on front-row, but I can’t knock anyone that wants to buy Willison because he looks brilliant.

Analysis: Last week’s most purchased player James Schiller delivered for new owners with a pair of tries, scoring 69 points for a mammoth $155k price rise.

With a -60 breakeven he could rise around $250k in two weeks!

Job security isn’t great, but you can’t doubt the man’s ability to find the line.

I will not consider playing him in my 17 this week as I think a low score is coming once those tries dry up.

Ethan Strange is the gift that keeps on giving, he’s averaging 57 points, has risen $238k and has a breakeven of -33.

If he can keep up the strong scoring he’d be an ideal hold until the first major bye round in round 13 which the Raiders play before being sold, but that may be ambitious.

I’m not overly keen to play him in my 17 against Brisbane with strong defence, but he’s not a bad final CTW or bench player if you’re short on quality.

Danny Levi’s glorious try-scoring run has come to an end which revealed his true Supercoach colours.

He played 58 minutes against the Titans for just 18 points, not good.

With a breakeven of 58 he can be sold this week or next.

I suspect Morgan Smithies is a hold until round 13 before being sold for the bye the week after, unless minutes reduce prior to that.

If he does maintain big minutes the Raiders also play Round 16, so who knows how long we’ll own for?

BULLDOGS v KNIGHTS

Sunday, 2pm, Accor Stadium, Sydney

Analysis: Sammy Hughes is the definition of a slow burn, he’s gradually getting there for owners with a $62k profit and a -13 breakeven.

Let’s hope he can get decent minutes and scoring this week to keep it flowing, because if he doesn’t that might be all the cash generation done.

He’s been named to start, but with Max King on the extended bench and two small bodies on the bench this pack could look slightly different come game day.

Josh Addo-Carr went bonkers with 162 points against the Storm in Melbourne of all match-ups!

With a -40 breakeven, there’s a quick cash grab in there if that’s what you’re after, but he’s never been overly Supercoach relevant so no interest for me.

Josh Curran is plugging that FRF hole perfectly with 64 points on the weekend in 57 minutes.

I’ll likely hold until Round 16 where they play, then sell the week after, although I wouldn’t be surprised if I held him all season barring injury with his dual positioning.

Connor Tracey retains his starting fullback role despite the return of Blake Taaffe from a concussion who does so via the bench.

Jacob Kiraz had 29 runs on the weekend, that is all…

Analysis: The Knights draws now opens up enormously with games against the Bulldogs, Dolphins, Warriors, Tigers, Titans and Bulldogs.

Kalyn Ponga is someone you’ll want to own in this run.

Big, bad, bustling Greg Marzhew was on my radar this week, but then he was shifted from the Knights lethal left edge to the right on return from injury.

It takes a lot of the appeal away as Kalyn Ponga does lots of his best work on the left edge.

That being said, Dom Young ran riot outside Dane Gagai last year, so how detrimental to his scoring will it be?

With the Knights attack being very centred around Ponga, I’ve taken a look at the 12 game stretch between Round 13 and 26 that Ponga played.

This is because Ponga started the season at five-eighth, then missed a big chunk of games due to head knocks.

In this stretch of games with Ponga at fullback and firing, Dom Young averaged 65.5 points with 10 tries.

That’s a pretty good strike-rate, then you consider Young based 23 per game last season while Marzhew based 32.

The Knights have scored just three tries down the right edge this season compared to six on the left.

Last season they scored 43% down their left and 35% down their right.

So what does this all tell us?

Marzhew can definitely still score well on the right outside Gagai, but I’d personally still much prefer him playing on the left.

I wanted to buy this week, but with a breakeven of 131 I’m thinking of waiting to see how it unfolds.

Jayden Brailey’s minutes and output are increasing and is one to monitor in coming weeks at just $311k.

SHARKS v COWBOYS

Analysis: Ronaldo Mulitalo just continues to find the tryline with another two tries against the Rabbitohs taking his season tally to six.

He’s now $749k with an average of 89 points, and with upcoming games against the Cowboys, Raiders and Dragons there’s no reason why that can’t continue.

I’m not keen to pay up that much for him as he has very low scores in him, but you can’t knock what he’s doing.

I touched on Kayal Iro up top so I won’t double up, but on face value without overthinking it he looks a great buy with a tonne of cash incoming.

Nicho Hynes could be set for a big three week period with much improved scores of 82 and 94 in recent weeks.

Analysis: With the Sharks away, into the Panthers in Townsville, it’s a fairly tough few weeks for the Cowboys incoming.

Some may be tempted to move Scott Drinkwater to Ponga or Turbo, I’ll leave that decision in your hands.

They do face the Dolphins, Titans, Rabbitohs and Tigers after that where he could average 100+, so perhaps the Spy’s famous fullback roulette could be on the cards at some stage?

With a breakeven of 89 and two tough games coming up, you can probably wait on Val Holmes, but make a plan to get him in for that softer stretch afterwards.
