Round 11 NRL Team Lists: Supercoach Analysis

Magic Round is on our doorstep, hopefully it can deliver eight games free of injury…

NRL Supercoach has been blown wide open with injuries to a stack of major stars including Nathan Cleary, Nicho Hynes, Shaun Johnson, Tom Trbojevic, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, AJ Brimson and more.

From an NRL standpoint it’s horrible to see, from a Supercoach standpoint it will hopefully continue to see diversity among teams which is always fun.

With the injury crisis after just 10 rounds, having not even reached the dreaded Origin period, I feel as though trade management is going to be as vital as ever, probably more.

Perhaps it’s just the teams I’ve seen, but I feel as though Supercoaches have gone extremely hard this season to set their teams up early.

They’ve burnt through trades early, with plenty using all five boosts, and now find themselves with three or more big name players that are immediate sells due to injury.

I’m somewhat guilty of this myself, using four boosts already and only saving a handful of trades elsewhere, but it’s not been too bad.

I think that anyone who has burned through trades will have a very nervous few months across Origin because if the injury toll to high ownership players continues it could have a devastating impact on the backend of the season.

The lesson, do your very best to save a few trades over the next month if possible.

The Cooma Stallions have a horror story from Round 10.

The plan was to save a trade which was fine up until RTS and Nicho were ruled out, along with other concerns such as Kai Pearce-Paul’s surprise benching.

Long story short, I had to use my second trade. 

Looking at breakevens and projected price changes I worked out that I could go RTS to Dom Young as my second trade, but it would mean I’d need Scott Drinkwater to go sub 95 to be able to afford Trai Fuller to Drinky this week which was my priority.

Scared that Drinky would go 100+ v the Titans and ruin my plans (he did not…) I traded RTS to Sua Faalogo instead to give breathing space.

Young was about 130 after 20 minutes and it genuinely looked like it could be a score of 250 that would ruin my season, and that of other non-owners.

Thankfully, somehow, he only ended on 160, but nonetheless it was a real dagger in the hopes of rising in rank.

I scored a solid 1,106 which was looking good up until Young and despite thinking the rank would freefall, I only dropped 38 spots to stay around 10k so I survived it okay.

We move onto Magic Round where hopefully brighter days are ahead.

Analysis: Canberra play the first major bye week in Round 13.

Unfortunately, they’re not overly Supercoach relevant with most trading out their peaked cash cows prior to last week’s bye.

Morgan Smithies is a hold until round 13, potentially round 16 for numbers pending his minutes over that period.

With stronger squads, he doesn’t necessarily need to be played each week in 17s. 

Dual 5/8-FLB Kaeo Weekes is $273k with a breakeven of -22 after a decent showing against Manly.

I’m not keen at all and don’t believe he’ll be Supercoach relevant outside of a little bit of cash generation.

Analysis: Canterbury play the first major bye week in Round 13.

Jacob Kiraz is making a compelling case to buy at $690k with a breakeven of 67 and upcoming games against the Raiders, Dragons, Knights and Eels.

With the Bulldogs playing great footy, it heightens his attacking upside significantly despite being on the weaker right edge.

He has thrown up a bit of a mixed bag this season with three tonnes and five scores under 50, with a low of 36.

He’s averaging 19 runs per game and 4 tacklebreaks. 

Over the past four weeks though he’s had run counts of 23, 18, 22 and 29, along with 13 tacklebreaks in the past two weeks.

Matt Burton is a strong replacement in the halves, averaging 69.6 for the season and 91.8 over the past five games.

The concern with his form though is that he’s getting closer to Origin selection, which if selected would see him miss round 13, 15, 16 and 19.

If he does get picked for Origin which is a strong chance he’d likely be a sell by round 13, maybe round 15, which isn’t ideal with trades already getting low for most.

Sam Hughes has peaked at $411k with a tidy $172k season profit.

I think I’ll just hold tight with him in a bit of a nothing FRF reserve spot and keep him on deck for the first two major bye rounds.

Jacob Preston could be a steal at around $450k in a few week’s time once back to 80 minutes.

Analysis: Our worst fears came to fruition with Tom Trbojevic injured against the Dolphins.

The silver lining for Supercoach only is that Tolutau Koula comes onto the radar having beaten out Reuben Garrick for the fullback spot.

This is also a major blow for Garrick owners who loses lots of appeal with Turbo out, and Cherry-Evans also to miss some action over Origin.

Priced at $470k with a breakeven of 53, Koula is a huge watch in coming weeks.

Koula shifted to fullback for the final two games of 2023 where he scored 188 and 125.

On that you’d think immediate buy, but not quite.

Those games were against cellar dwellers the Bulldogs and Dragons who were decimated by injury so they were very friendly games where Manly put on big scores in both.

With games against the Broncos, Storm, bye and Panthers I don’t think there’s any need to rush the buy as scoring will be tough, while a few bad games also would see Garrick move to fullback making Koula a waste of trades.

Haumole Olakau’atu returns from suspension, while Ben Trbojevic has kept his starting back-row spot in a big win for owners.

Analysis: Despite Origin looming, Reece Walsh looms as a great replacement for Trbojevic owners.

Walsh’s ownership among top ranked teams is soaring towards 50% off the back of 93 points against the Eels and the goal-kicking duties intact.

Brisbane have byes in round 13 and 16 which he was already missing due to Origin, so outside of any restings he looks a fine hold throughout that period.

Brendan Piakura will likely be sub $400k next week, however Brisbane’s poor bye schedule for non-Origin players makes him lack appeal for now.

Analysis: I was going to say David Fifita is in a league of his own at 2RF, but Angus Crichton is putting up a mighty compelling case to be the best 2RF in Supercoach, at least on recent scores alone.

Fifita is averaging 86.1 for the season and 102.7 in his past three games, he’s also played the full 80 in his last two.

He remains a decent buy, however the closer to Origin it gets the more he becomes an avoid.

Missing round 13, 16, 17 and 19 with potential rests and fewer minutes after Origin, I wouldn’t be buying him after this week at almost $900k.

Unfortunately, injuries to Kieran Foran and AJ Brimson makes it hard to go near any other Titans players who had just started to find some form and become Supercoach relevant.

Analysis: The Knights play round 13 and have a softer draw in coming weeks with a bye wedged in between.

They face the Titans at Suncorp, bye, then Bulldogs before games get tougher.

David Armstrong looked scintillating against the Tigers, scoring 68 points to rise $95k and sit with a breakeven of 0.

He should peak in price perfectly after Newcastle play round 13 where he can be cashed in.

Greg Marzhew has bottomed out at $515k with a breakeven of 17 and is looking back to stronger form.

He scored comfortably his highest of the season against the Tigers with 87 points, including 8 tacklebusts from 16 runs.

He busted 11 tackles the week prior in 16 runs against the Warriors.

Despite this, and a few decent games ahead, I’m not overly keen on him without Kalyn Ponga on deck to feed him quality ball, but the price is hard to ignore.

Jayden Brailey played the full 80 minutes for 51 points which was reassuring for owners.

Kai Pearce-Paul is one of the most sold players this week after playing off the bench in Tamworth.

He’s been named on the bench again this week, after playing every game this season at 80 minutes except for round 1 perhaps he is just being given a rest by Adam O’Brien.

With the round 12 bye, I’m sticking strong for round 13 then will look to sell afterwards if not starting.

Although he didn’t train with the main squad today and remains in doubt with Braydon Trindall named on the extended bench.

Analysis: Far out, where do we start with this lot?

I think you just have to own Dom Young after his 160 point performance.

I’ll rue the decision to forego him last week for the rest of the season.

Outside of his infamous send-off game for -15 points, he’s averaging 93.6 points this season.

Thanks to that game, he’s still just $684k with a breakeven of -31, and he plays the first two major bye rounds in round 13 and 16 with a fairly soft run home for the Roosters.

The one concern for him last week was playing outside of Joey ‘Glue Hands’ Manu and whether or not that limited his attacking output.

While a widely held belief, it didn’t seem to add up last week so I did a deep dive and sent a post out on Friday which revealed the following (updated with the weekend’s game):

Dom Young this season has scored six tries and had 13 linebreaks outside of Joey Manu in just six games (excluding send-off game).

Last year, Jaxson Paulo and Joseph Suaalii combined for 9 tries and 8 linebreaks in nine games outside Manu.

In summary, being outside of Joey Manu is now a very good place to be.

And I still didn’t get him in…

Manu himself is out this week due to a head knock.

Sam Walker looms as the obvious halfback replacement for the injured stars with a three round average of 102.3.

Note though he’s failed to finish two games already this season, and hasn’t always set the world alight outside of his big scores of 95 and 172.

I think he’s a good buy with limited options elsewhere, my concern is round 14 with the Roosters on the bye.

The Roosters are already very popular with players like Young, Manu, Angus Crichton and Terrell May, so you could be leaving yourself very short that week.

RABBITOHS v COWBOYS

Saturday, 7:45pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

Analysis: The upside of Latrell Mitchell will appeal to some I’m sure, but it’s a hard case to make with very little support around him at the moment at the depleted Rabbitohs.

He scored two tries and had a try-assist against the Dragons and still only scored 70 points.

The draw against the Cowboys, Eels, bye and Titans is nice, but surely there’s better options?

Alex Johnston and Jacob Gagai return from injury on the wings.

Analysis: The one major option at the Cowboys remains Scott Drinkwater who is the best Turbo replacement at fullback in my opinion.

He didn’t do much at all against the Titans in a very underwhelming display from the Cowboys, yet still got away with 59 points.

He’s bottomed out at a very affordable $713k with a breakeven of 67 and has upcoming games against the Rabbitohs, Tigers, Roosters (missing Origin players), Warriors and Raiders.

He’s averaging a very healthy 74.8 points this season.

Heilum Luki played 54 minutes on the weekend as he continues his return from injury.

At $381k, if he gets back to 65-80 minutes he’ll be a great pick-up in a few weeks for anyone willing to take on his injury history.

WARRIORS v PANTHERS

Sunday, 1:50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

Analysis: Dallin Watene-Zelezniak has been a highly regretful trade-in from the Stallions this season.

We picked the Kiwi flyer up with the Warriors running red-hot, they haven’t won a game since and he’s scored one try in that period. Ouch.

At $535k with a breakeven of 119 there’s still somehow a bit of value in the trade, so with a tough run ahead, poor bye coverage, and most importantly no Shaun Johnson feeding him, I think it’s time to cut the losses and abort mission.

Sell.

Ditto Shaun Johnson and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck who are out.

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad has been named at five-eighth which I can’t imagine would do great things for his Supercoach scoring.

Addin Fonua-Blake continues to fire, and that’s about it at the Wahs until we see a turnaround in form.

Analysis: What once loomed as a danger game for the Panthers now appears anything but based on recent form.

I’ve said for a month we need to look at Dylan Edwards in a new light when Nathan Cleary is out for longer periods as he goes to a new level.

Well, that time is now.

With Cleary out for two months, Edwards remains the key playmaker at the Panthers and becomes a very viable POD fullback buy with a season average of 91.2.

In four games without Cleary this year he’s averaged 109.75.

Alongside the $920k price tag, the issue is his potential Origin selection. 

If he misses Origin he’ll be an outstanding buy, if he gets selected he’ll not only miss those weeks, but also looms as a massive resting chance after each Origin.

Regardless, with Penrith already on the bye in round 16 and 19 he should play enough footy for the Panthers to make the trade worthwhile.

With not a lot of quality options available, don’t feel the desperate need to sell Cleary this week if you have other injuries to worry about.

Dylan Brown gets dual HFB-5/8 positional updates next week which gives us the option to also bring in a 5/8 for Cleary which opens up a few more options.

I’m not sure who I want, so I’m thinking I’ll wait a week and see how it all plays out.

STORM v EELS

Analysis: Blistering fullback Sua Fa’alogo gets his first price change this week, and while he didn’t exactly light up his first 80 minute game at fullback with just 35 points, fireworks may be around the corner.

At $339k with dual FLB-CTW positioning he remains a decent buy, but with that lower score his cash generation may be limited with Ryan Papenhuyzen due back about round 14 or 15.

Not a lot else happening at the Storm with Eli Katoa remaining a strong buy at a decent price of $692k, but not great bye coverage.

Despite the injury concern, don’t overlook Jahrome Hughes as a potential Cleary replacement in a week if you can be patient.

Analysis: Those who held Blaize Talagi would have been licking their lips watching him carve up the Broncos last weekend.

He scored 93 points to rise $40k and sit with a breakeven of -5.

To all that sold, if you can stomach buying him back I can’t push back on it, he looked great.

Despite not having his best season, Dylan Brown is still averaging a respectable 64.1 and looks the most reliable option in the halves outside of Nicho Hynes.

Shaun Lane returned to 80 minutes against the Broncos scoring 55 points.

He’s ticking along ago, without really passing the eye test.

I’ve held firm with the early bye coverage, but it’s been a tough watch at times.

A big negative on his scoring this season has been his lack of offloading. 

Injury impacted his 2023 season, but in 2022 he had 38 offloads.

This year he’d had just two offloads in eight games, then added a further two on the weekend, so hopefully this uptick can continue.

Ethan Sanders drops out in favour of Daejarn Asi, still no sign of Mitch Moses.

TIGERS v DOLPHINS

Sunday, 6:25pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

Analysis: With the lack of quality in the halves and masses of injuries, Lachlan Galvin becomes an indefinite hold for the time being.

He rescued his score on the weekend with a late try-assist.

Avoid playing him in your 17 when possible, but he has shown he can score well enough when required.

Remarkably Api Koroisau has scored 36 points in three consecutive games.

In better signs, he did play the full 80 in Tamworth at least and got through unscathed with the back issue.

He’s lost all value at just $498k, and Jayden Sullivan took over the goal-kicking duties.

Analysis: With coverage of all three major bye rounds the Dolphins are very relevant.

Jamayne Isaako couldn’t back up his round 10 heroics, scoring just 41 points against Manly.

He has an opportunity to go big against the weak edge defence of the Tigers.

There’s no pressing trades here, more just players to monitor as we get closer to round 13 such as Jeremy Marshall-King, Connelly Lemuelu and Max Plath who played just 38 minutes on the weekend.

Plath is out this week due to a head knock.
