Clem’s NRL Supercoach Captains: Round 20

2021 sixth-placed Supercoach Clementine Cassidy analyses the best NRL Supercoach captains to consider for Round 20.

And congratulations NSW!

And what a game!

I went to Suncorp on Wednesday night, and safe to say I kayaked back to the Goldie on the tears of Queenslanders, including my own.

It took me around 8 hours as I got lost a couple of times, but it was a hauntingly poetic and beautifully cathartic experience.

…and I mean, it’s nice to keep things interesting. To quote Betoota’s finest, the great Clancy Overell:

Billy knows what he’s doing…because we’ve got them right where we want them for 2025.

And I must give a shoutout and a huge thank you to an absolute legend of a SuperCoach player and OG Playbook connoisseur, Paul, who saw my story on Insta that I was in the Goldie for work this week, had a couple of spare tickets, and got me to the game!

What an absolute legend of a bloke! How good is the SuperCoach community!

Now, last week we got a couple of the Captains right which was quite nice for us, and that was of course, Garrick and also, our take a risk Captain Turbo.

But if you dig around in that article hard enough, you’ll notice a dubious mention of a Captaincy on Mulitalo and if you read between the lines and squint your eyes a bit, there may also be a mention of a JGagai in there too…

We’re clutching at straws here, but with our track record, we’ll take them as wins…

So without further ado, let’s congratulate NSW one more time, and move on to the Captains. And we’ll start with your VCs:

Cody Walker

Cody vs the Tigers, who were annihilated by the Sharks last week (upsetting the natural order of things by proving that a Shark could beat a Tiger on dry land), is an obvious choice at VC if you own.

80 points last week and a 3-round average of 67. As long as he keeps his toys in the cot which he managed last week to mine and every other owner’s great relief, he could replicate that ton Trindall produced last week.

Death, taxes, and Cody to JGagai.

Storm vs Roosters

It’s always hard when our Captains all play each other, but there’s a bunch of VC’s or even Captains in this game at AAMI Park on Saturday night so let’s look at a couple of the big players:

The Roosters are back and the cry of elated relief coming from my Chook-heavy team can be heard across the land.

Teddy – Is there a safer Captain in SuperCoach 2024 than James Tedesco? I think not. So, if you own, you have to consider the Captaincy on him or at least the Vice Captaincy.

A 3-round average of 116, the top scorer so far for SuperCoach 2024 and scoring points just for fun, vintage Teddy is a must own in any SuperCoach team.

Jahrome Hughes – Also coming fresh off the bye we have Hughes, who boasts a 3-round average of 90, about a thousand try-assists (death, taxes, and Hughes to EKatoa is also a thing), and has shaped up to be a must-have HB of the SC2024 season. Playing at home, consider that VC if you don’t own Cleary.

Cleary

He’s back! He’s FINALLY back!

And with a BE of 189, are you buying or are you waiting and watching?

If you’re bringing him in, you face the tough decision of whether or not you Captain him vs the Dolphins in Penrith on a Saturday arvo?

I would 100% take the risk if I owned, even after looking at his 5 games this season which only boast one ton and an average of 62.

I’m going to watch and wait on bringing him in though, so if we go by that, you can safely assume that he’s going to score a double ton, make his BE, and get the keys to the city. So yeah. Captain with confidence.

Or Vice Captain if you own this next man:

Tommy T

It’s. Just. So. Beautiful!

And how stunning was it to see Tommy T ton up last Sunday arvo at Brookie. It’s surely one of the most glorious sights in rugba league.

119 points. A try and two assists. Stunning, glorious times.

And now Manly are playing the Titans on Sunday arvo at Brookie, and like some glorious Groundhog Day, owners will be hoping he soars up that field like the beautiful Sea Eagle he is and replicates last Sunday’s performance to score a ton again.

Of course, you may consider Jayden Campbell or Garrick in this game too – both scoring tons for fun last week and putting on absolute performances that demand we at least consider them for the Captaincy armband.

Jayden Campbell knocking out a casual 111 including 3 try-assists now boasts a 3-round average of 119. While Garrick also managed to knock out a casual ton in just 63 minutes.

Now let’s move on to the one who has been wildly celebrating like a true King since 10pm Wednesday night wrapped in his blanket, possibly in his Peter Alexander robe and Kmart uggs, surrounded by copious amounts of chicken wings, doughnuts, and whiskey:

Spy’s Captains

And you know when you get 10 short voice notes from the man, one after the other in the space of about 30 seconds that he means business, so let’s get straight into it:

“Blues, unbelievable scenes.

“Best night ever. If not, close.

“Coke. Doughnuts. Whiskey. Chicken Wings. Could it get any better.

“No uggies or robe required. Good conditions.

“Blanket alternative.

“I actually crashed from 10.30 onwards following all the nerves and excitement.

“VC Cody Walker.

“Captain Cleary if you’re buying.

“Teddy an obvious choice. But you never know against Melbourne. So you could go against him if you want to swing for the fences a bit.

“I reckon that’s all I’ve got this week.”

Verdict

There’s a few great options for Captains and Vice Captains this week. Some of us will have a free loop which is quite nice so have a little look at that. And at Round 20, with only a handful of rounds to go – is this the week you take that big risk?

At 5am on this Friday morning, I have absolutely no clue who I’m going to Captain yet, but it will be likely be a VC on Cody Walker and possibly a Captaincy on that vintage legend, James Tedesco. But if you own Cleary or Tommy T, you’ve got a harder choice than me.

And on that note, it’s a stunning morning here on the Goldie and I’m off to the beach…

I hope you have a beautiful weekend full of tons and good Captain choices.
