Undervalued SC BBL players: Rain fixtures hiding true stats

We remove last year's rain impacted fixtures to determine the true value of Supercoach BBL14 prospects.

BBL

In Supercoach, player prices are a topic that could be delved into with great detail, using a wealth of numbers and formulas (the phrase magic number springs to mind).

While I don’t have the exact science or complex equations behind it, I know there are plenty of brilliant minds out there who definitely do.

Instead, I’ll take a simpler approach and say that, for the most part (apart from a few examples), a player’s starting price is based on their average Supercoach points from the previous BBL season.

Supercoach, and fantasy sports in general, are all about finding value — identifying players who can outperform their initial price or starting salary.

In this article, I’ll focus on games with limited play (rain or even dangerous pitches!), which are especially important.

These are the games that will contribute to a player’s average at the end of the season.

It’s important to note that games where no ball is bowled, or those that are deemed “washed out,” do not count towards a player’s average.

Rain effected examples

Example 1: Jhye Richardson

Granted, Richardson is not the best example as he is someone who is not priced around players purely on price from last season due to his pedigree that saw an increase on what his value should have been.

SC scores of 57, 8, 41, 21, 0 (the shortened match against Renegades), 36, 74 and 7.

244 points from 8 matches giving an average of 30.5 SC points

Without that game it would be an average of 34.9.

As mentioned above he is not someone who is the best example but I thought it was interesting to include him as a non-example.

Example 2: Matt Short.

He had a wash out in the first game and this does not affect his average.

SC scores of 66, 88, 10 (he is human!), 92, 109, 155, 111, 159, 137.

927 points from 9 full matches for a whopping average of 103 SC points

No games (weather or what not) that are affecting his total average from last year.

It kind of makes sense why he is priced the way he is (not withstanding he is an absolute gun!!)

Example 3: Kane Richardson

K.Richo is a prime example of someone who may have extreme value in his initial starting price.

SC scores of 26, 38, 3 (the shortened match against the Stars), 84, 0 (the shortened match against the Scorchers), 55, 26

232 total points from 7 matches giving an average of 33.1 SC points.

Without the two affected games he would be 229 points from 5 matches giving an average of 45.8 SC and thus he would have a higher starting price.

Game 4 Scorchers vs Renegades

Highly important match for our starting squads this year with teams involved with early doubles to factor in.

Only 6.5 overs were bowled where the Scorchers were batting and obviously the Renegades bowling.

– No overs for any Scorchers bowlers. 0 SC points scored by Richardson, Tye and Behrendorff.

– Inglis only scored 3 not out. Hardie did reach 20 runs, but not quick enough to activate a strike rate bonus.

– No time at the crease for Ashton Turner.

– No Renegades bowlers activated the economy bonus by bowling 3 overs. Rogers and Sutherland did pick up a wicket each in limited overs.

– No overs for Kane Richardson. Zampa was rested for the game so this doesn’t impact his overall average.

Game 17 Hurricanes vs Stars (27 overs)

The game got through the first innings without any rain interruptions but the second dig was heavily interrupted with the Stars only batting for 7 overs and Hurricanes only bowling for the 7 overs.

– Only 2 overs for Meredith and Ellis (no economy bonus) and both bowled well! Their scores are much lower in this reduced match compared to what they probably should have been.

– Only 1 expensive over for Chris Jordan. An off night with the bat too meant he only registered 12 SC points for the match.

– Even in a heavily reduced match we saw the power of Maxy. No discount or low price here. 35 not out off just 18 balls opening the batting. 3/29 off his 4 overs and a catch mixed in for good measure. A mammoth 150 SC points.

– 0 SC points for Beau Webster. That’s not a typo and it shows how much of a rollercoaster the allrounder role is for him in the Stars line up. This 0 is sandwiched between a 217 and 153 interestingly enough. He had one expensive, wicketless over (0/16) and he was shuffled down the order from this customary number 3 role and did not get a bat this game.

– Stoinis too with a very low score. Just 12 SC points for Stoinis with 0/14 off 1 over and a duck batting at number 3. Most of his points came from a catch in the field.

Game 19 Thunder vs Sixers (24 overs) Sixers batting and Thunder bowling

– Only 4 overs in the second innings of this match. Meaning very low scores for Sixers batters and Thunder bowlers.

– Notable low involvements for the match include no batting opportunities for Jack Edwards, missing out on perhaps a monster score after taking 3/24 in the first innings. A low score of 11 runs for Josh Philippe. No overs bowled by Daniel Sams, although he did make 30 off 25 in the first innings.

– I believe this was a part of a double game round for the Thunder.

Game 23 Renegades vs Stars (26 overs) even for both

– 14 overs for the Renegades and 12 overs for the Stars. Some very sneaky and revealing scores here that influence players average for the whole season.

– The Stars used 7 bowlers and only Maxy and Imad Wasim (not here this year) took 3 overs to register the economy bonus. Steketee (1/12 off 2) and Webster were very tidy (1/4 off 1) but have lower scores than they probably would have in a regular match.

– No time at the crease for Stoinis or Hilton Cartwright.

– Maxy like last time in a rain reduced game was awesome producing 1/8 off 3 overs, 2 catches in the field and 32 off just 15 balls with the bat. I am sensing a trend with Maxy in rain reduced games….

– Kane Richardson only jad the two overs (0/16) and thus no economy bonus. Just 3 SC points for the match.

– 3 overs for Rogers (1/21) and Zampa (0/27).  Interestingly enough Zampa was too expensive to access the economy run rate bonus.

– I believe this was a part of a double game round for the Stars

Game 24 Sixers vs Heat (34 overs) Sixers bowling and Heat batting

– Even though he is on a new team this year, the match helps us with the price for Tom Curran for the Stars. He only bowled 2 overs (0/19) and didn’t fire with the bat. Only 6 SC points!

– 2 very tidy overs for Ben Dwarshuis (1/7) and 13 not out off just 6 balls. Only 36 SC points in a game where he would have probably gone higher if bowling his full allotment of overs.

Hopefully this article can uncover some underpriced gems for you.
