Cheapie rankings: Bargain priced allrounders for BBL14

We rank the biggest bargain buys in the allrounder position to set your team up for Big Bash 14.

BBL

We’ve already told you about the value of a cheapie. And when it comes to BBL SuperCoach, no Cheapies are more valuable than a good allrounder.

A great allrounder increases your scoring involvements – the more times your player is in the game with bat or ball, the more chances they have to score points. So this list is like a cheapie in itself – super valuable!

Here’s our take on the best undervalued DPP eligible players which could help make a difference in your side this season.

For context we look at cheapies as those players under $80k. There’s always a bunch of players on the bubble so scroll down the very bottom to see our thoughts on those players.

Cheaper allrounders combine both batting and bowling allrounders. Any player who regularly bats and bowls is going to do well in SuperCoach, but for consistency we love allrounders who will bowl at least three overs.

Cheapie Allrounders

Will Salzmann, $39.5k, Sydney Thunder

Role: Poor
Job security: poor

A player with star power, this year is likely to be another one of develop for the young bowling allrounder.

Salzmann has being playing as a batter only in Grade cricket, and is mostly on this list given his value as a NPR for looping purposes.

James Bazely, $58.5k, Adelaide Strikers

Role: good
Job security: poor

The native Queenslander has shown glimpses of being a great SuperCoach prospect, but appears to have fallen down the pecking order in Adelaide.

Bazely looks to be competing for the final spot in the Strikers lineup with cheapie bowlers Jordan Buckingham and Brendan Doggett.

If he does get the role he’s a decent Round 1 stash, albeit his job security isn’t great with those two players looming.

Mitch Owen, $58.5k, Hobart Hurricanes

Role: good
Job security: poor

Owen has been around for a few seasons yet and not really shown much to suggest he deserves regular game time.

But with new recruit Shai Hope not arriving until Round 3, there’s a chance for someone to bat in the top order for the Hurricanes in the short term.

Owen has performed that role for Tasmania in white ball cricket this season, so it’s not a stretch to suggest he might get first dibs.

It’s a high risk, high reward role where a quickfire 20 could get the cash rises coming.

Unfortunately the ‘Canes play the final game of Round 1 so we won’t know for certain if he gets the gig or not until very late in the piece.

Matthew Spoors, $58.5k, Perth Scorchers

Role: Good
Job security: poor

Spoors is the like for like replacement for Ashton Agar in the Scorchers squad, so his appearance in the lineup will literally comedown to the fitness of his teammate.

Having started his career as a batsman, he has some claims to being a genuine allrounder and thus a decent SuperCoach prospect. But with Agar’s return from a shoulder injury looming, it’s a risk to start with Spoors who could be dropped suddenly.

Jack Wood, $58.5k, Brisbane Heat

Role: Good
Job security: mixed

Brisbane have three squad members playing Test cricket and a spot is now open at the top of the order. There’s a bunch of different ways they could fill the void, but one of them could be allrounder Jack Wood.

Having debut as a spin bowler, Wood has reinvented himself as a hard hitting batsman whose toured the Aussie T20 circuit.

Keep on eye on the Heat side from Round 1 as if named, the job security for Wood could actually be quite good.

Bubble boys:

Marcus Stoinis, $84.2k, Melbourne Stars

Role: good to great
Job security: Excellent

The thing Big Papi has over everyone on this list is job security. Plus his form is worth acknowledging too.

We won’t know if he will bowl, and the Stars are never short of options. But with the Stars good draw he should be in almost every side.

Hayden Kerr, $105k, Sydney Sixers

Role: good
Job security: mixed

Kerr was once a prospect in this article. Since his breakout year he has unfortunately dealt with a lot of injuries.

At his pomp, he’s a must have SuperCoach player. But despite the appeal of his price it is worth waiting to see his role ahead of their Round 3 double.
