Thommo Aitken
2019 SuperCoach BBL overall champion
Former Supercoach Big Bash champion Thommo Aitken looks at the good, bad and ugly from the recent round of the BBL.
BBLWelcome to our review article at SC Playbook where we review the action from the previous round and see what impact it had on our side and what we can learn from it.
It was meant to be a Thunder double game round.
The weather had other ideas as it was a single game for all teams except Adelaide (bye) and Hobart (rain) who both didn’t get on the field this round.
Similar to round 5, ranking rises were in store for those that were able to get many decent players on field. Thunder faders were rewarded, as were Chief captainers!

Embed from Getty ImagesResult: Heat won by 5 wickets
Takes:
*Mass changes for both sides. 3 changes for the Heat as they look to make a charge towards the finals. Out were Tall Paul, Banton and Prestwidge. Ins were Wood, Alsop and Neser. For the Thunder out were Bancroft, Sams and Nikitaras. The ins were Davies, Weibgen and Daniel Christian. Yes, that’s right 41-year-old DC.
*And in true BBL style DC was one of the best players for the Thunder. Batting at 8 he made 23 not out off 15 deliveries and then bowled all 4 overs for the Thunder for a tidy 1/25. 83 SC points in an all rounder role. Those who traded him in for hist first game will be happy. Cheap as chips and solid role, depending on how long he is in the side he presents as a trade in option.
*Warner continued on his fine form opening the batting making 50 off 36 balls.
*Davies moved up the open but was unable to capitalise.
*Gilkes just reached the magical 20 run mark in quick time to activate the strike rate bonus coming in at number 3.
*5 bowlers used for the Heat. SJ was expensive but did picked up 3 wickets which would please owners. With Neser back he did not bowl in the powerplay.
*Bartlett kept bowling his usual overs (opening, surge and death) and picked up 1/39.
*Neser bowled 4 overs including the first and the last. He was tidy picking up 2/25 off his allotment of overs. He also came in at 7 and hit the winning runs. A trade in option, especially with the omission of Paul Walter.
*Kuhnemann picked up multiple wickets for the first time this tournament.
*The Brisbane Heat innings was a tale of two halves. They struggled early on as Wood, Munro and McSweeney struggled to fire. The Thunder bowlers (bar Agar) were fairly economical. Then the Heat took the power surge, got momentum into their innings when they needed 2 runs per ball for the entire back half and remarkably in the end, won the match easily.
*Bryant was sensational. He has found his niche as a middle order batter who can accelerate the run rate. 72 off 35 deliveries in a match winning partnership with Renshaw who made 48 not out off 33 balls.
*Ferguson was the pick of the bowlers 2/21 and some fielding points too. Even if they don’t get on the field in game 2 he was rewarded owners. Only downside is that he is leaving and is an immediate trade out.
*Highly, highly owned Thunder bowlers Agar and Green scored very low. Agar was lucky to pick up a very late wicket.

Takes:
*Two changes for the Renegades. In were Marcus Harris and Richo. Out were Brown and Crone. 3 changes for Perth. Big ins of Mitch Marsh, Richo and Agar. Outs were Hurst, Tye and Spoors with Allen taking the gloves.
*Will Sutherland. 166 SC points. Unbelievable!
*Overshadowed by Chief but also someone who made runs and took wickets, Tom Rogers 119 SC points. Very impressive!
*Zampa’s finest outing too! 3 wickets for 87 SC points.
*2 wickets each for Dorf, Richo and the Wild Thing (Morris).
*Agar showing he probably should be listed as BAT/BWL in the SC game and not just BWL. 51 not out off just 30 deliveries.
*No overs for Hardie, he did open the batting, but still looked a tad rusty at home where he usually performs very well with the bat.
*A rare down game from Cooper. Out were for a duck and only 1 over for him.
*Another allrounder with a down game that had similar statistics to Cooper was Bethell. Only 1 overs and limited runs with the bat.
*A prediction to finish JFM will be the most owned player next year at bargain basement price. A duck for him this game, batting at number 3.

Takes:
*None!
Embed from Getty ImagesResult: Stars won by 5 wickets
Takes:
*In Webster and out Rogers for the Stars. For the Sixers, in Abbott and out Bird.
*Maxy top scored with 113 SC points. He still was batting at 6 and was not bowling overs so it is not a great SC role. It just demonstrates how explosive he can be with bat in hand!
*Steketee the pick of the bowler with 3/14 off his 3 overs. In promising news for owners Stoinis bowled 4 overs (including a power surge over) and took 2/30.
*Webster returning with what looks like a favourable SC role. Bowling 3 overs and batting that anchor role at number 3.
*Vince continues to score runs against the Stars. 53 off 44 balls.
*Edwards continues to have that solid SC role, bowling 4 overs and batting at number 6. He hasn’t put up a massive batting score at number 6, but I think we see a quick 20 at some stage.
*Abbott returning with a bang. 3/29 off his 4 overs to top score SC wise for the Sixers.
*Kerr with a sneaky 80 SC points. He could be worth a cheeky look to see how his role looks with some Sixers players leaving after this round.
*Hosein could be cheap if he plays BBL next year.
