On this week's Spy Talk, NRL Supercoach expert SC Spy discusses the importance of squad balance and his Round 7 strategy.
NRLG’day team,
I’m writing today live from enemy territory just over the QLD border in Redcliffe.
Before I pop down to Dolphins captains run to see what Herbie actually looks like in real life & get into some pre Magic Round recon.
I’m taking the opportunity to write about squad balance and mainly who do we upgrade first.
The reason I thought to specifically talk about this today is because I really wanted to trade in Cam Munster last week but upon making my trades I realised the following 5 guys would be on my bench in coming weeks:
That’s mean I would have had to leave out 1 of the above 5 which is certainly not ideal at this time of year and I’d have to maybe even leave 2 out if I wanted to VC loop.
So rather then upgrade Harris-Tavita to Munster I saved the money and now will be able to focus on the weaker parts of my squad who I am forced to play in my 18 every week.
For you, this might be hooker, for me it’s a chance to concentrate on upgrading my centres.
Essentially I want to be able to ensure I have my strongest possible top 14 guys available each week on field and then the bench/reserves can come after that.
It’s all good bringing in another gun on the bench but if you can’t play him and you are forced to play an inconsistent centre then your points will suffer.
So strengthen the starting squad and you can then look to add depth on the bench from there.
For example, if I had traded in Munster last week I would have had to not play him (or Horsburgh) and be actively playing a Robert Toia in my centres.
Instead I have Harris-Tavita at backup 5-8 still as a non player, Toia‘s spot is now taken by Jacob Kiraz and my 4 man bench remains super strong.
This is an example of balance so take a look at how your trades impact your own squad and which positions you need to be upgrading right now.
I’m excited to spend my hard earned dollars and my trades at the moment are as follows:
Tuipulotu will sit on the bench for a week then upgrade to another gun unless I look to downgrade him now to a Hiroti or similar.
Unfortunately I am just shy of a triple upgrade at this stage.
Unless I can work some late magic!
VC I am thinking Ryan Papenhuyzen into Terrell May because the Tigers will be ultra fired up and will be desperate for a win after the week that has been.
A free look at Papi is always happy days.
Good luck all,
Spy
