Supercoach EPL: Everything You Need to Know

Former Supercoach overall runner-up and Newcastle tragic, Steve Nikolovski runs through everything you need to know ahead of the first ever Supercoach EPL season.

EPL

Supercoach EPL, you say, sure, why not!

As a tragic Newcastle United and English Premier League fan, I was very excited when I saw this pop up on the Supercoach app.

Word of warning for those who play FPL (surely that’s everybody right?), this is a very different game, plus you’re way more likely to win something as there won’t be millions of players.

Differences between FPL and Supercoach EPL

You can play a 2-5-3 formation!  I was initially excited too, but more on why I’m not anymore later.

There’s a maximum of one auto sub per line, and you get your lowest-scoring player sub in on that particular line.

You don’t get to choose which you want.

Depending on your formation, you may not even have a sub.

So, if you plan on playing 3 up front, you won’t have an emergency if one doesn’t start.

Or if you play a 2-5-3 as mentioned above, you won’t have a single mid or fwd bench option, so it comes with plenty of risk.

This will especially come into play when teams have European competitions mid-week and start resting players for weekend EPL matches.

The biggest one for me is that you only get 44 trades, no chips, with a maximum of 2 trades per week unless you’re boosting.

You can boost up to 6 times, but they come out of your 44 tally for the season.

44 trades in 38 gameweeks IS NOT MUCH!

I can’t stress this enough – be a savvy trader and opt for nailed starters as much as possible, i.e. Virgil van Dijk from Liverpool and limit players who have tournaments such as the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The same general supercoach rules apply, such as rolling lockout, trade updates, VC and C, trade assist and optimiser options, which makes this game unique.

As does the scoring system, which I’ll dive into next.

All final points are awarded in whole numbers on a ‘per stat’ basis. Eg. a minimum of 3 clearances must be recorded by a player (0.6) for 1 point to be awarded.

The things that stand out to me are the following:

  • Keepers and defenders lose 2pts for every goal conceded after their first.
  • This makes defenders from the lower-ranked teams uninspiring options.
  • You gain a point per shot on target across the board
  • You lose 4 points for a penalty conceded, irrespective of whether it’s converted or not.

There’s also a whole raft of points available for actions during the match and these are rounded up to the nearest whole point.

For example: 3 clearances will get you a point even though it’s only worth 0.6pts in the point system.

I can’t find this officially, but I’m led to believe points are not locked in until after the match concludes; therefore, if your defender is subbed out with a clean sheet intact and the team concedes afterwards, your player will lose points those clean sheet points.

Conclusion

So there you have it, a little guide to help you set up your first team for Supercoach EPL.

Obviously, being a new game, there will be plenty of learnings, myself included.

I expect it to be challenging with such limited trades, and for those who set up their team well and follow it closely, you’ll be in a strong position as plenty will lose interest after blowing trades early.

It’s a marathon in FPL, but it feels like a half-marathon compared to this game.

Next time, I’ll reveal my starting team.

You have until 5am on the 16th of August to get your team set, the kick-off time for Liverpool v Bournemouth, which will be a highly emotional affair with Diogo Jota’s passing in the off-season.
