Clem’s Captains: Round 26 NRL SuperCoach Skippers

Former sixth-placed finisher Clementine Cassidy analyses the best captaincy candidates for NRL Supercoach Round 26

NRL

I just spent 15 minutes on the phone with Spy explaining popular culture, diss tracks, Kendrick Lamar’s iconic Super Bowl performance, flared jeans, Serena’s crip walk, and why my rap didn’t rhyme.

I take it all back – we must protect this innocent man at all costs.

I truly hope Royce Hunt comes out and scores twice in his 10 minutes for you Spy.

Let’s just go on a little tangency wander from Captaincy’s for a minute (unusual from me, I know):

After turning up for work on Tuesday, accidentally channelling my inner Kendrick Lamar in a pair of flares and a white and blue jacket (I am NEVER wearing flares again) – me and my friend Nathan, (aka the Dragons biggest supporter), decided to do an office photoshoot as you do, whereby I modelled my stance on Kendrick’s iconic moment when he looked straight into the camera, mic in hand, and delivered his Drake diss.

And after listening to Spy on Tuesday’s poddy reveal he has no trades, a decimated team, and a loop on Tuki Simpkins – I made a Kendrick-inspired diss-track to go with my photo:

Say, Spy, I heard you got no trades.

Tuesday teams were full of them grenades.

Tuki Simpks might come down from the clouds above.

Just make sure you take your loop from him.

And I was expecting a rebuttal, something, but I got exactly nothing back because apparently it all went over his head.

So now that I have spent the last 15 minutes educating him, I have set him the important task to watch the Super Bowl performance and deliver…

And it was Total Team Decimation for some when Tuesday’s team list came out – Storm restings, injuries, and the pièce de résistance – the entire Panthers team given an extra bye round vs the Bulldogs, who will now play the baby Panthers (cubs?) in tonight’s great David and Goliath matchup.

Somehow, I got lucky and have 20 players – and the gap between me and Spy has closed to 727 points – mathematically speaking – there’s a chance… We’re not quitters over here at the Friday Beers!

And what about the scores last week!

Topped by some vintage Tommy T, it was raining tons!

I scored a 1488, with over half those points coming in the form of my Sunday Saviours, led by my ultimate Lord and Saviour, Captain Reece Walsh

And somehow, I’m in six H2H grand finals and one is against my baby brother in the mighty Wahrarapa Bush league featuring a bunch of Kiwis from that bush footy heartland of the Wairarapa – and it is my sole goal in life to beat him and claim my rightful place as the sibling at the top of the food chain.

Last week he traded in Doueihi and Sammy Walker – my absolute condolences, Luke, I am crying inside for you…

Now watch the kid beat me hahaha.

But without further ado, let’s get on with the Captains and lets also keep in mind that with H2H finals on, there’s lots of clever trickery you can play with your VC and Captains, and I will say – if you have a player who could go big and your opponent doesn’t have them – chuck the VC on them and give it a crack!

And let’s start with tonight’s game, aka: The Thursday Thrashing, where we now have some likely VCs in the form of the Bulldogs, including:

Jacob Kiraz

A round 25 score of 90, an average of 77, and 5 tries in his last 6 games. All of this topped off with the cherry presented on a platter by Ivan Cleary himself – 17 Panthers cubs to run amuck against.

He is a likely VC if ever I saw one – surely there’s a couple of meaties on his Thursday night horizon – even if he gets a rest because it’s 100-nil, he’ll probably be on 150 at half time.

Definitely one to consider, especially if your H2H opponent doesn’t own him.

At the time of writing, 30% of the top 10% firmly have the VC on him with a handful of absolute risk-takers (or are they?) locking him in for some straight Thursday night Captaincy.

(I’m not that brave – if there’s a chance I can close the gap more on the Spy, there’s a chance the baby Panthers can make this trickier than it seems).

The Raiders

And what about the last few seconds of last Friday’s game vs the Panthers. Pure. Cinema!

If you own any of the Raiders who’ve been whacking out some scores of late – there are some tantalising options who could go large on Saturday arvo at home for your VC.

They’re playing the Tigers, who somehow let the Leichardt win slip out of their grasp in the second half vs the Cowboys when Scotty D said ‘haha I was only joking’ to the 50,000 SuperCoachers poking him with a stick saying ‘do something!’ and decided to whack out a tidy ton in the space of what felt like 10 minutes.

Strange has gone bang, bang – with a back-to-back 127 and a 114, including FOUR tries.

Everything happens in threes… so if you own him, a VC could soar you up the rankings or win you H2H glory.

Timoko hasn’t been shy of a ton or a try in his last four games either – scoring two back-to-back doubles in his last four games.

A cheeky VC on Huddy Young who knows how to rack up a score and find the tryline, could also be an option though not my fave.

I owned Weekes in the wrong order – starting with him and then trading him out with a bunch of 30s to his name.

Well, he’s proven he’s got tons in him, and with Scotty D scoring 106 in the second half vs the Tigers last week – does Weekes score his 5th ton of the season and make someone a happy VCer?

Now let’s move on to the Captains:

Tommy T

And what do we need to say here except last Saturday we got treated to Vintage Turbo

2 tries, 2 try-assists, 2 line-breaks, 4 line-break assists, ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY POINTS! The highest score in SuperCoach 2025. So far.

And if you VC’d or Captained, let us all pause and give you a round of applause. Because wow.

Talk about the haves and have nots between a Tommy T Captaincy and a Teddy Captaincy last Saturday!

And they are playing the Dragons, who had FORTY unanswered points put on them last Thursday night by the BUNNIES. FORTY!

And even though you would expect the Dragons will come back swinging after a pantsing like that – Tommy T remains an extremely excellent VC or Captain if you are lucky enough to own… especially, as there’s still a mathematical chance that Manly make the eight…

Disclaimer* I remember this game v the Dragons last year, where I claimed Tommy T was the Captain of the Round, and then whatever devil curse hoodoo has been put on Manly playing the Dragons overpowered my crystalling and Tommy T scored a measly 55 points sodon’t say I didn’t warn you…

Obviously, there are other VC options here in the form of Hopoate who whacked out a 160 with ease last week, and Koula who also casually scored a ton.

Reece Walsh

We rode that Reece Walsh rollercoaster for the second week in a row, and honestly, I’m considering getting back in line to go again, because it is just SO fun!

He is now officially the number one fullback in SuperCoach 2025.

Back-to-back scores of 155 and 147, a 5-round average of 105 points, kicking… he doesn’t even need to score his own tries anymore – he’s got so many points he just hands them over to his teammates to score instead…

He clearly did not Captain himself…

And you’d think, vs the Cowboys, who have let fullbacks run amuck against them in the last few weeks and have the defence of a plastic sheet – he should go big again.

Just keep in mind that he doesn’t average hugely against the Cowboys in normal times and the game is up in Townsville – so that makes him a VC for me instead.

Will I ride the Reece Walsh rollercoaster one more time?

Potentially – my VC is between him and Kiraz.

Nicho Hynes

And the main reason I’m not Captaining Walsh is because on a sunny Sunday at Shark Park, we have our official Captain of the Round.

Prince Nicho Hynes, he of the glorious wet locks and the 3-round average of 100, is playing the Knights, who coincidentally have conceded three 100-point scores to halfbacks in the last month.

And they are not well, those poor Knights.

Thrashed by the Broncos 12 – 46 last week, the Cowboys 38 – 4 the week before.

Lost their coach this week.

Meanwhile, Nichos is fresh off a bye and 145 points vs the Gold Coast the week before – a couple of tries, a couple of try-assists – and the Sharks, well, they still have a 26% chance of a top four finish…

All this mathematically adds up to the Sharks feasting on the Knights, and Nicho’s hair being very very wet (possibly with hair gel though as The Great Rains of Sydney have officially stopped and it’s supposed to be sun).

Jayden Campbell

And this brings us to the final hurrah! In the form of Jayden Campbell.

And if you don’t own any of the popular fullbacks, or you want to have a last-minute Hail Mary to win your H2H, Jayden could be your guy.

And while he hasn’t exactly racked up the points in his last three games – if we cast our mind back to the two rounds before that – he scored a couple of back-to-back tons.

Playing the Dolphins at Suncorp on a Sunday arvo, who have let some absolute POINTS be scored against them, including (according to my faithful source – the SuperCoach App – 80 points on average to the last four right playmakers) – you’d think the Titans would be up for this.

Especially as they’re in a race vs the Knights to not be crowned this year’s Wooden Spoon.

Potentially your POD Captain Sunday Saviour.

Verdict

I firmly have the Captaincy on Nicho, however, I am in my usual Thursday battle over who to VC – Kiraz or jump back on the Reece Walsh Rollercoaster – which would require some VC loop trickery on my behalf if he tears the Cowboys to shreds.

So now I’m going to go for a nice walk in the sun while I ponder my decision and wait and wait and wait for Spy’s rebuttal…

(tbh his rebuttal will probably be Tuki Simpkins coming in as a late in and scoring 60, not being able to loop Nicho, but taking the POD Jayden Captaincy, and netting a triple ton of Captaincy points…)

It’s Murphy’s Law.

And on that note, I hope you win all your H2Hs and you soar up those Overall ranks, and you have a beautiful weekend.

Clementine xx
