NBA Supercoach | Cheapie Analysis

NBA and Supercoach expert Oscar Henderson gives his full cheapie analysis, outlining his favourite affordable options for your starting sides

NBA

NBA opening night is just around the corner which means it is time for us to lock in our Supercoach starting squads.

The salary we have been given to work with is quite tight, and in order to afford some of these premium options we are going to have to stack our team with cheapies.

For the purpose of this article, I am classifying any player under $8 million as a cheapie.

Unfortunately, a lot of these players are still surrounded by uncertainty, whether it is to do with their role or minutes.

Therefore, it is still a bit of a guessing game, but don’t worry, these are as educated as educated guesses can get.

Slam dunk options

These are my favourite cheapies that I think offer the best value.

The guys who I have confidence in to generate cash, score well and would be happy starting in my side on any given week.

Cooper Flagg SF/PF (DAL) $5m

I have wrote my thoughts about him in plent of my articles, but to summarise, just get him in.

He is an incredible talent and will have as much opportunity as anyone at this price point.

So much value and potential upside.

Matas Buzelis SF/PF (CHI) $6.67m

I am a Chicago fan, and I could genuinely see Buzelis leading our team in scoring this year.

Yes, this is obviously very optimistic, but I am a believer in his talent and the 30+ minutes he should see nightly.

A rough schedule to start the season may steer me away from him at first, but will definitley want him in my side ASAP.

Solid options

I like these options and definitely see value in these picks.

I wouldn’t say they are confident starts, but they are somewhat comfortable plays in my starting side (especially with the flex position allowing your lowest score each week to drop out).

Zaccharie Risacher SF/PF (ATL) $7.87m

We managed to see flashes of brilliance from the number one pick in his rookie season, although he is yet to really take-off.

He averaged 24 minutes a night last year, and this should jump up to around 30 minutes a night.

There is plenty of talent in Atlanta, so Risacher won’t be the main option, but I still expect solid contribution as he continues to get more NBA experience under his belt.

Kevin Porter Jr. PG/SG (MIL) $7.87m

With Dame departing Milwaukee, and not much other back court depth, KPJ is all but locked in to be the starting point guard.

In this role he should see almost 10 extra minutes per night compared to last season’s 20 minutes per night.

Therefore, he is definitely value at his price with a high chance of an increase in production.

Ace Bailey SF/PF (UTA) $4.8m

The rookie looks like he is going to get some good usage and minutes for a poor Utah side.

At his price there is so much value, I could see him averaging 22+ppg which will lead to huge cash generation.

He showed promising signs in preseason, but as always it will be difficult for a rookie to adapt to the elite level of the NBA straight away.

Risky options

These are guys that definitley have value but might struggle to score well enough to be in your starting side.

Jaylen Wells SG/SF (MEM) $6.69m

Honestly, I am not sure how much usage Wells will see, but definitely does have the opportunity.

Memphis are depleted, and he should see 30+ miniutes per night so there is potential for an increase in numbers.

Hopefully he sees some more usage, either way at his price, I see value.

Cam Whitmore SF/PF (WAS) $5.81m

Whitmore got just 16 minutes per night in Houston last season, but now he finds himself on a Washington roster with much more opportunity.

He is expected to come off the bench to start the season, which isn’t ideal, but should still see 23+ minutes per night.

Many people believe Whitmore can score well if he gets the usage, so maybe a wait and watch to see his role.

VJ Edgecombe PG/SG (PHI) $4.9m

The top draft pick out of Baylor looks set to start in Philly, hopefully getting 30+ minutes per night.

Obviously he will be far from the first option there, and his usage is questionable, but at his price he is worth a bench spot for sure.

Reed Sheppard PG/SG (HOU) $4m

It has reportedly been confirmed that Sheppard will not be starting for Houston, even still he should see plenty of minutes and opportunity off the bench as one of the only true shooters in their rotation.

I think it is worth monitoring his role early on and not starting him, but at his price there is so much value to be had.
