Basketball Forever founder and Fantasy veteran Alex Sumsky goes through the best Buy, Hold, and Sell options for week 9
NBAEveryone’s favourite time of the week where I pretend to know what’s going to happen in the next 7 days of NBA Supercoach based on player form, injury news, upcoming schedules and an intimate knowledge of 2010’s basketball.
Is that all relevant? Only time will tell.
Let’s take a look at the buy, hold and sell of NBA Supercoach week 9.
Kevin Porter Jr (MIL, PG/SG)
KPJ is like a 2-bedroom apartment in Sydney’s housing market – a hot commodity that you need to get in on because you know the price will only go up.
He’s always been a bit of a fantasy darling with an ability to put up stats across the board in limited minutes, and now he’s getting all the time he can handle while the Bucks are in a state of flux. BUY BUY BUY.
Trey Murphy (NO, SF/PF)
It’s a rotating cast of Pelicans that make the Buy list each week, with Queen, Bey & Fears all recent entrants.
For the Week 9 edition we have Trey Murphy, who since a late start to the season in November has been pouring in 21 PPG, ramping up to almost 24 over the last fortnight and complimented with 3.5 assists and 5.5 rebounds.
128 SC points last week really put him on the radar and looks ready to keep the form up moving forward.
Kel’el Ware (MIA, C)
This might only be a short-term rental as he’s seeing additional run while Andrew Wiggins is out, but whenever Kel’el Ware gets big minutes he puts up big numbers, including two starts in the last week that saw him average 23 / 11 / 1.5 in less than 30 minutes.
In the instance that Wiggins is back soon, just file this one away until the Heat’s next starter goes down to open up some time for Ware.
Maxime Raynaud (SAC, C)
Another understudy to benefit from an injured leading man, Raynaud has been eating since Sabonis went down with a knee injury.
Currently priced around the $5M mark, you’re paying rookie prices for veteran output, with a more than handy 18 points and 9 boards over the last week. With Sabonis looking to be out for a month or so this could be a good way to save some spending money for elsewhere.
Nikola Jokic (DEN, C)
It seems ridiculous to say out loud, but even averaging a near triple-double might not be enough to see the GOAT centre (I stand by it) stop seeing a price drop for the second straight week.
While it might hurt your overall team value in the short term, don’t even glance at that Trade button just yet. You know he’ll be back to his own absurd standards before too long, and with the Nuggets kicking off a 4-game week here’s hoping it’s right now.
Victor Wembanyama (SAS, C)
The French Freak © is back on the court and that’s good news for everyone…but there’s a but.
His first three games since returning have averaged less than 20 minutes each, and in fact have all started with him coming off the bench. He’s looked fantastic as per usual, however Wemby comes with a hefty $22M+ price tag which means he needs to deliver a significant return to justify the cost.
Treat it as a case of if you have him at the moment, keep him, but if you don’t then maybe wait a week until the minutes kick up a notch.
Alperen Sengun (HOU, C)
It’s certainly a centre-heavy column this week, and rightly so because it’s a hotly contested position in the SuperCoach world! Sengun’s last fortnight or so should have had him on your watchlist with 23 points / 10 rebounds / 7 assists and 3 stocks looking very tasty in the box score.
Unfortunately a lacklustre performance against Denver a couple of days ago has soured the milk a little, and with so many good big men available at a range of prices then Alperen is officially on notice.
Jalen Johnson (ATL, SF /PF)
As the 4th highest SC point scorer at the time of writing, it seems a tad daft to be questioning JJ’s spot on the roster, and hopefully it is.
Even if there is a drop in numbers due to Trae Young’s return from injury, it’s hard to imagine that Johnson won’t still deliver enough value to justify the $20ish million price tag.
Truth be told this really should be Jalen’s Hawks team now and hopefully they give him the keys for the long term, but teams are crazy so until that bears out then just keep tabs on happenings in The ATL.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker (ATL, SG/SF)
A direct follow on from the Jalen Johnson note but with a more clear-cut outcome. NAW has been keeping Trae’s seat warm while he comes back from a knee injury and while he’s done an outstanding job, including marks of 22 / 5 / 3 over the last fortnight, he seems destined to slide back into a sixth man role to accommodate Young’s return, even if it’s probably not the best thing for the team.
James Harden (LAC, PG/SG)
The wheels are really falling off for the Clippers with just two wins in their last 16 games, the Chris Paul shambles and players in and out with injury…and that doesn’t even include Kawhi who has now miraculously played 12 straight.
All this has factored into a drop in production from Harden’s hot streak a few weeks back, dropping down to a season-low 17 PPG over the last 7 days. Add in the Clippers playing just two games this upcoming and it’s time to trim The Beard.
Brooklyn Players
Michael Porter Jr has been pushing for a spot on the Buy list for a couple of weeks now, averaging 28 / 6 / 3 over the last month.
Egor Demin is one of the more highly owned cheapies in SuperCoach at 9%.
All that said, alongside the Clippers, Brooklyn is the only team with two games this week and there will be better times to pick through the scraps of useable players in the Barclays Center.
