NBA Supercoach | Week 20: Buy, Hold & Sell

Basketball Forever founder and currently 19th-ranked NBA Supercoach player, Alex Sumsky, goes through the best Buy, Hold, and Sell options for week 20

NBA

Everyone’s favourite time of the week where I pretend to know what’s going to happen in the next 7 days of NBA Supercoach based on player form, injury news, upcoming schedules and an intimate knowledge of 2010’s basketball. Is that all relevant? Only time will tell.

BUY

Devin Booker (PHX, SG/PG)

Book’s starting to cook!

Averaging 30 PTS, 5 REB & 5 AST over the last fortnight and finding a running mate in Jalen Green, Booker is doing his best to drag the Suns into a top-six finish in the West.

Phoenix is one of two teams playing five games in Week 20, and at a very budget friendly $12.7M (at time of writing), Devin will be a popular SuperCoach addition on Tuesday morning.

If you’re pinching pennies, then Jalen Green at less than $9M is also a completely viable option.

Jalen Johnson (ATL, SF/PF)

After a relatively lean couple of weeks, we’re starting to see JJ round back into form, and it’s coincided with the Hawks being on a 9-game winning streak and making a real run at a guaranteed playoff spot.

Johnson is edging back towards the nightly triple-double stats he was putting up earlier in the season, including 24 PTS, 9 REB & 10 AST in Atlanta’s three games last week.

The Hawks are on a four-gamer for Week 20, and while he’s going to cost you upwards of $19M, he’s a worthy buy.

Luka Doncic (LAL, PG)

143, 143, 140 – they’re Luka’s SuperCoach scores from the last three weeks, and that most recent one in Week 19 was from just three games.

That translates to a league-leading 33 PPG over the last fortnight, with a nice little side dish of 9 REB, 8 AST & 3 STOCKS to go with it.

The Lakers have won five on the bounce, are up to 3rd in the West, and are starting to show signs that maybe they could actually make some noise in the playoffs.

Oh, and they play four games this week, so if you don’t have Luka already, then now get him in.

Bennedict Mathurin (LAC, SF/SG)

I solemnly promise this is the last time I will mention Bennedict Mathurin this season…probably.

To be fair this one is only a Watch This Space mention, so it doesn’t even really count.

Kawhi is currently day-to-day with an ankle issue, and while he seems likely to miss at least one game, Mathurin is probably only a worthy add if it’s going to be multiple games out for Leonard.

Our boy Benny Mat is doing a stellar job for the Clips, putting up over 21 PPG since joining mid-season, and he’s likely to get the full green light on the offensive end in games that Kawhi is missing.

Honourable Mention – Quentin Grimes (PHI, SG/SF)

Philly just has the three games this week, so it’s tough to give Grimes a full recommendation, but he’s been stepping up in the absence of Tyrese Maxey, who still has at least another couple of weeks on the sideline.

Grimes is up over 22 PPG in the games since Maxey sat, churned out 106 SC points in Week 19, and will cost you around $8M.

One to watch. 2nd Tier Honourable Mention for Justin Edwards, who also went over 100 SC points and is around the $4M mark.

HOLD

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (OKC, PG)

Between injury trouble and a slight downtick in form (it’s all relative, I know), Shai was coming off a lean few weeks as a SuperCoach blue-chipper, but bounced back in style this week with 128 points (5th overall).

The Thunder seem to be ramping up for the last month of the season on the back of an eight-game win streak, and while they only play three games in Week 20, they go back into four games for Week 21, making SGA a solid hold across the fortnight.

Kawhi Leonard (LAC, SF/PF)

This “Hold” recommendation goes as far as the Clipper’s Tuesday morning injury report.

Kawhi is already listed as Doubtful for tomorrow’s game, so let’s call that one a miss.

If we get news that he’s likely to miss any more games for the week, then he still becomes a cut.

If it’s just going to be one game, though, then that will leave him with three for the week, and on current form, that’s more than enough game time for Leonard to deliver some SuperCoach value.

SELL

Tyrese Maxey (PHI, PG)

This time last week, Maxey was a “Hold” as we awaited confirmation of his finger injury.

We now know that the 2nd overall SuperCoach scorer is out for at least another fortnight, so you can free up a nice $17.5M to spend freely.

As mentioned above, you can find some spare parts in the Philly backcourt in the form of Quentin Grimes or Justin Edwards if you need to save some coin for another position, otherwise it’s someone from the Luka, Ant Edwards, Donovan Mitchell echelon that you’re going to need for a similar level of production.

Jaylen Brown (BOS, SF/SG)

Another downgrade from Hold last week to Sell this week.

Brown finished with 59 SC points in Week 19, and that included a 34 / 6 / 7 against OKC when Tatum was rested.

As good as he’s been this season, it just seems inevitable that Tatum’s continued reintroduction and scaling up of minutes will have to result in a downturn for Jaylen.

I can certainly understand if you want to keep him around for another week with the Celtics playing four games and then make the same call next week when they’re down to a three-gamer.
