NRL Supercoach | Clem’s Captains, Round 4 Skippers

Former sixth-placed finisher Clementine Cassidy analyses the best captaincy candidates for NRL Supercoach Round 4

NRL

10pm Friday night:

Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, B, A… Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, B, A…

Over and over again, I tried.

But no matter how many times I tried, I could not bring in Jenkins or Chan.

And friends, I’m so sorry to be the bearer of this heartbreaking news.

SuperCoach has definitely patched the Konami Code…

And there were only 10 tons scored last round, and I couldn’t have picked any of them (well…except Dally M leader, Jackson Ford, and National Hero, Tanah Boyd).

And in a bit of a bludger of a Captaincy round, where all the Captains basically went sub-85, we must give a round of applause to those who Captained the mighty Wahs, the person who Captained Joe Chan and the one who Captained Thomas Jenkins

True visionaries.

And in other news – Trade Hoarders Season 5 – coming to Netflix this summer!

Starring…

Me.

Because friends, I have a problem.

I fear I’ve developed a fear of trading (FOT).

Despite coming up with all sorts of trading scenarios last week, I only managed one.

A man by the name of Rouchman… and well…that aged well.

And while it’s really nice looking at my 45 trades and 5 boosts – I do feel a slight stab of FOMO when I hear there’s people on their third (THIRD!) boost this round.

And while I still scored a respectable 1,180, avoided too much carnage this week, and haven’t had to bring in Bellamy to blow up at my team in the sheds yet – the lack of Chan x Ford x Jenkins in my team needs to be remedied, and we will be making a boost…

…just as soon as I manage to convince my brain to make my finger push the boost button…we’re in for a long afternoon.

Maybe we’ll bring in MetGoat in honour of his happy return.

And to this week’s Captains we go and I’m just going to breeze right past tonight’s round which is being held in a swimming pool (watch Tommy T x Teddy ton up now).

And yes, you most certainly VC Tanah with his stunning average of 113 and his 3 tries and 6 try assists and 3 line-breaks and 3 line-break assists…and…

But I will not be putting him in this article on the off-chance that I am a jinx.

Walsh x Herbie

And here we have a dilemma.

The Broncos are playing the Dolphins at “It’s OUR House”, and how’s a girl supposed to pick when the last three weeks have pretty much been a rotation of armbands on just these two.

And of course I’m the girl who always chooses the rollercoaster, so I’m going to Walsh.

(I’m so sorry Herbie, with your nice safe points-fest of base stats – please, if you have a special feeling about Herbie, you can absolutely VC him).

And okay, a 3-round average of 67 doesn’t exactly scream VC, BUT Reece is looking sparky and fun.

The 2 tries, a try assist, 2 line-breaks, and a 40/20 in his last 3 games are what we play Reece for – those moments of brilliance where he can go from 0 to 40 in just a moment, and hopefully he keeps the kicking too.

Last time he played the Dolphins, he scored 155 points. He wore my Captaincy armband.

It was glorious.

Spy didn’t have him in his team.

I’m preparing Cody Walker for this week’s Captaincy as we speak.

Can we also quickly mention that the Broncos draw opens up now with the Titans and Cowboys to follow this round.

If you’re one of the 359 people who’ve traded out Reece, please find a mirror and take a good, hard look at what you are doing to your team.

Nathan Cleary

The Panthers are on. Cleary is on.

They’re playing the Eels.

A 3-round average of 81.

What tough draw?

Sua Fa’alogo

A 3-round average of 117. SIX tries. 2 try assists. 4 line-breaks. 7 line-break assists.

Playing the Cowboys, who have had 88 points and 16 tries put on them to start the season, it is less a question about whether or not you should Captain Sua, and more a question of:

WHO are the 28 people trading him out of their teams???

Spoonbowl Smokies: Val x JC x Kini

Sunday Night Spoonbowl. Two teams. No wins.

Two teams who know how to let in a try or ten… and let the points-time roll!

So if you’re looking for a bit of a pod-play for Captaincy this round, look no further than 6.15pm Sunday evening.

Val Holmes

I’m contemplating bringing him into my team.

He’s scored a 94 and an 80 in his last two games, scored 2 tries vs Melbourne, and as the tries rain down at CBUS on Sunday – surely there’s a whole bunch of kicking points coming his way to.

Jayden Campbell

TWO tries and two-line breaks vs the Cowboys in his first game back for the season…and I know it was the Cowboys, but this is the Dragons, so defence isn’t winning this game either.

It’s all gonna be who can cross the line the most in 80 minutes…

Keano Kini

So he hasn’t scored over 67 this season and is yet to score a try, but repeat after me: Points. Fest. Sunday. Night.

Verdict

Sunday Spoonbowl is where it’s at this weekend, because watching one of those teams finally get their first win of the season will be a Hallmark movie moment.

I won’t miss a second of it.

Not quite as good as watching the Warriors get their 4th straight win to start the season, but still, really, really nice.

And as far as Captains go – at 4pm on a Thursday, I still can’t get my fingers to make a boost – so Captains are a tomorrow thing – but as if I’m not VCing Walsh for the 4th week in a row and giving Cody the armband (Sua to wear the armband on the off-chance we don’t get a loopable moment…)

And on that note, I’m off to buy a snorkel and head to Brookie for the swimming champs…

Until next week…
