NRL SuperCoach, 6th overall, 2021
Former sixth-placed finisher Clementine Cassidy analyses the best captaincy candidates for NRL Supercoach Round 6
NRLThe cards have spoken.
We must all bring in Alex Twal and Captain him immediately.
Now regular readers of this article will know I’m normally very statistical and analytical and therefore don’t put weight into signs and omens and crystals and rain dances and all that jazz…
But when you open a pack of NRL League Heroes cards, and Alex Twal gets pulled…
Well, it’s an omen, and it cannot be anything else.
I also pulled a card for Spy at his request on the pod on Tuesday night – Jack Wighton. And because that’s his card, I think it’s only fair he brings in Jack and plays him too.
Watch him go 120 now…

And let’s give Twal a round of applause – 81 minutes and 86 points on Monday. And if we’d brought him in and Captained him instead of Reece, the Friday Beers would have possibly seen some greens this week.
But we did not – we Captained Walsh and copped the 38 points – 1 try, a bunch of tackle busts, zero linebreaks to go with Kini’s 44, including zero line break assists – and fell 1116 places to start Round 6 in 4,226 place.
But swings and roundabouts, and it’s a new week, and we hope Reece recovers well, and we’re still beating Spy, and that’s the main thing.
325 points ahead now…
Spy, I think it’s time you put that SOS out to your boy Royce Hunt.
And now to the Captains, and we have that thing this round where one of the best VC x Captain combos play the first two games and does anybody else always feel super nervous doing that, because then you have to sit through six games manifesting that no other Captain scores higher.

Heck, I’ll probably even Captain him in Round 12, 15, and 19 when he’s on the byes too…
THREE tons so far this season. 2 tries, 7 try-assists, ONE HUNDRED AND TEN points in goal kicks.
115 vs the Storm – the STORM! – last week.
Nathan Cleary and the Panthers have proven there are no tough matches for them this year, and now they come up against the Bulldogs, who haven’t been looking their very best and who are now minus Crichton…
An easy VC on this Thursday night game…
P.S – If you want to look a little left field and go a bit of a pod for your VC, just glance over to Nathan’s left. Here you’ll find the Jenkins x Casey stack. Jenkins is currently the top scoring player in SC – FOUR tons in his first 5 games, TWELVE tries.
Meanwhile, Kiwi hero, Casey McLean, is in on the left side action too, tonning up in his last two games and looking dangerous every time he touches the ball.

He’s straight in and thank you for your service so far this season, Reece.
It’s scary to think how much non-owners, including me, would have had to catch up if he’d gone the full 80…
And have you ever seen a turnaround like Manly had last week? And how many Manly players is too many in our teams pls?
Tommy T looks fit and firing, Manly’s attack is running through him… five tries so far this season in four games, four try assists, 2 line breaks, 4 line break-assists…
In fact, he’s so good he try-contributed his own try last week…the stats don’t lie… (I’m not bitter, I promise ha ha)
And they’re playing the Dragons. The same Dragons who were annihilated by the Cowboys last week.
And while the Dragons have made some changes to their team this week…
…their MVP this Friday night will be the Gong curse.
(Note! If you’re like nah – Nathan x Tommy is too mainstream for me – look no further than a cheeky VC on Koula or Hopoate… both can pile on the points when Manly’s on the attack, and if this goes anywhere close to the Dolphins ambush…owners rejoice!)

(You’re never going to get on the front foot if you’re always on my back foot, Spy. Back away from Latrell and bring in Jack Wighton instead…the card has spoken).
But really, if you don’t own Latrell, it’s time to think about bringing him into your team too, because the man scores about 100 points every time he touches the ball.
Two tons in his four games, 5 tries, 4 linebreaks, a bunch of goal kicks, and an average of 92. What’s not to love?
Playing the Raiders who had 32 points put on them by the high-flying Newcastle last week including six tries – we must ask ourselves, is Latrell the pick of the pod Captains this week?
Embed from Getty ImagesSpeaking of players who can score points and go from 0 to 50 within minutes, this week’s most popular captain is Sua Fa’alogo.
Boasting an average of 102, the second-highest average of all players so far this season in SC – Sua is proving to be a Captaincy choice you have to at least consider every week.
In the Storm’s first five games, Sua has scored 8 tries, 7 line breaks, 8 line break assists, and even in the 50-point scalping by the Panthers last round, he still managed to score a try and get to 65 points.
And could the Wahs be coming up against the Storm at the worst time?
A thumping last week, probably definitely a blow-up to end all blow-ups by Bellamy in the sheds, and now they’re running out at AAMI Park all fired up and ready to break their three-game losing streak…
The Wahs had 6 tries put on them last Sunday arvo – will this be the round I have to captain against my own team?
(I don’t think I can bear to do it – Up the Wahs!)
Embed from Getty ImagesHow can you not have him as a Captaincy option when the man just knocked out a casual 144?
That is all.
This season has been a bit of a season for pod-play Captains.
Just last week, we had Ben Trbojevic go 132, and Kai Pearce-Paul whack out 120.
So that sneaky armband you’re thinking of chucking on Toia or Mark? That might not be such a bad idea…
But for me there’s two contenders for my armbands this week – the Cleary x Tommy T play, or Tommy T into Sua (if I can force myself to Captain against my team).
Until that time, I’m about to go pull some more cards to work out who I should trade in this week…
(I have 41 trades hoarded, just waiting to be burnt),
And I hope you have a lovely weekend, and your Captain scores you a ton.
Clementine xxx
