NRL Supercoach Magic Round Wrap: 10 Things We Have Learnt So Far

Nick Moon has made it out of Magic Round alive and shares other Supercoaches views on what they have learned so far in 2025

NRL

A million beers, a million NRL Supercoach points, a million people, Magic Round truly is rugby league’s Mecca!

The annual pilgrimage took us to Caxton Street and beyond for what was the NRL and Supercoach week that dreams are made of!

As I sit here with one of the world’s great headaches, and a 4-hour wait for my flight, I’m already thinking ahead to 362 nights away (thereabouts) when we can do it all again!

The 4.40am message on Monday morning from Clem confirmed she well and truly took the points.

Spy might have been everyone’s early favourite, but when the lights go out, he is nowhere to be seen.

Couldn’t even suit up for Sunday when things really get going.

But back to the footy..

Nick Moon and friends at Magic Round

The weekend started on a high and didn’t come down from there with Nicho posting 117, then it was Teddy’s turn to roll on with the points scoring 130, but it wasn’t all good news with Bobby T stealing all the centre points and not leaving any for Billy Smith!

His breakout game brought with him a huge 148 points, which sat unused for so many.

Saturday was just as good as the Knights found some Supercoach form with all their guns firing, including Fletcher Sharpe, who was born for Magic Round – literally, his 21st birthday was celebrated with a hat-trick of tries and 128 points!

The Cowboys gave us all so much to cheer about with their guns putting on a show.

Took a bit for them to get going, but they are a side that can score serious points and quickly.

Trying to fade Scotty Drinks over the next month might put me in an early home. But as good as they were, the Warriors held on for dear life and got the 2 points.

The NRL will sooner give the Broncos the bye before the Warriors!

They are hands down the most supported team up here, and boy, did they enjoy the win!

Then Sunday was just more of the same, with points coming from everywhere.

Cleary went big, as did Jenkins, who looks a play as long as McLean isn’t inside him.

To finish the weekend, Ricky’s Raiders pulled off a magic trick, taking the Storm to Golden Point after a Kaeo Weekes try for the ages.

We all agreed that too much Rugby League is never enough!

Oh, and how good was it to see all the Queensland teams losing at Magic Round!

Can’t be having them winning so close to Origin…

The Reapers enjoyed some of the big scores, but some even bigger scores sat unused, finishing with 1474, scoring 400 of those in Knights players alone.

Saw about 3,000 green arrows into 33,009th overall.

I thought that seeing as though we are a third of the way into the season, I will do something a little different this week.

Being on the ground up here in Brisbane, I was able to bump into a whole heap of Supercoaches and thought I’d get their thoughts and opinions on what they might have learnt so far in 2025.

Don’t Be Afraid to Play the Cheapies

Don’t be afraid to play cheapies when they have got the matchup.

I’ve done well this year by picking cheapies and playing them when their matchups suit.

I think we think cheapies are there to sit unused and make money, but I see them as point-scoring opportunities.

Flex is a Game Changer

Flex is one of the better things to be introduced.

Covers injuries better than we expected and allows VC loop without much stress.

Also, bad supercoach players of last year aren’t necessarily bad players this year.

Look at Erin Clark and Gutho. (This was before Gutho’s 5th score under 60)

Stop Picking Manly Players and Stick to the Experts

Stop picking Manly Players.

Also going to the SC Playbook website and see what the “experts” are doing and try to do similar.

I did that last year, and it went well, so after one year of going okay, I thought I was an expert and turns out I’m not.

Oh, and always captain the guy after he’s had a baby, and don’t sell Reuben Garrick.

Hold Trades During The Mini-Bye Rounds

I’m a head-to-head player.

You do not need to get too far ahead of the bye rounds.

As long as you are smart enough to avoid Origin players who might have 50/50 chances of playing, you can hold trades.

I’m bringing players in to play the major bye rounds instead of the minis.

Matchup doesn’t necessarily mean points… unless it is top 3 versus bottom 3.

Play Supercoach likes it’s 2019 again

Forwards are back.

Middle forwards with a lot of offloads are back.

And take the boring Captain option like it’s 2019.

Much better in the long run.

Sin Bins Cost More Than The -8 Points

It’s the sin bins.

They are killing all the big men with their scoring and consistency.

The 10 minutes off the field are costing more than the eight points they lose.

Then they likely spend a week or 2 off the field, which is hard to replace or trade because of how short the charges usually are.

May and Haas are Must-Haves

Ponga and Walsh are garbage and lost me a heap of money.

And if you don’t have Payne Haas and Terrell May you’re doing something wrong.

Clint. Coach of Clint’s Cobbers. He plays fantasy, so he probably won’t even see this.

Go Hard Early and Trade Hard

Trade and trade hard.

Bend your back.

Go hard early, set up your team.

Also, Money Money Money! Dylan Lucas is the best second row in the comp.

Oh and flex is mad, but shit players get bailed out so takes away a bit of risk.

(There was more, but it was a bit incoherent from the boys)

All from the @thescforfeit fellas. Hit them up for some questionable supercoach advice.

Cheers boys!

Steer Clear of Souths’ backs

Flex is the most important position.

And also stay well clear of the Souths’ centres and wingers.

If there’s a soft tissue injury, they will get it.

Not sure if Albo can help us out but whatever they are doing it’s not working

Terrell May is the Way!

Terrell May. This is the way.

Payne Haas, he’s all class.

Jaxson Purdue don’t mind if I do.

Gehamat Shibasaki… Gehamat Shibasaki.

Rory also wanted everyone to know he topped the card on the magic round! Tipped all 8 losers.

Gutho Train Has Halted

Time to get off the Gutho train.

The train was first class about 4 weeks ago, and now has turned into one of the old, grumpy ones from Thomas the Tank Engine.
