NBA Supercoach | Week 18: Buy, Hold & Sell

Basketball Forever founder and currently 17th ranked NBA Supercoach player, Alex Sumsky, goes through the best Buy, Hold, and Sell options for week 18

NBA

Everyone’s favourite time of the week where I pretend to know what’s going to happen in the next 7 days of NBA Supercoach based on player form, injury news, upcoming schedules and an intimate knowledge of 2010’s basketball. Is that all relevant? Only time will tell.

BUY

Kawhi Leonard (LACSF/PF)

It’s Klaw time! The Clippers are coming off a nice, quiet 2-game week, and Kawhi only played one of those after sitting out against Minnesota.

A top 5 SC player over the last fortnight, heading into a 4-game week and with Darius Garland debuting to potentially lighten the load, everything is pointing to a nice little run for Leonard.

Often, that’s been a bad sign in the past, but if we’re going to get burned again, then let’s do it together!

Precious Achiuwa (SAC, C/PF)

If you’re willing to get down in the dirt and rummage around a bit, there is some bargain basement value to be had in Sacramento right now.

We touched on Maxime Raynaud last week, and Nique Clifford is showing some green shoots, but Precious Achiuwa might be the pick of the bunch.

No Sabonis and no Keegan Murray has seen Precious averaging more than 30 minutes per game over the last fortnight, and he’s putting up numbers that put his current $7.5M price tag to shame, including 2 x 20-point double-doubles in the last week.

There’s only 3 games for the Kings this upcoming week, so maybe a hold-off, but one to watch.

Jalen Duren (DET, C)

This is not fact-checked at all, but it feels like Centre must be the hottest contested position in SuperCoach.

Every week we seem to get another one or two have a breakout, and Week 17 was no different, with Jalen Duren & Jarrett Allen both finishing top 3 for SC points.

We’re going to focus on Duren this time, largely due to the Pistons heading into back-to-back 4-game weeks as one of the league’s hottest teams.

Duren and Cade are running the show at the moment, and with numbers nearing 26 points & 14 rebounds per game since the All-Star break, JD looks like a solid bet.

GG Jackson (MEMPF/SF)

Another tanking team, another value proposition.

GG Jackson has quietly gone for 80+ SuperCoach points in 3 straight weeks and at the time of writing is still less than $8M.

His individual numbers aren’t mind-blowing at 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists over the last 15 days, but if that’s his floor, then that’s definitely a good thing.

Somehow, the Grizz are only the 5th-worst team in the West currently; they feel worse, but the race is on to the bottom, and players like GG are going to be beneficiaries.

Word of warning, Memphis have just the 3 games this week.

Kevin Porter Jr (MILSG/PG)

Really just on the list as a self-indulgence.

We said bring him in for Week 17, and he delivered a tasty little 107-point return, so congrats to the 6.5% of owners that have seen the light.

KPJ’s price is starting to sneak up towards the point where he’s competing with some big names, but there’s still another week or two where he’s going to be good value before being priced, so jump in while the water’s warm.

HOLD

Tyrese Maxey (PHI, PG/SG)

Pop quiz – who is the 2nd leading point scorer in SuperCoach this season?

I mean, you should’ve guessed it because of the name above, but yes, Tyrese Maxey is the answer.

In some ways, that was surprising, but when you consider he’s averaging 29 PPG and has only missed 2 games all season, then it stacks up.

Philly play just 3 games in Week 18 but then head into a 5-game monster in Week 19, so keep Maxey in your pocket for that one.

Anthony Edwards (MIN, PG/SG)

After a couple of 100+ point Supercoach weeks in a row, Edwards cooled off slightly in Week 17 with 69 points, and despite Minnesota also having a 3-game week in Week 18, I feel like a bounce back is coming for the Ant Man.

The Timberwolves are right in the thick of it in the battle for a top 4 spot in the West, and a player as competitive as Ant is going to use that as a personal challenge to get cooking.

There are a tonne of quality guards with 4 games this week, so don’t feel bad about trading Edwards if you need to, but if there are more pressing roster issues, then I also wouldn’t worry about keeping him signed up either.

Nikola Jokic (DENC)

The Nuggets seem to have hit the mid-season doldrums, losing 8 of their last 12 games and generally looking pretty beatable.

Coincidence that it aligns with the injury to Buy Hold Sell golden boy, Peyton Watson? Probably.

The good news is that despite the lull, our Serbian saviour is still cranking out numbers like he has no other option.

29 points, 15 rebounds, and 9 assists per game over the last fortnight, and throw in 2 stocks per game to boot.

Denver plays 3 games this week, and again next week, but Nikola stays put for mine.

SELL

Jalen Johnson (ATL, SF/PF)

Tough week for JJ owners.

Played 6 minutes against Washington and came off, missed the next game, then played against Portland with minimal return, all for 24 SC points in total.

Not necessarily droppable on its own merits because the man is the 3rd highest SC scorer overall, but it might make you feel a bit better about cutting him for a couple of weeks due to the Hawks’ schedule.

2 games this week, 3 games the next, see you in a few weeks, Jalen.

Donovan Mitchell (CLE, SG/PG)

Another big dog affected by schedule issues for the upcoming week, and another big dog that you won’t be disappointed about cutting because of recent performance.

3 straight games out with a groin strain for Spida, which was a tough pill to swallow for a lot of Week 17 owners.

Not a long-term issue according to Coach Atkinson, so a week out of your team should be just the tonic to freshen him up for a Week 19 comeback.
