Niko’s AFL Supercoach Watchlist: Buy, Hold, Sell round 9

AFL Supercoach expert Niko gives his best buy, hold and sell candidates heading into round 9 of AFL Supercoach

AFL

2246 in round 8 brings a nice little jump into rank 4749 and into the top 3%.

Luke Jackson was my VC, and he delivered again with 143 which was a great start to the week.

Other positives included the return of Zorko, and big scores from Holmes, Callaghan, Petracca, McInerney and my new toy Kozi Pickett.

But boy was there some negatives.  Walsh, Flanders, Murdock, Lindsay, Bruhn, Marshall, Grilj and Retschko all on field.

Since I decided to avoid Bont with the high breakeven last week, it’s now time for him to come in and it feels good.

Jedd Busslinger ($215,000 Western Bulldogs DEF, B/E -66)

If you don’t have the required DPP to do the trades you want and need a defender, he’s probably your man.  Could also be a good option if you’ve got boosts available.  The only query is that his SC score nearly doubled his DT score.

Samuel Cumming ($176,500 Richmond MID, B/E -54)

Back-to-back 80 scores and primed to trade in on the bubble.  Slightly elevated price is annoying, but he seems like a guy good enough to play on field so worth the extra cash.

Tristan Xerri ($673,700 North Melbourne RUC, B/E 90)

A matchup with Grundy is not ideal but he’s playing a little sore.  Take away the blood game and he’s averaging a staggering 160.5!  There’s not much of a threat of North playing an additional ruck that some teams are adopting.

Kysaiah Pickett ($555,000 Melbourne MID/FWD, B/E 91)

A date with West Coast has him a serious captaincy option this week.  I’d rather Kozi over Trac purely on byes, but both are must-haves.

Marcus Bontempelli ($584,400 Western Bulldogs MID, B/E 98)

He’s clearly playing hampered by the knee injury but still getting it done on matchday.  I suspect they’ll continue to give him a lighter training week to be fit enough to play but keep an eye on the team news.

Lachie Whitfield ($567,700 GWS Giants DEF, B/E 101)

Juicy matchup, juicy bye, and juicy trade in.  Don’t overthink it.

Finn Callaghan ($499,800 GWS Giants MID, B/E 124)

Showed what he can do without a tag and very well priced with two amazing matchups to come in Essendon and West Coast.  High breakeven, but great round 13 bye helps.

Hold

Conor McKenna ($121,200 Brisbane FWD, B/E -51)

I dare say the job security and scoring potential are both too low to trade him in.

Thomas Burton ($99,100 Richmond MID, B/E -44)

On the bubble and basement priced but Cumming is my clear better option.  I’d say the 40 he got against Melbourne is what you’ll likely get moving forward, rather than the 64 against West Coast.

William Edwards ($119,900 Sydney DEF, B/E -27)

Job security seems to be okay but not scoring well enough to trade him in over others available.

Jai Serong ($318,300 Sydney DEF/MID, B/E 60)

Well done if you’ve held him this long!  You should keep doing so for at least another week despite the poor score on the weekend.

Jacob Farrow ($306,100 Essendon DEF/MID, B/E 63)

I think he’s got more ability to spike score than Grilj so he stays in my team.  Plus, defenders and designated kickers have scored well against the Giants so far this season.

Lachlan McAndrew ($370,500 Adelaide RUC, B/E 66)

Coming off a 91 I’m not even considering trading him this week, especially with a matchup against the ruck-less Tigers in what should be a comfortable win for the Crom.

Christian Petracca ($562,400 Gold Coast MID/FWD, B/E 91)

The round 12 bye is too close for me to be endorsing the trade in at this point.

Caleb Serong ($476,800 Fremantle MID, B/E 147)

What a disaster for owners.  It’s tough swallowing the $100k+ loss but a matchup with Essendon is around the corner.

Sell

Colby McKercher ($420,300 North Melbourne DEF, B/E 105)

This new role up forward looks set to stay.  The problem I see with him for holders is that he needed 23 disposals and 2 goals to get a 90 SC score.  Doesn’t seem good.

Samuel Grilj ($302,200 Richmond DEF/MID, B/E 73)

I’m leaning to moving Grilj instead of Farrow.  Higher breakeven and scored better in a big loss rather than a win.  Perfect time to go with a 34 in his scoring cycle.

Tanner Bruhn ($390,300 Geelong MID, B/E 70)

I hate the 101DT and 72SC discrepancy.  Low TOG, DE, contested numbers and metres gained.  I’d like to keep him for one more week, but he’s my trade out for Bont and I have zero second thoughts about it.

Tom Blamires ($294,800 North Melbourne MID/FWD, B/E 57)

He’s obviously fringe best 23 but has handy DPP.  This one is team dependant, but he can go.

Lachie Jaques ($259,800 Western Bulldogs DEF, B/E 53)

Out of favour and I’m assuming didn’t even play well in the VFL, unless his minutes were managed.  He might not be a priority trade out but can go if you can make it work.
