NRL Round 27 team lists: Full squads + NRL Supercoach analysis

The carnage has arrived…

NRL Supercoach is a tough game at the best of times, but we’re now facing one of the most brutal climaxes to a season in recent memory.

With the NRL top four and top eight locked in, numerous teams have mass-rested across the competition.

Others have named key players; however, it’s extremely likely we’ll see more withdrawals as the week unfolds.

Congratulations to all of those who claimed grand final glory in Round 26.

The attention now turns to the overall race, with coaches scrambling to field a full squad.

While the Stallions always embrace the chaos late in the season, a host of injuries means even we’ll be scrapping for a full squad despite the long-term depth strategy.

We had an underwhelming round once again, with just 1,236 points scored to drop to 9.7k overall in a disappointing backend of the campaign.

Shout out to my trade last week: Greg Marzhew (117) out, Braidon Burns (31) in…

Outside of an injury-impacted game, it was the first time since Round 19, 2019 that he hasn’t busted a single tackle. 

Burns dropped out of my team as the lowest scorer in flex. Ah, the joys of Supercoach…

With extreme uncertainty around essentially every line-up, I’ll be a lot more brief in the analysis below this week, instead flagging a few prime targets for anyone with trades along with the team changes themselves.

BULLDOGS vs BRONCOS

Thursday, 7:50pm, Accor Stadium, Sydney

Analysis: The Bulldogs are a reasonable team to target, despite now having nothing to play for.

Their left edge is extremely dominant; however, the right edge comes up against the Broncos’ awful defensive edge on the left.

With Matt Burton shifting to right centre last week, far more attack was sent down that side.

Jacob Kiraz has been named to play despite carrying a calf injury for a month; fingers crossed for owners he actually takes the field.

Jacob Preston will be charging at Ezra Mam and is a genuine target this week, coming off his tonne against the Panthers, which included an outstanding 78 in base and power!

Analysis: Very little interest in the Broncos after an underwhelming performance at home against Melbourne.

Payne Haas plays his final game for the club and should finish in style and is a sneaky VC option, especially with a free loop available to most.

TITANS vs DOLPHINS

Friday, 6pm, Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast

Analysis: Tino Fa’asuamaleaui is finishing the season with a bang, notching 120 points in the loss to the Rabbitohs.

This included a ridiculous 93 points in base and power, made up of 50 tackles, five tacklebreaks, and 17 runs. Huge!

He’s averaged 90 points per game over the past seven weeks, and has played 70+ minutes every game over the past month.

Oliver Pascoe will miss the clash through injury in a huge blow for owners.

Analysis: Selwyn Cobbo is out, while the Dolphins have named a full-strength squad otherwise.

Tevita Naufahu becomes a huge target to cap off the season at zero ownership leading into the round.

The left winger is averaging 76.16 points in his six games of 80 minutes this season.

He averaged 74 points across his seven games last season, finishing the year with scores of 124 and 170 (against the reserve grade Raiders).

RABBITOHS v ROOSTERS

Friday, 8pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney

Analysis: South Sydney have named a full-strength squad, outside of Tallis Duncan, who will be rested.

With the Roosters depleted, this becomes a tantalising match-up for the Rabbitohs.

For me it’s simply left-side, strong-side.

We ranked our top-scoring players of the week on the SC Playbook podcast, I have Alex Johnston and Latrell Mitchell at one and two.

Coming up against a genuine NSW Cup backline, this match-up couldn’t be any better for the star combination.

If you have trades and money, these two pick themselves in my eyes.

Despite his 174-point masterclass last week, I’d avoid Cam Murray who I suspect gets an early shower.

Analysis: The Warriors will run out with an essentially full squad, outside of a few players being managed. This makes them a great team to target.

Te Maire Martin has again been named to return at halfback in a huge boost for those who still own, provided he does in fact start the game.

Analysis: At full-strength and relatively fresh after a bye a fortnight back, the Cowboys are a team to target this week.

Canberra should put up a fight, but with nothing on the line to end the season, a trip to Townsville isn’t ideal for the Green Machine, and there should be points scored both ways.

Scott Drinkwater remains an outstanding purchase this week after producing a strong 91 points against the Tigers.

He’ll be a popular vice-captain or straight captaincy play again this week.

You could make a case for a few Cowboys players; however, if you have a trade and don’t own Drinky, I think he’s the very clear No.1 pick.

Analysis: Simi Sasagi has been named to face the Cowboys in a huge boost for owners.

While there’s no reason why Raiders players won’t perform reasonably well, you wouldn’t rush to invest in any players.

SHARKS vs STORM

Saturday, 7:35pm, Shark Park, Sydney

Analysis: The Sharks have rested some of their big stars, but have still named a solid outfit rather than a complete ‘mass rest’.

KL Iro has been named in jumper 22, I suspect this is due to a lack of numbers to name.

Players such as Ronaldo Mulitalo and Briton Nikora all of a sudden become far less appealing with so many players out, but at least they’re playing!

Analysis: This match-up all of a sudden becomes a far better match-up for the Storm who will be out to finish the season on a high against a weakened Sharks outfit.

Sua Fa’alogo rockets into captaincy contention in a strong Melbourne outfit.

Jahrome Hughes becomes a bit of a left-field final round play for those looking for a super POD.

Analysis: A day clash in the Gong to cap the season looms as a reasonable match-up for both clubs.

Both sides are playing only for pride, but after awful years they’ll be keen to finish on a high.

Regardless, I still don’t particularly like any assets from either squad.

You could take a punt on the likes of Val Holmes, Hamish Stewart or perhaps even a little Mitch Moses flyer for the Eels, but I think there are better purchases.

Analysis: Penrith have sent out their full-strength outfit, an enormous win for Supercoaches!

Whether or not they run out as named remains to be seen, but let’s work off the assumption they do.

Nathan Cleary becomes an almost too obvious captaincy pick, however an early shower is almost a certainty provided the Panthers have a lead.

Dylan Edwards is dirt cheap at just $562k and with no Jaxen Edgar on the bench he should be a pretty safe buy, although Blaize Talagi is an option at fullback.

With Tommy Jenkins fighting for the top try-scorer mantle he could be in for a huge afternoon at Commbank.

With that left edge expected to get a tonne of ball, Casey McLean is also a sneaky option, although there’s probably better buys.
