EPL Supercoach Gameweek 3 Wrap: 7 things we learnt

Fortunately I was able to produce another really solid week to be sitting 589th overall and in the Top 2% – another one where the captaincy play cost some points, but sitting Odegaard was actually my biggest point burner! 

We’ll get into it, but Arsenal after that win over Chelsea look largely fixture proof now… a 2-1 win where they really weren’t pushed that hard by a team plenty are picking as their closest challengers for the title. 

There’s some value to be found over the next few weeks as some teams who’ve started poorly settle into promising fixture runs.

1. Time to cut and run on failing cashies

Frimpong, Santos & Mosquera have hit their ceiling already and unfortunately they’re all living in tight, dreary ground floor apartments rather than Hull City’s penthouse. More than their performances, the fact they’ve lost their starting positions means it’s end of days from a SuperCoach perspective.

Fortunately, if you cut now there’s still plenty who’ll take you upward without much issue – see Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Lindelof or Amar Dedic (pending him holding his starting spot). Malick Yacoule is the best option in midfield for a bargain basement price, a Kobbie Mainoo or Daichi Kamada don’t look terrible options either.

2. Arsenal are clear favourites for a reason

That was a performance of a team unburdened by the mental scarring that affected them at different times last year. If you weren’t sold on Martin Odegaard as the potential player of the season – I hope you are now – he’s the only player I’d consider moving for as a Florian Wirtz owner. 

I’m not sure it makes sense for me to move to Ezri Konsa yet – but he’s next on my list of transfer targets given a double digit break-even this week – we’ve got some time to make sure he’s bedded in.

Riccardo Calafiori is as close as there is to a must-have player in the competition at the moment although even his price isn’t getting too far away from you at this stage given the break-even.

3. Spurs aren’t shot ducks

Hear me out… Nottingham Forest have shown their clear quality as a defensive unit & Spurs are hampered by not having a clear-cut goal-scorer. It was a vastly improved performance on the weekend – they got their first bit of luck in about 6 months when Neco Williams’ goal was disallowed.

The back 6 are now close to full strength and are quality – for that reason I’m reluctant to move out Sandro Tonali until he has a big score which I think may be around the corner.

If you dived into any of their defenders – they’re holds for me at the moment – their fixture is amongst the easiest in the competition over the next two months – with no City or Arsenal & home ties against iffy opponents in Everton & Aston Villa in the next two weeks. Stay strong!

4. Beware Liverpool’s Defence

Jeremy Jacquet is an understandable most traded in player this week given his the base stats – he’s in-form – and if Liverpool can find some support for him in front (which they seem to have done by bringing in Mac Allister) then it’s all systems go.

I worry outside that though… Milos Kerkez still doesn’t convince me and Virgil Van Dijk seems a fading force who is taking a lesser role alongside his new French partner. That is probably beneficial for Liverpool’s chances of challenging the Top 2 this season – less so for owners who want those base stats.

5. Midfield Value Hard to Come By

As you’ll have heard in the podcast – myself, Westy & Matty were rather stumped by the lack of options in midfield coming out of the weekend and coaches have flocked to Malick Yalcoule who is going to cost you two trades in a short amount of time – his price rises should be finished after this weekend.

Head to the Final Word to read up on Harvey Barnes who I like as an option for Newcastle.

For those really looking in the bargain basement at a player to hold onto for a while – I don’t mind Daichi Kamada as a player who’s going to have a bigger role in Crystal Palace’s season or Nottingham Forest’s James McAtee.

The best option though is Fulham’s Josh King with the Cottagers’ style of play tailored to his strengths and the welcome addition of a striker in Gonzalo Garcia (much talked about in FPL circles) who seems to know where the back of the net is.

Trades

Sangare and Tonali are the only ones I’m even having half thoughts about at the moment…and with nothing jumping out at me – the trades are staying in the pocket this week.

Likely a 3-at the back set up with Tonali benched in midfield.

Muharemovic/Vuskovic/Lewis-Skelly → Konza loading – I could not be more enamored with Arsenal’s defence at the moment.
