Here's every back-to-back on the 2026-27 calendar, and the players most likely to turn your four into a three, Alex Sumsky writes
NBAIn every article so far, I’ve counted games. Four beats three, the 4/3 rule, chase the schedule. It’s all true, but there’s a catch I’ve been glossing over…
NBA teams play back-to-back, and when a team has to fit four games into a Monday-to-Sunday week, it almost always means at least one back-to-back.
For most players, that’s fine, because they play both. For the veterans, the stars coming back from major injuries, and the guys on minutes management, the second night is where the rest day lives.
So I went through the full schedule game by game and mapped every back-to-back to its SuperCoach week. Then I lined it up against the players I think are most likely to sit one.

There are 426 team back-to-backs on the 2026-27 schedule, about 14 per team. That’s spread fairly evenly, so the season total isn’t the story. Where they land is.
I counted every regular single SuperCoach week where a team plays four games, leaving out the two double weeks. There are 322 of them across the league. 251 of those include a back-to-back.
That’s 78%. For three-game weeks, it’s 40%. In other words, the four-game weeks you chase are exactly the weeks where rest risk lives.
It’s also worth knowing which teams give you clean four-game weeks, meaning four games with no back-to-back. Phoenix and Minnesota have five each across the season, and Golden State and Philadelphia have four.
Cleveland has none. Every one of the Cavs’ four-game weeks has a back-to-back in it.
At the other end, Boston, Brooklyn, Cleveland, Dallas and New Orleans have the most back-to-backs, with 16 each. Boston and New Orleans have six of them in the first seven weeks alone. Denver has one in the first eight weeks, and it doesn’t land until Week 7.

There are the veterans with a lot of miles on them: LeBron (41), Durant (38), Curry (38), Harden (37), Butler (37) and Lillard (36).
There are the stars coming back from major injuries: Tatum, Haliburton, Kyrie, Lillard again, and Butler.
And there are the players whose teams have openly managed them before: Kawhi, Embiid, Giannis, and AD.
Here’s how their teams’ first eight weeks look. Jokic and the Lakers are included for comparison, because they’re the ones you’ll be captaining.

This is a judgement call, not a rest-day predictor. The league has rules discouraging teams from resting healthy stars, and plenty of these players will play both nights.
But in a weekly-totals game, you have to price in what happens if they don’t. The simple way to do that is to count a rest-risk player’s back-to-back week as one game fewer, and see if your decision still holds.

Embiid and LeBron are exactly the players who sit the second night. If you want a Week 1 Philly captain, it’s Maxey. Philly’s clean four-game week is Week 3, and that’s the week to back Embiid or LeBron if you own them.
Tatum’s Week 5 is a trap. Boston has four games in Week 5, and two of them are back-to-backs. For a player in his first full season back from an Achilles tear, that could easily be a two- or three-game week.
Boston has a back-to-back in every week from 2 to 5. If Tatum’s in your side, assume he loses a game somewhere in that stretch, and look elsewhere for your Week 5 captain.
The Lakers double survives, just. Both of the Lakers’ four-game weeks (2 and 3) include a back-to-back. Reaves plays through them. Luka has sat the odd game but isn’t a planned-rest player. And here’s the thing: if Luka sits one game in Week 2, he’s a three-gamer projecting 108.
That’s still equal to the best three-game captain options. The downside is capped, which is why I’m comfortable keeping the plan.

In Week 12, his five-game week, Denver has two back-to-backs. Even if he sits one game, he still plays four, which is 172 as captain. So that week stays a must-own.
Haliburton’s best week is Week 4. Indiana’s Weeks 2 and 3 both have back-to-backs, and Week 6 has two. Week 4 is a clean four. For a player coming off an Achilles, that’s the week the Pacers have the least reason to rest him.
Durant: Week 4 again. Houston’s Week 2 four-gamer has a back-to-back. Their Week 4 four-gamer doesn’t. If you’re going to captain or trade in Durant early, Week 4 is the safer target.

78%. That’s the share of four-game weeks with a back-to-back in them.
426. That’s the number of team back-to-backs on the 2026-27 schedule, about 14 per team.
0. That’s how many clean four-game weeks Cleveland has all season.
2. That’s the number of back-to-backs in Boston’s four-game Week 5, the worst rest-risk week in the first two months for Tatum owners.
6. That’s the number of weeks Denver goes before its first back-to-back.
