NBA Supercoach expert Alex Sumsky breaks down Week 2 of NBA Supercoach and gives his biggest takeaways
NBATwo weeks in, and the game is starting to sort itself out. The premiums who stumbled in Week 1 came roaring back, the rookies kept rising, a couple of new names forced their way into the conversation, and Week 3 has more four-game teams than any week so far.
Here’s what Week 2 told us, the moves worth making, and the one big decision a lot of coaches are weighing up: whether to bring Shai in for back-to-back four-game weeks.

SuperCoach NBA Week 1 and Week 2 scores
Last week I wrote that the premiums’ slow Week 1 was noise, and that they’d return to their normal level. They did better than that.
Wemby went from 80 to 147, the top score of the week, from just three games. About 1,700 fewer teams owned him in Week 2 than in Week 1. That’s a lot of coaches who sold him the week before his biggest score of the season so far.

Luka put up 139 and Giannis 125, both from three games. Giannis is now playing exactly how we expected when he moved to Miami: huge usage, and the minutes are there when the games stay close.
Jokic scored 98 from three games. He’s dropped to $27.59M, the first time he’s been cheaper than his starting price.
The two going the other way are Maxey and Shai. Maxey’s 115 in Week 1 came from four games. With three in Week 2, he fell back to 85. Shai is the real worry, at 64 from three games. More on him below.
The other big scores of the week: Jayson Tatum (118 from four games, after an Achilles comeback I flagged as one to watch), Cooper Flagg (114 from three), Brandon Miller (110), Walker Kessler (107) and Steph Curry (106).
The cash cows are doing exactly what you bought them for.
| Player | Start price | Now | Week 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yaxel Lendeborg | $4.75M | $7.24M | 99 |
| Cameron Boozer | $5.15M | $7.25M | 81 |
| Caleb Wilson | $5.10M | $7.05M | 66 |
| Darius Acuff Jr. | $4.95M | $6.32M | 79 |
Lendeborg is the standout. He’s already made his owners about $2.5M, and he’s one of the most-owned players in the game. Acuff is the one who’s flown under the radar. He’s taking shots at a volume rookies just don’t get, and he’s in only a fraction of the teams Lendeborg is. If you’ve still got a basement player clogging a starting spot, he’s the cheapest way to fix it.
Cooper Flagg is the other name everyone’s talking about. 114 from three games last week, and at $16.71M he’s still priced below what he’s producing. Dallas has four games in both Week 3 and Week 4.
Eighteen teams play four games in Week 3: Atlanta, Brooklyn, Boston, Cleveland, Dallas, the Lakers, Miami, Milwaukee, Minnesota, New Orleans, OKC, Philly, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, San Antonio, Utah and Washington. Nobody plays two. That means this week is about quality, not chasing games.

Haliburton out, if you’ve got him. He played one game in Week 2 before getting hurt, and he’s out. Flagg is where I’d put the money. He’s a couple of million dearer and SF-only, so you may need to shuffle positions to fit him, but he has four games in each of the next two weeks.
Jalen Johnson back to Giannis. A lot of us swapped Giannis for Johnson after Week 1 for schedule reasons. I did too. Johnson scored 81 from four games, and Giannis scored 125 from three. Miami has four games in Week 3. Swapping back costs about $2M, and it’s worth it.
Underperforming midpricers to Acuff. If you’ve got a $10M to $12M player who isn’t scoring, Acuff at $6.32M is a better player right now and frees $4M to $6M for upgrades elsewhere.
Don’t panic about the rookies who’ve stalled. If you’ve got a cheapie who isn’t getting minutes, he’s a bench problem, not a starting one. Fix it when you’ve got a spare trade, after the bigger moves are done.
OKC have four games in Week 3 and four more in Week 4. That’s eight games in a fortnight from a player who averaged about 36.5 SuperCoach points a game last season when Jalen Williams was out. Williams is out again.
The case against is his start. Shai scored 83 in Week 1 and 64 in Week 2, about 21 a game. His price has slipped from $22.53M to $21.71M.
The case for is everything we’ve seen from the other premiums. Wemby, Luka, Giannis, and Jokic all had slow Week 1s, and all bounced back. Last season, 10 of 12 premium dip weeks were followed by a better week. Shai’s role has grown, his price has dropped, and his schedule is about to peak.
If you’re thinking about it, here’s roughly what the common swaps are worth over Weeks 3 and 4, assuming Shai plays at last season’s without-Williams rate:
| Swap | Extra cost | Games, Weeks 3 + 4 | Estimated gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mitchell → Shai | $3.74M | 8 vs 8 | About +70 |
| Reaves → Shai | $5.09M | 7 vs 8 | About +115 |
| Maxey → Shai | $2.17M | 7 vs 8 | About +80 |
Those are estimates, not promises, and they lean on Shai returning to form. But if you’ve got the cash, or can free it with a bench trade, I think this is the best premium move of the next fortnight. I’m trying to find the money for it myself.
Captain. Luka and Wemby both have four games, and both just went big. I’m going Wemby. The risk with Luka is the back-to-backs. There’s a real chance he doesn’t play both ends, or sits the Sacramento game, depending on how JJ Redick wants to manage him.
A four-game week can quickly become a three-game week. Wemby doesn’t carry that risk this week, and San Antonio have four more games in Week 4 if you want to keep the armband on him. Giannis and Flagg, both with four games, are the zags.
Back Mitchell. He scored 88 from four games in Week 2, and Cleveland has four more this week. We’re backing him for an even stronger four-game week.
Haliburton is out. If you’re still holding him, he has to go this week. A $14.76M player scoring nothing is a hole you can’t carry into a four-game week.
Watch Tatum. 118 from four games is the clearest sign yet that he’s back. Boston has four games again.
Week 3 is the deepest week of the season so far. Get your four-gamers right, and it’s a chance to make up ground. Let me know your moves in the comments.
