NFL Supercoach | Buy, Hold, Sell, Week 5

NFL Supercoach expert Josh Clutterbuck goes through the best buy, hold, and sell options for Week 5

NFL

G’day coaches and welcome back! Week 4 proved to be once again another tumultuous week in the world of the NFL.

SuperCoach-wise, I had a shocker. Injuries to Chase and Moore heavily affected my scores, as well as a misfire at the QB position, with my skipper Allen scoring 38 and my POD Shough only managing 31 under the bright lights of the prime-time slot.

Moore’s injury affected the production of Kincaid, who has failed to fire since entering my team, and to be honest, I’m losing my patience with the Bills players!

A starting DNP from Jefferson ended up not being the worst, with my lowest-scoring WR being Boston with 21. Big scores from Lamb, Bijan, and K9 saved me from what was almost a disastrous week, which still saw me only score 444.

This week I do still need to make a few changes whilst navigating the first bye week of the year. My team’s not perfect, but hopefully, hopefully everyone plays and isn’t injured this week!

Buy

Drake Maye (QB New England Patriots, $21.29m, 40 BE, 2% ownership)

Am I a one-eyed Patriots supporter? Yes. Should you take this with a grain of salt? No! Drake ‘Drake Maye’ Maye is back!

For the first time this season, we saw our guy back his instincts, tuck the ball and run and throw without fear. The Pats and Maye were without their top wideout and 2 of the top defensive players and still managed to walk into Buffalo’s shiny new stadium and get the win.

Maye himself was incredibly impressive, throwing for 269 yards, 3 TD’s, and 1 interception whilst adding 54 yards on the ground. The 3 fumbles and interception are still a concern; I’ll give you that, but this is the get-right game he needed.

I wasn’t going to include Maye this week until I saw his run of games leading into the team’s Week 11 bye. Games against the Bears and Green Bay will be difficult and possibly Vegas this week, but he’ll also be going up against the Jets, Phins, and Detroit before returning against the Chargers and the Bills.

If you’re looking for a straight swap from Lamar, who is a POD with high upside, back last year’s runner-up in MVP voting.

Chase Brown (RB Cincinnati Bengals, $16.15m, 36 BE, 10% ownership)

I personally don’t think there are any must-buy RB prospects this week due to BEs and incoming bye weeks, but I do want coaches to keep this guy on their radar and, if they already own him, to keep him on their team.

Chase Brown is one of my favourite players and, as per usual. has started slowly. That’s okay. It took until week 8 for him to hit his straps last year, when he ended up finishing as the 7th RB in draft leagues.

What I like about Brown is his receiving game. He ran the ball awfully last week for 10 yards on 9 carries. He did catch the ball 11 times for 71 yards. With uncertainty around Chase and Higgins at the WR position, Brown has the potential to pop off against a weak Dolphins team this week.

They do have the bye the following week, but I think you’re doing yourself an injustice if you don’t keep an eye on his workload this week.

Nico Collins (WR Houston Texans, $16.35m, -10 BE, 3% ownership)

For once, the Texans are being let down by their defence! Collins has been out for 2 of the 4 games but has performed at an exceptionally high level when available. With his team 0-4 to start the season, Collins is going to be relied upon heavily to get this team out of its rut. Stroud is throwing the ball nicely, and Collins is catching it splendidly.

Collins should be the number 1 addition this week across the league. I don’t think we will see him anywhere near this price for the rest of the season, and he has real potential to be a year-long keeper if he can stay healthy.

Collins caught 7 of 8 targets for over 100 yards and 2 TD’s and now faces division rival the Titans, whom he should have a field day against.

Darius Cooper (WR Philadelphia Eagles, $4.1m, -32 BE, 0.3% ownership)

I think outside of the main cheapies we have previously discussed, Cooper is the last of the Cheapie WR’s we can make coin off for now. I’d be looking at him as a possible trade him depending on Smith’s diagnosis.

The 33 score will be around for 2 more weeks after this and contribute massively to his price rises and will quite possibly coincide with Smith returning from his hamstring injury. This isn’t a long-term solution, and I’d only be doing it if I had trades up my sleeve and needed a short, fast burst of cash.

Brock Bowers (TE Las Vegas Raiders, $15.48m, -5 BE, 29% ownership)

I think we may have found this year’s 2025 Trey McBride. Bowers is averaging 12 more points per game than the next closest guy, George Kittle, who is already $3m more expensive than Bowers.

Fellow contributor Oscar has already outlined how Bowers is lining up as basically a WR, and I agree that he could be the number 1 player to have in SuperCoach this year.

For me, I am still carrying trauma from last year, when I wasn’t able to get McBride into my team until it was too late. I don’t want that to happen this year and am seriously tossing up bringing Bowers in. With 25 targets and 16 catches in 2 games, it’s obvious Bowers is the focal point of this revamped Raiders offense.

Hold

Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase (WR Vikings and Bengals)

These 2 have to be paired together this week as holds. It was frustrating having Jettas miss the game last week, but it worked out alright for me in the end! It was more frustrating seeing Chase go down in what looked to be a possible big game for the star Bengals receiver.

Both these guys I’ve spoken about having on my team for the year, both are injured and will potentially miss this week, and both will be on a Week 6 bye. I’m holding until 1 is ruled out. If I were to trade one out if they both do get ruled out, it would have to be Chase due to his higher price and BE. I urge everyone to save their trades and wait to see what happens before jumping the gun.

Bryce Young and Mahomes (QB Panthers and Chiefs)

Our 2 bye-week guys. I like the way both are playing, and both are looking very intriguing post-bye round as potential buys. If you are trading these guys out this week and bringing them back next week, I’d urge you not to if you can avoid it! If you have a 3rd QB like Jalon Daniels or Watson, I think it’s fine to stream them for just this week.

With the amount of injuries we are seeing so far, I’d be worried about getting into a similar position I did last year, where I wasn’t able to trade out an injured QB at the end of the year because I made moves like this at the start. One potentially down week could mean a potential save at the end of the year; don’t forget that.

Tyler Warren (TE Indianapolis Colts, $11.5m, 22 BE, 16% ownership)

Crazy seeing this guy on the list this week. I can maybe get it if you’re using him as a stepping stone to Bowers, but I still don’t love it. Warren has proven himself to be one of Jones’s favourite targets through the first year and a bit of their time together.

Last year’s 4th-ranked TE is currently sitting 8th and is halfway to his yearly total of 4 TDs, and we’re barely a quarter of the way through the year.

As many have pointed out, TE is an incredibly tough position to handle SuperCoach-wise, and I wouldn’t be making too many more hasty moves at the position, especially if you have a top 10 guy at the position. Watch him score this week against an average Steelers team.

Sell

Lamar Jackson (QB Baltimore Ravens, $22.56m, 32 BE, 39% owned)

He was going alright until he wasn’t. Lamar is starting to have the label of ‘injury-prone’ floating louder and prouder above his head. Rapport is reporting that the sprained ankle is more unusual and serious than other sprained ankles, and he could miss a few weeks.

If this were a one-week injury, I’d be inclined to keep him and see how he goes. But it’s not looking like it. Last year he returned from his hammy injury and wasn’t the same.

An ankle is still a part of your leg, which will no doubt hamper his running ability, which in turn makes him a threat. Avoid the price crash like last season and pop on over to a Maye or Shough or a Kirk Cousins if you really want to go wild.

DJ Moore (WR Buffalo Bills, $11.7m, 33 BE, 9% ownership)

This one hurts. I brought him in, and he did an AC joint injury that isn’t getting better. In fact, it’s getting worse. Moore has re-injured/ re-aggravated his AC joint injury and didn’t return to the game last week against the Patriots.

The Bills have stated that it’s once again pain management and he’s week to week, but it’s obviously not good and is hampering his performance. If he didn’t re-injure it, I’d be more inclined to keep him.

The thought of a receiver having to lift his arms up to catch a ball, getting belted while those arms are up, and landing full flight on his shoulder after all that while carrying the AC injury makes me squirm a bit. I’d be more inclined to wait until after their bye and revisit him in week 8 to see if he’s progressed and try to get him at a bargain price.

One to watch

Not a sell yet, but keep an eye on Zay Flowers. He’ll make cash this week, but I’d be keen to see his production without Lamar throwing him the ball. Get the cash gen this week, then look to possibly sell next!

Dalton Kincaid (TE Buffalo Bills, $12.19m, 52 BE, 15% ownership)

Mannnnnnn this hurts even more than the last guy. I brought him in, and he’s gone for scores of 5 and 2. If I got rid of Likely for the reason that I didn’t want to lose what we’d gained, then by principle, I have to get rid of Kincaid. And I know he might score incredibly well this week, but I just have to.

DJ Moore being healthy is the key to Kincaid’s success. Coach Joe Brady has said it’s on him to get him the ball, which does worry me a bit that he will pop off, but as stated above, I can’t get stuck with that BE and cash drop.

I think if you don’t own Bowers, this may be the time to move up and get him.

Trades and Captain

Last week I opted to get rid of Hampton and Likely. Hampton, I’m glad to be gone from; Likely is going to frustrate me by not having him for the rest of the year, I feel, but oh well, I banked up some serious cash

This week I had 2 big fires I felt I needed to put out. I actually have fires everywhere, but these seemed to be the worst of the lot. I almost got talked into keeping one of these guys, but I can’t hold on much longer. This week I am trading….

TRADE IN – COLLINS AND BOWERS

TRADE OUT – MOORE AND KINCAID

I’m down to 1 Buffalo player, and I’m happy about it. I think Collins and Bowers are no-brainers. When healthy, they are 2 of the best producing at their respective positions.

As mentioned above, Bowers could be this year’s McBride and may punish anyone who doesn’t get on quick enough. I like that he’s lining up as a WR a lot, and I like that Kirk is playing good ball.

Collins is always going to concern me with injury history, but when he’s on the field he’s one of the best, and I love watching him do his thing. Moore’s injury to his shoulder frightens the hell out of me because I know how bad that pain can be personally; I’d hate to get hit whilst dealing with it. I almost kept him because I do think he will be an integral part of this team, but just not right now with a bung shoulder.

Captain this week at this stage is Allen, who will be in the last game of the round. I’m tempted by Gibbs against the Cardinals and also Bijan in the prime-time slot once again; look for him to have over 150 all-purpose yards in that one.

VC this week is the first game, and it’s Lamb for the Cowboys. If he goes for over 50, I will be looping in a heartbeat.

Best of luck this weekend! Keep us updated with scores and questions in the Discord, and I will see you next week. Cheers.
