NRL Round 6 Teams: Supercoach Squad Analysis

Former NRL Supercoach runner-up Tim Williams deep dives into the NRL round 6 team lists with full Supercoach analysis.

NRL

We’ve arrived at NRL Supercoach Round 6 after an excellent start to the season.

There’s a reasonable amount of diversity in teams with the hooking slot wide open, as is the fullback position with a number of proven guns bottoming out while new faces emerge.

We’re getting to that point of the season where we begin to ask the question of when the time is to shift our focus from cash generation to points focus with our trades.

Early on in the year it’s about banking that cash to increase squad value, to allow us to maximise guns in our team later in the year.

But it can’t be done entirely at the expense of focusing our trades on the best players who will score the most points, which is after all what wins you the Supercoach title and head-to-head leagues.

There’s been plenty of quality cheapies hitting their straps so far this season, so cash generation across the competition has been strong for the majority.

This will see many Supercoach begin to transition their trade focus to points over cash.

By this I mean you may avoid a cheapie with a negative breakeven, in favour of a gun player with more points upside but with little money to be made.

An example this week would be trading in Eliesa Katoa over Thomas Cant.

There’s no right or wrong method to this, going hard at additional cash generation for extended periods or going early on points can both be effective.

My question for those shifting to points early who are content with their cash growth so far, can you really have too much cash?

Perhaps the strategy is to continue to maximise squad value for a longer period and build an enormous bank to stack your squad with.

It’s always an intriguing question, so I’ll leave it to the individual.

The Cooma Stallions had an okay week without going great, scoring 1,166 points to drop a few spot to 7k overall.

The team went well, but my fear going into the round was that I didn’t have a standout captain as a non-Cleary or Gutherson owner who had the key match-ups.

They both delivered, especially the latter, while Payne Haas notched just 104 points for the Stallions.

We have nearly $300,000 in the bank leading into round 6 with some big moves to be made, so hopefully we can make it count.

Let’s take a look at the NRL Supercoach analysis for round 6, with squad lists courtesy of Fox Sports.

DOLPHINS v PANTHERS

Thursday, 7:50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

Dolphins: 1. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow 2. Jamayne Isaako 3. Jake Averillo 4. Herbie Farnworth 5. Jack Bostock 6. Kodi Nikorima 7. Isaiya Katoa 8. Daniel Saifiti 9. Jeremy Marshall-King 10. Felise Kaufusi 11. Kulikefu Finefeuiaki 12. Tom Gilbert 13. Max Plath

Bench: 14. Kurt Donoghoe 15. Mark Nicholls 16. Connelly Lemuelu 17. Josh Kerr

Reserves: 18. Sean O’Sullivan 19. Kenny Bromwich 20. Oryn Keeley 21. Max Feagai 22. Junior Tupou

Analysis: Despite a strong first win of the season, I have no interest in the Dolphins for the time being with match-ups against the Storm and Panthers to come, both at Suncorp, into the Raiders in Canberra.

The Dolphins do play all three of the major bye rounds, so they will become relevant in a few weeks time once the draw eases up.

Shout out to Daniel Saifiti who has flown under the radar in a stacked FRF position, averaging 68 for the season with 47 in base to rise $140k so far.

Tom Gilbert returns from suspension on the edge, with Max Plath at lock.

Panthers: 1. Dylan Edwards 2. Paul Alamoti 3. Izack Tago 4. Thomas Jenkins 5. Casey McLean 6. Blaize Talagi 7. Nathan Cleary 8. Moses Leota 9. Luke Sommerton 10. Lindsay Smith 11. Scott Sorensen 12. Liam Martin 13. Isaah Yeo

Bench: 14. Brad Schneider 15. Isaiah Papali’i 16. Liam Henry 17. Luke Garner

Reserves: 18. Daine Laurie 19. Matt Eisenhuth 20. Trent Toelau 21. Mavrik Geyer 22. Jesse McLean

Analysis: Is it time we start looking at the Panthers in a different light in regards to difficulty of opposition? Perhaps…

They’re definitely still a daunting prospect and not a side I’d ideally look to target in any way, but with their injury list and some defensive concerns on their edges there’s certainly Supercoach opportunity that we haven’t had for five years.

For what it’s worth, I’m confident they’ll click back towards their best soon, but for the time being they’re certainly vulnerable as evidenced by the 28 points per game they’re conceding.

Nathan Cleary has near-enough bottomed out at $688k having dropped $123k from his starting price.

With a breakeven of 116 there is potentially another price drop to come, but we know Cleary can do that in his sleep and he has an enormous ceiling, so I’ll be looking to recruit this week.

Last week’s most popular trade in Thomas Jenkins scored 66 for an initial price rise of $130k to sit with a breakeven of -29, you beauty!

Isaah Yeo is an interesting prospect having bottomed out at $648k having dropped $78k so far.

He averaged an outstanding 74 points per game in 2024.

Further, with Penrith struggling and injuries hitting it definitely reduces the opportunity for Ivan Cleary to give him early rests or the likelihood of sitting out games around the Origin period.

He has a base of 50 per game this season and is among the most reliable 2RFs in the game.

Dylan Edwards returns from injury at fullback.

Blaize Talagi starts at five-eighth in place of Jack Cole who is out with a concussion, while Luke Sommerton replaces the injured Mitch Kenny at hooker.

DRAGONS v TITANS

Friday, 6pm, WIN Stadium, Wollongong

Dragons: 1. Clinton Gutherson 2. Tyrell Sloan 3. Moses Suli 4. Valentine Holmes 5. Christian Tuipulotu 6. Kyle Flanagan 7. Lachlan Ilias 8. Toby Couchman 9. Damien Cook 10. David Klemmer 11. Luciano Leilua 12. Jaydn Su’A 13. Jack de Belin

Bench: 14. Jacob Liddle 15. Blake Lawrie 16. Hamish Stewart 17. Dylan Egan

Reserves: 18. Mathew Feagai 19. Raymond Faitala-Mariner 20. Sione Finau 21. Lyhkan King-Togia 22. Loko Jnr Pasifiki Tonga

Analysis: Is King Gutho a must?

Probably not, but far out he’s putting up a compelling case with a 109 point average across the first month.

He has three tonnes, all huge, and his only failure was a 47 against title favourites Melbourne in a bog.

The draw remains fairly soft too with games against the Titans, Tigers and Warriors to come in the next three weeks.

With a breakeven of 78 his price won’t skyrocket if at all, but he remains a great buy in coming weeks.

Overshadowed in Supercoach terms by Gutho and Christian Tuipulotu, Val Holmes has quietly ticked over with a 65 point average to drop $81k to $703k.

That left edge of the Dragons is absolutely humming.

Val has an excellent base of 32 per game plus the addition of his goalkicking.

He’s scored 70+ in three of his four games so far.

Dylan Egan is popular this week at just $198k with a breakeven of -38.

He’s averaging 50 points per game in an excellent 51 minutes per game, with 45 in base.

He’s only available at 2RF, but he looks a great downgrade to free up cash.

Titans: 1. Jaylan De Groot 2. Tony Francis 3. Brian Kelly 4. Phillip Sami 5. Jojo Fifita 6. AJ Brimson 7. Jayden Campbell 8. Moeaki Fotuaika 9. Sam Verrills 10. Reagan Campbell-Gillard 11. Klese Haas 12. Beau Fermor 13. Chris Randall

Bench: 14. Arama Hau 15. David Fifita 16. Jaimin Jolliffe 17. Brock Gray

Reserves: 18. Tom Weaver 19. Jacob Alick-Wiencke 20. Sean Mullany 21. Tukimihia Simpkins 22. Allan Fitzgibbon

Analysis: After two weeks of promise, the Titans almost looked back to square one with an underwhelming performance against the Dolphins.

Their draw remains nice with games against the Dragons, Raiders and Cowboys incoming.

Tino Fa’asuamaleaui is suspended in a blow for his owners.

Jayden Campbell owners were relieved to see his score almost double after updates to 52 without a try or try-assist.

Granted it was still well under expectation.

David Fifita got a start last week for 65 minutes, managing a disappointing 46 points.

At $650k with a breakeven of 89, he looms as a bargain buy at some stage, but the timing doesn’t feel right for now.

Surprisingly, he’s busted just six tackles and offloaded five times in four games this season. Against the Dolphins he had just five runs.

To put it in perspective, while acknowledging he played bigger minutes, he averaged 5.35 tackle busts per game last season.

With Jojo Fifita back at centre, Beau Fermor returns to the back-row and David Fifita moves to the bench.

BRONCOS v ROOSTERS

Friday, 8pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

Broncos: 1. Reece Walsh 2. Selwyn Cobbo 3. Kotoni Staggs 4. Gehamat Shibasaki 5. Jesse Arthars 6. Ben Hunt 7. Adam Reynolds 8. Patrick Carrigan 9. Cory Paix 10. Payne Haas 11. Jack Gosiewski 12. Jaiyden Hunt 13. Kobe Hetherington

Bench: 14. Billy Walters 15. Corey Jensen 16. Xavier Willison 17. Martin Taupau

Reserves: 18. Tyson Smoothy 19. Deine Mariner 20. Jock Madden 21. Benjamin Te Kura 22. Blake Mozer

Analysis: Jesse Arthars has likely peaked at $509k with a breakeven of 59, however with a 70 point average for the season and a clash with the leaky Roosters defence there’s no harm in holding for another week to play him.

He scored two tries against the Tigers for just 60 points, with only 12 in base!

Adam Reynolds has been named despite leaving the field early last week.

Having likely peaked at $641k with a breakeven of 113 a move to Cleary or another gun half looks a quality play.

Roosters: 1. James Tedesco 2. Daniel Tupou 3. Billy Smith 4. Robert Toia 5. Dominic Young 6. Sandon Smith 7. Hugo Savala 8. Nat Butcher 9. Connor Watson 10. Naufahu Whyte 11. Angus Crichton 12. Siua Wong 13. Victor Radley

Bench: 14. Zach Dockar-Clay 15. Salesi Foketi 16. Blake Steep 17. Spencer Leniu

Reserves: 18. Mark Nawaqanitawase 19. Taylor Losalu 20. Ethan King 21. Chad Townsend 22. Makahesi Makatoa

Analysis: With upcoming games against the Broncos away into Penrith I don’t love any Roosters for the time being.

Lindsay Collins is out for six weeks which helps the job security of Naufahu Whyte and Siua Wong.

Likely due to concerns over job security and the Roosters poor form, Wong has flown under the radar for a 67 point average and $190k in price rises.

Following his 119 against the Rabbitohs he has a breakeven of -24.

He’s averaging an excellent 52 in base, which elevates to 56.25 across the past month.

In a losing side, James Tedesco managed 101 against the Rabbitohs, averaging 81 for the year.

He’s dropped $79k and likely won’t be impacted by Origin.

You could buy now, but I’ll likely be eyeing off after their round 10 bye at some stage.

Billy Smith scored 76 in his first game of the season and looms as a strong cheapie pick up next week, while Mark Nawaqanitawase could explode on the wing if he plays there with Dom Young reportedly dropped, close watch as to how this side runs out on Friday.

Hugo Savala starts at halfback in place of Chad Townsend (dropped).

SHARKS v SEA EAGLES

Saturday, 3pm, Optus Stadium, Perth

Sharks: 1. William Kennedy 2. Samuel Stonestreet 3. Jesse Ramien 4. Mawene Hiroti 5. Ronaldo Mulitalo 6. Braydon Trindall 7. Nicho Hynes 8. Addin Fonua-Blake 9. Blayke Brailey 10. Oregon Kaufusi 11. Briton Nikora 12. Teig Wilton 13. Cameron McInnes

Bench: 14. Daniel Atkinson 15. Siosifa Talakai 16. Toby Rudolf 17. Thomas Hazelton

Reserves: 18. Tuku Hau Tapuha 19. Billy Burns 20. Hohepa Puru 21. Jayden Berrell 22. Jesse Colquhoun

Analysis: Nicho Hynes failed to impress with just 48 points against the Raiders.

With a season average of 72 he’s a fine hold for owners, but non owners may look to Jahrome Hughes to partner Nathan Cleary longer term.

I flagged Briton Nikora’s poor base stats last week that’s led to an average of 63 despite scoring five tries this season.

That continued in Canberra, scoring a double for 87 points with just 39 in base.

He’s $620k with a breakeven of 62, but I’d like to see that work rate increase before considering the buy.

Sea Eagles: 1. Lehi Hopoate 2. Jason Saab 3. Tolutau Koula 4. Reuben Garrick 5. Clayton Faulalo 6. Luke Brooks 7. Daly Cherry-Evans 8. Josh Aloiai 9. Jazz Tevaga 10. Siosiua Taukeiaho 11. Haumole Olakau’atu 12. Ben Trbojevic 13. Jake Trbojevic

Bench: 14. Jake Simpkin 15. Nathan Brown 16. Ethan Bullemor 17. Toafofoa Sipley

Reserves: 18. Tommy Talau 19. Aaron Schoupp 20. Jakob Arthur 21. Lachlan Croker 22. Michael Chee Kam

Analysis: Manly’s incoming draw isn’t ideal against the Sharks, Dragons, Panthers, bye, Sharks.

Again keeping in mind though that the Sharks and Panthers defensively are currently underperforming.

Reuben Garrick has been flagged as a sell by some this week with back-to-back scores of 53 and 61.

He’s peaked in price at $806k with a breakeven of 134.

I fully understand the play from a cash perspective, but I also feel he’s a set-and-forget season keeper where you just ride the price fluctuations.

I’d prefer utilise my trades elsewhere.

Haumole Olakau’atu looks in devastating touch, managing 86 points despite the heavy loss to Melbourne.

RABBITOHS v COWBOYS

Saturday, 5:30pm, Optus Stadium, Perth

Rabbitohs: 1. Jye Gray 2. Alex Johnston 3. Euan Aitken 4. Jack Wighton 5. Isaiah Tass 6. Latrell Mitchell 7. Jayden Sullivan 8. Sean Keppie 9. Peter Mamouzelos 10. Tevita Tatola 11. Keaon Koloamatangi 12. Jai Arrow 13. Lachlan Hubner

Bench: 14. Liam Le Blanc 15. Siliva Havili 16. Tallis Duncan 17. Davvy Moale

Reserves: 18. Thomas Fletcher 19. Salesi Ataata 20. Fletcher Myers 21. Haizyn Mellars 22. Nazareth Taua

Analysis: Jamie Humphreys owners were robbed of another cash rise after leaving the field early with a hamstring injury against the Roosters.

He’s now out and has peaked at $424k with a breakeven of 94, along with Latrell returning with the goal-kicking, sell.

Peter Mamouzelos is also a potential sell at $460k with a breakeven of 39.

That being said, the match-up with the Cowboys is decent and there aren’t too many standout hookers around so there’s no harm in waiting for one more week ahead of match-ups against the Bulldogs, Storm, Knights and Broncos.

With that draw to come and players still to return from injury I’d avoid investing in any Rabbitohs for now outside of perhaps Lachlan Hubner with a -22 breakeven.

Cody Walker could potentially drop to as low as sub $350k on return from injury making him a bargain buy across the Origin period as a back up in the halves with dual 5/8-HFB positioning.

With Walker out, Latrell Mitchell starts at five-eighth.

Alex Johnston and Euan Aitken have been named to return from injury.

Cowboys: 1. Scott Drinkwater 2. Robert Derby 3. Jaxon Purdue 4. Viliami Vailea 5. Murray Taulagi 6. Tom Dearden 7. Jake Clifford 8. Jordan McLean 9. Reece Robson 10. Jason Taumalolo 11. John Bateman 12. Kai O’Donnell 13. Reuben Cotter

Bench: 14. Sam McIntyre 15. Jeremiah Nanai 16. Griffin Neame 17. Coen Hess

Reserves: 18. Harrison Edwards 19. Zac Laybutt 20. Thomas Duffy 21. Karl Lawton 22. Thomas Mikaele

Analysis: Jaxon Purdue owners will be laughing all the way to the bank having made $171k so far, sitting with a breakeven of -7.

He’s an exceptional young talent.

The Cowboys have the bye next week so I wouldn’t be investing in any players, however a return to form has put them back on the radar from round 8 onwards.

Reuben Cotter returns from an illness.

EELS v RAIDERS

Saturday, 7:35pm, TIO Stadium, Darwin

Eels: 1. Isaiah Iongi 2. Josh Addo-Carr 3. Viliami Penisini 4. Sean Russell 5. Zac Lomax 6. Dylan Brown 7. Dean Hawkins 8. Joe Ofahengaue 9. Ryley Smith 10. Junior Paulo 11. Shaun Lane 12. Kitione Kautoga 13. J’maine Hopgood

Bench: 14. Dylan Walker 15. Luca Moretti 16. Charlie Guymer 17. Sam Tuivaiti

Reserves: 18. Joash Papali’i 19. Dan Keir 20. Bailey Simonsson 21. Ronald Volkman 22. Ryan Matterson

Analysis: Isaiah Iongi owners were rewarded for holding with 107 points against the Dragons.

He’s now risen $166k and sits with a breakeven of -19.

While there’s certainly still merit in buying with more cash to come, he’s a little awkwardly priced at $399k in an Eels outfit that still has concerns.

Personally I’d probably look to target a fallen gun at fullback over Iongi for now, but with games against the Raiders and Tigers to come you could knab the short-term cash.

Dylan Brown produced his best performance of the season with 93 points which is enough to see some invest in the playmaker.

He had a monster 43 in base in this game with 25 tackles and 11 runs.

I’m a happy enough owner with an average of 63, but with Cam Munster playing well in a rampaging Storm outfit and the upside of Jayden Campbell I think there are better buys.

If you can trust job security, Kitione Kautoga is just $329k with a breakeven of -22.

Ryley Smith has been named to start, but as per the late change last week he may still play from the bench.

Zac Lomax moves to the more wing in what’s expected to be a permanent move which is a huge plus for his scoring.

Embed from Getty Images

Raiders: 1. Kaeo Weekes 2. Savelio Tamale 3. Matthew Timoko 4. Sebastian Kris 5. Xavier Savage 6. Ethan Strange 7. Jamal Fogarty 8. Josh Papali’i 9. Tom Starling 10. Joseph Tapine 11. Hudson Young 12. Matt Nicholson 13. Corey Horsburgh

Bench: 14. Owen Pattie 15. Simi Sasagi 16. Morgan Smithies 17. Ata Mariota

Reserves: 18. Trey Mooney 19. Jed Stuart 20. Adam Cook 21. Pasami Saulo 22. Danny Levi

Analysis: He’s a fairly volatile Supercoach scorer, but Hudson Young is scoring well with 110 against the Sharks to take his season average to 73.

His 46 in base is solid, but when considering him as a 2RF gun at $688k he is a little attack reliant.

He has low scores this season of 44 and 42.

Savelio Tamale has risen $163k and sits with a breakeven of -10, he’s a hold for another week or two with more cash to come.

Matty Nicholson was terrific against Cronulla, playing 78 minutes for 91 points including an outstanding 56 in base.

He’s an indefinite hold for owners, and a potential buy for non-owners.

The concern is the looming return of Zac Hosking, does Nicholson drop minutes as a result?

You would think so, unless Hosking moves into a permanent middle role but I’d be surprised if so.

Joe Tapine has back-to-back scores of 91 and 92, because we really need another premium FRF option to consider…

STORM v WARRIORS

Sunday, 2pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne

Storm: 1. Ryan Papenhuyzen 2. Grant Anderson 3. Jack Howarth 4. Moses Leo 5. Xavier Coates 6. Cameron Munster 7. Jahrome Hughes 8. Stefano Utoikamanu 9. Harry Grant 10. Josh King 11. Shawn Blore 12. Eliesa Katoa 13. Trent Loiero

Bench: 14. Tyran Wishart 15. Alec MacDonald 16. Tui Kamikamica 17. Bronson Garlick

Rseerves: 18. Joe Chan 19. Lazarus Vaalepu 20. Kane Bradley 21. Sualauvi Faalogo 22. Keagan Russell-Smith

Analysis: The Storm enter a red-hot run of games against the Warriors (H), Dolphins (A), Rabbitohs (H), Raiders (Suncorp) and Tigers (H).

Their attack is simply elite, I think you can cash in on a number of players.

Ryan Papenhuyzen, Cam Munster and Jahrome Hughes all loom as terrific buys.

Papy failed to finish the game against Manly, however he confirmed on social media it was only a cork.

Harry Grant has missed out on the majority of the attacking stats among the Storm’s domination, averaging just 53 for the season.

While people are reassessing the HOK slot and who the premium option is, I think Grant is still number one.

He’s averaged 71+ in the past four years, with a high of 78 points in 2022.

He’s dropped $86k so far to sit with a breakeven of 63.

The attack will come and I still believe he’ll finish the season as the top averaging hooker.

Eli Katoa is going from strength-to-strength at NRL level, with his Supercoach output no different with an average of 84 points. Buy.

Warriors: 1. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad 2. Taine Tuaupiki 3. Rocco Berry 4. Ali Leiataua 5. Adam Pompey 6. Chanel Harris-Tavita 7. Luke Metcalf 8. James Fisher-Harris 9. Wayde Egan 10. Mitchell Barnett 11. Kurt Capewell 12. Marata Niukore 13. Erin Clark

Bench: 14. Bunty Afoa 15. Jackson Ford 16. Demitric Vaimauga 17. Leka Halasima

Reserves: 18. Tanah Boyd 20. Jacob Laban 21. Samuel Healey 22. Te Maire Martin 23. Edward Kosi

Analysis: Despite recording three straight wins leading into their bye, I’m not keen to invest in any Warriors with upcoming games against Melbourne and Brisbane.

Wayde Egan could be the one exception as the top averaging hooker this season with 75 points per game.

Most impressive for the crafty No.9 has been his 51 in base per game.

He has just one try and one try-assist to his name having played 80 minutes each week.

He’s $603k with a breakeven of 46.

Luke Metcalf is $497k with a breakeven of 76, I’d avoid playing him in my 17 the next two weeks for anyone holding, however I think he’s a sell this week.

KNIGHTS v TIGERS

Sunday, 4:05pm, McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle

Knights: 1. Kalyn Ponga 2. Kyle McCarthy 3. Dane Gagai 4. Bradman Best 5. Greg Marzhew 6. Fletcher Sharpe 7. Phoenix Crossland 8. Brodie Jones 9. Jayden Brailey 10. Leo Thompson 11. Thomas Cant 12. Kai Pearce-Paul 13. Tyson Frizell

Bench: 14. Matthew Arthur 15. Tyrone Thompson 16. Jermaine McEwen 17. Mathew Croker

Reserves: 18. Paul Bryan 19. Jackson Hastings 20. Riley Jones 21. Francis Manuleleua

Analysis: Having failed to score a point against the Bulldogs it’s probably not the week to invest in Knights players, however with a decent run ahead against the Tigers, Sharks, Warriors, Rabbitohs, Titans and Eels I wouldn’t be selling.

I’ve seen a few cutting ties with Kalyn Ponga with a huge breakeven of 156, but with two home games to come I’ll be holding onto one of the best Supercoach fullbacks in the game.

In big news, Thomas Cant has been named to start in the back-row despite the return of Kai Pearce-Paul from suspension, with Tyson Frizell shifting to lock.

Cant is set for huge cash rises at $274k with a breakeven of -66, averaging 75 points per game in his two games with a base of 70 and 47 in the two fixtures.

The concern though is the looming return of Dylan Lucas in coming weeks, potentially as soon as next round.

On return, Cant likely shifts to the bench or potentially even out of the side.

If we get word Lucas will miss another two weeks I’d comfortably jump on, but it’s a touch risky.

Embed from Getty Images

Tigers: 1. Jahream Bula 2. Sunia Turuva 3. Adam Doueihi 4. Starford To’a 5. Jeral Skelton 6. Lachlan Galvin 7. Jarome Luai 8. Terrell May 9. Apisai Koroisau 10. Fonua Pole 11. Samuela Fainu 12. Alex Seyfarth 13. Alex Twal

Bench: 14. Tallyn Da Silva 15. Royce Hunt 16. Jack Bird 17. Sione Fainu

Reserves: 18. Tony Sukkar 19. Heath Mason 20. Luke Laulilii 21. Brent Naden 22. Kit Laulilii

Analysis: Starford To’a has belted out back-to-back scores of 94 and 65 to sit at $429k with a breakeven of -29.

He’s awkwardly priced, but there’s cash to come for the outside back.

Outside of Terrell May, who is a season keeper, there’s not a lot of interest elsewhere at the Tigers for the time being.

Jarome Luai, Jeral Skelton and Samuela Fainu all return.
