NRL Round 17 Teams: Supercoach Squad Analysis

Former NRL Supercoach runner-up, Tim Williams deep dives into the NRL round 17 team lists with full Supercoach analysis.

NRL

We’re back on a full card of fixtures in round 17; however, fielding a full-strength squad of 18 isn’t getting any easier.

With the Supercoach-relevant, the Roosters on the bye and the injury toll stacking up at a rapid rate, teams are being put to the ultimate test.

In recent weeks, we’ve lost highly owned players such as Fletcher Sharpe, Jack Bostock, Haumole Olakau’atu, Jayden Campbell and Savelio Tamale, just to name a few.

Plenty are without a hooker this week with Sandon Smith on the bye and Ryley Smith suspended (pending judiciary hearing).

With trades getting lower, team management becomes vitally important.

Pencil down your perfect final team for the run home, making note of how many trades it’ll likely take you to get there.

It’ll help in the short term to decide whether or not you can afford to make trades to bolster incoming bye round numbers, or whether you leave yourself slightly shorter to focus on nailing your final team.

The Cooma Stallions didn’t have the best round, scoring 1,281 points to drop 700 spots to 2,700th overall.

We’re still ticking along nicely, but we’re in desperate need of some consistency to avoid those bigger drops.

I’m well placed with 17 trades up the sleeve – including going early on Kikau last week with eyes to some great buys this week – but trades in the bank don’t mean a lot if you’re pulling the wrong triggers, so let’s hope the right moves are made!

Let’s take a look at the NRL Supercoach analysis for round 17, with squad lists courtesy of Fox Sports.

PANTHERS v BULLDOGS

Thursday, 7:50pm, CommBank Stadium, Sydney

Panthers: 1. Dylan Edwards 2. Thomas Jenkins 3. Izack Tago 4. Casey McLean 5. Brian To’o 6. Blaize Talagi 7. Nathan Cleary 8. Moses Leota 9. Mitch Kenny 10. Lindsay Smith 11. Isaiah Papali’i 12. Liam Martin 13. Isaah Yeo

Bench: 14. Brad Schneider 15. Liam Henry 16. Luron Patea 17. Luke Garner

Reserves: 18. Paul Alamoti 19. Matt Eisenhuth 20. Daine Laurie 21. Trent Toelau 22. Luke Sommerton

Analysis: A resurgent Penrith side is back on the radar, but with a bye next week, there’s no need to move yet.

If they can impress against the ladder-leading Bulldogs to prove they’re returning to some degree of their old selves, we can look to cash in from round 19.

Nathan Cleary has been named despite an injury niggle.

Tom Jenkins is likely a sell next week once the 151 points drops out of his rolling average.

He has a breakeven of -1, so there’s likely just one more price rise to come before he peaks.

If he’s your ticket to say Jacob Kiraz – the man he’ll oppose – I think it’s worth going early.

Embed from Getty Images

Bulldogs: 1. Connor Tracey 2. Jacob Kiraz 3. Bronson Xerri 4. Stephen Crichton 5. Marcelo Montoya 6. Matt Burton 7. Toby Sexton 8. Max King 9. Reed Mahoney 10. Daniel Suluka-Fifita 11. Viliame Kikau 12. Jacob Preston 13. Bailey Hayward

Bench: 14. Kurt Mann 15. Harry Hayes 16. Josh Curran 17. Lachlan Galvin

Reserves: 19. Kurtis Morrin 20. Mitchell Woods 21. Samuel Hughes 22. Jethro Rinakama 23. Blake Taaffe

Analysis: The Bulldogs have finished their byes for the season and hence become very relevant.

Jacob Kiraz is rightly among the most traded-in players this week, Fletcher Sharpe to him is a bit of a no-brainer in my eyes.

He’s $753k with a breakeven of 76, going up against a fairly weak Penrith edge of Jenkins and McLean.

In two games back from injury, he has 37 runs, 10 tackle breaks and 10 offloads.

Simply a must-have.

Viliame Kikau appears to have finally hit the Supercoach heights he’s promised his entire career.

He’s priced at $621k with a breakeven of 26, averaging an excellent 63 points for the season.

BetBuzz have partnered up with SC Playbook for the remainder of the NRL season! We’ll be dropping unique SCPB markets each week. Check them out here!

His 38 in base is poor for an 80-minute back rower, but what he lacks there, he makes up for in power stats.

In the past two games, he’s had 14 tackle breaks and nine offloads.

He’s upped his base and power from 43 last year to 55 this year (shout out to Fish for the lay-up on this stat).

If you buy, there will likely be the odd 40-50 point score, but it should offset with 90+ scores too.

He has great upside as a focal point of the Bulldogs’ attack and will prove a nice point of difference for the run home.

Back-row partner Jacob Preston is almost as enticing with a season average of 92 points.

Lachy Galvin remains on the bench.

SEA EAGLES v TIGERS

Friday, 6pm, Brookvale Oval, Sydney

Sea Eagles: 1. Lehi Hopoate 2. Tommy Talau 3. Tolutau Koula 4. Tom Trbojevic 5. Reuben Garrick 6. Luke Brooks 7. Daly Cherry-Evans 8. Matthew Lodge 9. Jazz Tevaga 10. Siosiua Taukeiaho 11. Corey Waddell 12. Ben Trbojevic 13. Jake Trbojevic

Bench: 14. Jake Simpkin 15. Ethan Bullemor 16. Nathan Brown 17. Toafofoa Sipley

Reserves: 18. Michael Chee Kam 19. Jason Saab 20. Clayton Faulalo 21. Joey Walsh 22. Caleb Navale

Analysis: Manly play the next major bye round, then sit out the mini in round 19.

Anthony Seibold has pulled the trigger, moving Tom Trbojevic to centre and Lehi Hopoate to fullback.

It’s been stated it’s likely a temporary move while Tommy looks to regain his best form, while he’s also expected to roam from centre.

In five games at left centre in the past, Turbo scored 45 in 2024, and then 80, 70, 83 and 75 all the back in 2016 (shout out Rando for the lay-up).

This will also see Reuben Garrick shift to the wing outside Turbo, which looms as a potential point-scoring gold mine.

He last played wing in 2023, where he featured on the sting in nine games (excluding one injury impact game), averaging 80.44 points per game.

He looks like a nice vice-captaincy play this week and moving forward each round.

Lehi Hopoate is $663k and has a breakeven of 120 due to the 2 point game where he suffered a head knock.

He’s a genuine buy at fullback or wing – preferably fullback – but is he in your best 18 for the run home?

At fullback, I think he can be, if he shifts back to the wing, I’m a little less convinced purely due to the calibre of players available in the position.

Tigers: 1. Heath Mason 2. Sunia Turuva 3. Adam Doueihi 4. Starford To’a 5. Jeral Skelton 6. Jarome Luai 7. Latu Fainu 8. Terrell May 9. Apisai Koroisau 10. Fonua Pole 11. Samuela Fainu 12. Jack Bird 13. Alex Twal

Bench: 14. Tallyn Da Silva 15. Alex Seyfarth 16. Sione Fainu 17. Tony Sukkar

Reserves: 18. Luke Laulilii 19. Charlie Murray 20. Kit Laulilii 21. Charlie Staines 22. Tristan Hope

Analysis: The Tigers play both incoming mini bye rounds, and have their final bye of the season in round 23.

Jahream Bula is out for around a month, which will see Heath Mason shift to fullback and Latu Fainu start in the halves.

For anyone with a spot at five-eighth vacant, Fainu looks a great buy to me.

He’s $289k with a breakeven of -11.

He has two decent match-ups incoming, including a depleted Roosters next week, and looks a promising Supercoach prospect.

He’s a strong ball-running five-eighth who’ll bust tackles and offload.

He’ll provide a valuable extra number in coming rounds that should easily be able to turn into Jayden Campbell or Cam Munster once he peaks, or just sit as a reserve five-eighth.

KNIGHTS v RAIDERS

Friday, 8pm, McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle

Knights: 1. Kalyn Ponga 2. Dominic Young 3. Dane Gagai 4. Bradman Best 5. James Schiller 6. Jackson Hastings 7. Jack Cogger 8. Jacob Saifiti 9. Jayden Brailey 10. Tyson Frizell 11. Dylan Lucas 12. Kai Pearce-Paul 13. Phoenix Crossland

Bench: 14. Brodie Jones 15. Thomas Cant 16. Jermaine McEwen 17. Mathew Croker

Reserves: 18. Elijah Leaumoana 19. Tyson Gamble 20. Fletcher Hunt 21. Greg Marzhew 22. Jack Hetherington

Analysis: Despite showing some return to form, it’s hard to go near the Knights with byes incoming in round 18 and 22, and a savage run of games against the Raiders, Storm, Warriors and Raiders to come.

Do note their next three are at home, which helps, but it’s still daunting.

Fletcher Sharpe suffered a frightening injury and will miss an extended period.

He’s a sell at $719k.

Greg Marzhew has been listed on the extended reserves, as he pushes to return from an arm injury.

Raiders: 1. Kaeo Weekes 2. Jed Stuart 3. Matthew Timoko 4. Sebastian Kris 5. Xavier Savage 6. Ethan Strange 7. Jamal Fogarty 8. Josh Papali’i 9. Tom Starling 10. Joseph Tapine 11. Simi Sasagi 12. Zac Hosking 13. Corey Horsburgh

Bench: 14. Owen Pattie 15. Noah Martin 16. Morgan Smithies 17. Ata Mariota

Reserves 18. Trey Mooney 19. Pasami Saulo 20. Chevy Stewart 21. Danny Levi 22. Ethan Sanders

Analysis: The Raiders have two byes to come in round 19 and 24, but do feature in next week’s final major bye round.

Despite their excellent form, I don’t love many of their players as buys due to the draw.

After they cover next week, there’ll be numerous players that loom as sells such as Zac Hosking, Corey Horsburgh, Jamal Fogarty and Tom Starling.

Bottom-dollar rookie, Jed Stuart, is a popular buy this week; he scored just 45 with a try against the Tigers.

He won’t see price movement this week, so I’d avoid and consider next week if he scores well against the Knights.

Josiah Karapani looks like a far better cheapie buy this week, despite the slightly higher price tag.

Post round 19 bye, Hudson Young will be an attractive prospect, provided he’s available after dropping out this week.

He’s $749k with a breakeven of 113 and a season average of 81 points.

He looks a definite keeper for the run home once Origin is over.

BRONCOS v WARRIORS

Saturday, 3pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

Broncos: 1. Reece Walsh 2. Josiah Karapani 3. Kotoni Staggs 4. Gehamat Shibasaki 5. Jesse Arthars 6. Ezra Mam 7. Adam Reynolds 8. Corey Jensen 9. Cory Paix 10. Payne Haas 11. Brendan Piakura 12. Jordan Riki 13. Patrick Carrigan

Bench: 14. Billy Walters 15. Kobe Hetherington 16. Xavier Willison 17. Jack Gosiewski

Reserves: 18. Tyson Smoothy 19. Selwyn Cobbo 20. Deine Mariner 21. Jaiyden Hunt 22. Ben Talty

Analysis: The Broncos play the next two major bye rounds and then sit out round 20.

Karapani looks like a gift from the Supercoach Gods in a time of need.

Major bye coverage = Tick

Sub $300k = Tick

Major cash incoming = Tick

Point-scoring upside = Tick

While plenty have shifted focus from cash to points with their trades, I think Karapani potentially has both and is a near must.

He’s $290k with a breakeven of -85, with a 97-point score in his rolling average for a few more weeks.

He lands in the golden spot on the Broncos’ left wing, with Reece Walsh back and firing.

Is there a risk? Of course there is…

He’s a volatile winger with poor job security.

He could score 15 points this week and get dropped.

But for now, he looks good for at least another week or two where there’s good cash incoming.

If he maintains his form, and Brisbane finish with a flurry, he could be a borderline keeper as sixth or seventh CTW.

Realistically, he’s probably an easy stepping stone to a gun post-Origin.

Payne Haas is absurd, knocking out 108 points post Perth Origin with an injury that saw him leave the field for treatment.

For anyone who sold, make sure you have a plan to get him back in after the Broncos’ bye in round 20.

You could buy back this week, but with an ongoing injury concern, Origin duties the following week and another bye shortly after, I think it’s worth waiting.

Warriors: 1. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad 2. Edward Kosi 3. Adam Pompey 4. Rocco Berry 5. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck 6. Chanel Harris-Tavita 7. Luke Metcalf 8. James Fisher-Harris 9. Wayde Egan 10. Marata Niukore 11. Kurt Capewell 12. Jacob Laban 13. Erin Clark

Bench: 14. Te Maire Martin 15. Jackson Ford 16. Demitric Vaimauga 17. Leka Halasima

Reserves: 18. Tanner Stowers-Smith 20. Tanah Boyd 21. Samuel Healey 22. Bunty Afoa 23. Taine Tuaupiki

Analysis: The Warriors have the bye next week, so there’s no need to move on any.

However, they do have a spectacular run home after that.

The Bulldogs are the only current top eight side they face in their final nine games post-Origin period.

Luke Metcalf has been named to play despite an injury concern last week.

DRAGONS v EELS

Saturday, 5:30pm, WIN Stadium, Wollongong

Dragons: 1. Clinton Gutherson 2. Corey Allan 3. Moses Suli 4. Valentine Holmes 5. Christian Tuipulotu 6. Lyhkan King-Togia 7. Kyle Flanagan 8. Emre Guler 9. Damien Cook 10. David Klemmer 11. Toby Couchman 12. Jaydn Su’A 13. Jack de Belin

Bench: 14. Jacob Liddle 15. Hamish Stewart 16. Viliami Fifita 17. Luciano Leilua

Reserves: 18. Loko Jnr Pasifiki Tonga 19. Lachlan Ilias 20. Blake Lawrie 21. Nicholas Tsougranis 22. Nathan Lawson

Analysis: The Dragons have finished their byes for the season, despite this, they’re very hard to entertain as trade options on current form.

Owners can hang tight with the likes of Toby Couchman, Lyhkan King-Togia and Nathan Lawson until after next week, then assess their hold or sell credentials.

Couchman looks a likely long-term hold, the latter pair will likely be immediate sells.

Lawson has been dropped this week, which is a blow for those hoping for the extra number next week.

You could hold and hope he plays, or just use him as the ticket to Karapani.

Eels: 1. Isaiah Iongi 2. Zac Lomax 3. Jordan Samrani 4. Sean Russell 5. Josh Addo-Carr 6. Dylan Brown 7. Dean Hawkins 8. Jack Williams 9. Joey Lussick 10. Junior Paulo 11. Kelma Tuilagi 12. Kitione Kautoga 13. J’maine Hopgood

Bench: 14. Dylan Walker 15. Matt Doorey 16. Charlie Guymer 17. Joash Papali’i

Reserves: 18. Dan Keir 19. Toni Mataele 20. Brendan Hands 21. Ronald Volkman 22. Samuel Loizou

Analysis: The Eels have the bye next week and remain without Mitch Moses, along with Will Penisini and Ryley Smith, so let’s reassess further come round 19.

They also have quite a tough run home which doesn’t help.

Zac Lomax is the only tempting buy this week at $697k with a breakeven of 99.

He hasn’t scored a try this season without Mitch Moses on his edge.

Despite that, he’s still scoring well enough; however, he’s having to do it the hard way with a relentless work-rate.

While no Moses this week remains a concern, back home against the Dragons will have him fired up.

He could deadset bust the NRL hit-ups record this week as he looks to make a statement against the Red V.

The draw post Origin against the Panthers, Raiders, Broncos and Storm is fairly brutal, but I think Lomax is fairly fixture-proof and is a keeper anyway.

I can see why people would move this week, I’ll look to move on him post-Origin though.

Ryley Smith has been suspended for two games.

He was the definition of a slow-burn for owners, but he’s gradually made $225k and actually played off the bench against the Titans.

At $424k with a breakeven of 66, you can look to move on.

The issue at the moment is to who?

Harry Grant and Connor Watson look the two main plays at hooker to me, but Origin three on the horizon doesn’t make them ideal pick ups.

DOLPHINS v RABBITOHS

Saturday, 7:50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

Dolphins: 1. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow 2. Jamayne Isaako 3. Jake Averillo 4. Herbie Farnworth 5. Junior Tupou 6. Kodi Nikorima 7. Isaiya Katoa 8. Francis Molo 9. Jeremy Marshall-King 10. Mark Nicholls 11. Kulikefu Finefeuiaki 12. Oryn Keeley 13. Kurt Donoghoe

Bench: 14. Harrison Graham 15. Connelly Lemuelu 16. Ray Stone 17. Josh Kerr

Reserves: 18. Sean O’Sullivan 19. Max Feagai 20. Aublix Tawha 21. Tevita Naufahu 22. Peter Hola

Analysis: While very Supercoach relevant in terms of highly owned players, the Dolphins have incoming byes in round 18 and 21, which makes them hard to go near.

Herbie Farnworth’s try-scoring streak came to an end against the Knights, he’s relentless Supercoach scoring did not.

He notched 106 points with three line break assists to his name.

He’s always had the ball-running prowess, adding the ball-playing to his repertoire has turned him into a Supercoach behemoth.

I feel he’s the only season keeper in the Dolphins side, while Jamayne Isaako’s keeper credentials will be dictated by the Dolphins’ form on the run home.

They’re firing, but their injury toll is building up heavily, which is a concern.

Jack Bostock suffered a devastating ACL injury last week and will miss the remainder of the season.

Embed from Getty Images

Rabbitohs: 1. Latrell Mitchell 2. Alex Johnston 3. Jack Wighton 4. Campbell Graham 5. Tyrone Munro 6. Cody Walker 7. Jamie Humphreys 8. Sean Keppie 9. Siliva Havili 10. Keaon Koloamatangi 11. Euan Aitken 12. Tallis Duncan 13. Jai Arrow

Bench: 14. Peter Mamouzelos 15. Lachlan Hubner 16. Davvy Moale 17. Tevita Tatola

Reserves: 18. Isaiah Tass 19. Liam Le Blanc 20. Jayden Sullivan 21. Ryan Gray 22. Jacob Host

Analysis: The Rabbitohs play next week’s major bye round, but will sit out rounds 19 and 26.

Anyone for an Alex Johnston flyer?

He’s closing in on rugby league’s try-scoring record, and the Supercoach scores are rising as a result.

He’s $580k with a breakeven of 8, with recent scores of 137, 55 (no Latrell), 53 and 102.

He’s averaging 69 points per game this season, but in the four games he’s played with Latrell Mitchell at fullback, he’s averaging 85 points.

The Rabbitohs run home is fairly soft, and you can always comfortably sit him for any harder match-ups.

He could average 100 on the run home, or he could average 20, so I’ll leave it to you if you’re wanting to roll the dice.

Latrell himself looks an elite option for the run home, but as he’ll miss rounds 18 and 19, there’s no need to move yet.

Cody Walker returns from injury in a bigger boost for the Johnston prospects.

STORM v SHARKS

Sunday, 2pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne

Storm: 1. Ryan Papenhuyzen 2. Sualauvi Faalogo 3. Grant Anderson 4. Nick Meaney 5. Xavier Coates 6. Cameron Munster 7. Jahrome Hughes 8. Stefano Utoikamanu 9. Harry Grant 10. Josh King 11. Shawn Blore 12. Eliesa Katoa 13. Trent Loiero

Bench: 14. Tyran Wishart 15. Alec MacDonald 16. Tui Kamikamica 17. Nelson Asofa-Solomona

Reserves: 18. Ativalu Lisati 19. Bronson Garlick 20. Joe Chan 21. Keagan Russell-Smith 22. Kane Bradley

Analysis: The Storm have finished their byes for the season, making them ultra relevant, although they have been all year anyway.

With plenty running without a hooker this week, Harry Grant looks primed for picking, kind of…

Despite running just a 61-point average this season, I do think he’s the premier option in the position, along with perhaps Connor Watson.

He’s priced at the bargain rate of $586k with a breakeven following scores of 83 and 80.

In past seasons, he’s averaged 71, 73, 78 and 74, suggesting he’s very under-priced.

My concern is that he’s already missed a lengthy period this season with a hamstring injury, played 80 in Origin at hooker, backed up from that and played 84 minutes against the Rabbitohs and will do the same at Origin level next week.

Injury-risk concerns me for a player that will miss round 18 and will be a chance at a rest in round 19, however I also don’t want to waste a trade on a hooker that I won’t keep.

It’s not ideal, but I think he’s probably the play.

Cam Munster dropped $63k last week to $645k, sitting with a breakeven of 99.

He should be a nice price for those who sold to pick him back up after the Origin period.

Sharks: 1. William Kennedy 2. Sione Katoa 3. Jesse Ramien 4. Siosifa Talakai 5. Ronaldo Mulitalo 6. Braydon Trindall 7. Nicho Hynes 8. Addin Fonua-Blake 9. Blayke Brailey 10. Oregon Kaufusi 11. Briton Nikora 12. Teig Wilton 13. Cameron McInnes

Bench: 14. Daniel Atkinson 15. Jesse Colquhoun 16. Toby Rudolf 17. Braden Hamlin-Uele

Reserves: 18. Billy Burns 19. Hohepa Puru 20. Niwhai Puru 21. Chris Veaila 22. Jayden Berrell

Analysis: The Sharks have the bye next week, and again in round 25, so let’s reassess from round 19.

Siosifa Talakai scored 73 in his first game at centre for the year, scoring a try and notching 30 in base.

Briton Nikora has recorded back-to-back tonnes and now sits at $606k with a breakeven of -2.

While I’m a content owner, I genuinely believe there are better 2RF picks on the horizon post Origin.

TITANS v COWBOYS

Sunday, 4:05pm, Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast

Titans: 1. AJ Brimson 2. Alofiana Khan-Pereira 3. Jojo Fifita 4. Phillip Sami 5. Allan Fitzgibbon 6. Kieran Foran 7. Tom Weaver 8. Jaimin Jolliffe 9. Sam Verrills 10. Reagan Campbell-Gillard 11. Chris Randall 12. Beau Fermor 13. Tino Fa’asuamaleaui

Bench: 14. Jacob Alick-Wiencke 15. Moeaki Fotuaika 16. Klese Haas 17. Iszac Fa’asumaleaui

Reserves: 18. Jaylan De Groot 19. Arama Hau 20. Tukimihia Simpkins 21. Sean Mullany 22. Brian Kelly

Analysis: The Titans have the bye next week and are just a basket case in general, avoid.

Jayden Campbell is unavailable due to a head knock, which saw him score just 8 points against the Eels.

Non-owners can pick him up at a bargain price at likely sub $550k after the Round 18 bye.

Beau Fermor was a popular pick last week and managed just 59 points; however, it was entirely in base, which is excellent going.

Tino Fa’asuamaleaui returns to the starting side after playing off the bench last week.

Cowboys: 1. Scott Drinkwater 2. Robert Derby 3. Jaxon Purdue 4. Zac Laybutt 5. Murray Taulagi 6. Jake Clifford 7. Tom Dearden 8. Jordan McLean 9. Reece Robson 10. Sam McIntyre 11. John Bateman 12. Jeremiah Nanai 13. Reuben Cotter

Bench: 14. Harrison Edwards 15. Thomas Mikaele 16. Griffin Neame 17. Coen Hess

Reserves: 18. Thomas Duffy 19. Kaiden Lahrs 20. Kai O’Donnell 21. Braidon Burns 22. Marly Bitungane

Analysis: The Cowboys play both incoming major bye rounds and have their final bye in round 27.

The volatility of their form, which is declining, is an obvious concern.

Scott Drinkwater is an enticing captaincy option this week against the leaky Titans defence, but there’s a clear risk in the fact he’s had lows of 33 and 14 in the past five games.

He did, however, put 132 on them earlier in the season, and he also had scores of 144 and 59 against them last season.

Jaxon Purdue has a three-round average of just 44, sitting at $540k with a breakeven of 114.

He’s been moved back to centre this week, where he flew earlier in the season.

I also like the return of Clifford for Drinky’s prospects.

The sell would be tempting for owners, but with the Titans clash against an under-strength Melbourne next week, I’d be very tempted to hold and just cop any associated price drop.

He certainly doesn’t appear a season keeper, but I think you could hold for another fortnight.

That being said, I wouldn’t begrudge any sellers this week that are also well enough set-up for round 18.
