Clem’s Captains: Round 19 NRL SuperCoach Skippers

Former sixth-placed finisher Clementine Cassidy analyses the best captaincy candidates for NRL Supercoach Round 19.

NRL

Stat: The Tigers have never lost a game that I have watched live with Max Bryden.

And I have watched two with him now – the Massacre of Manly, Leichardt 2024; and the Eradication of the Roosters, Allianz 2025.

I’m basically a mascot.

And what an absolutely epic time it was at Allianz, in the sun with everyone, watching Teddy score… ahhh 77.

But despite the Captain Teddy maths not mathing – last Sunday arvo at the Playbook Day at the Footy was the place to be! It was so good!

And how goods the SuperCoach community! Just an absolute bunch of legends!

Now, let us address the elephant in the room, which is that apparently, Teddy is a God Stats can be exactly the same, to the exact day as the previous year – but if the three Fainu brothers are playing in the opposing team, it cancels out any statistical probability of a ton.

It is maths. And also physics. And an oversight on my behalf.

Now let’s get into this Round, and obviously the Captain is Teddy because he is not playing against any Fainu brothers (I have carefully checked), but I have to write a whole article so let’s go through game-by-game:

BetBuzz have partnered up with SC Playbook for the remainder of the NRL season! The SC Playbook multi of the week is Viliame Kikau and Brendan Piakura to combine for two or more tries in round 19. FOLLOW HERE!

Sharks v Dolphins

After winning just one game in the past five (the bye doesn’t count), Friday night sees an aquatic battle with the Sharks attempting to reclaim their title as the Apex Predators of the Ocean. Taking on the Dolphins who are comfortably wearing that crown right now – there’s a couple of likely VCs in this battle:

The safe one: Herbie – a 3-round average of 114, and how can you not VC him? Worst – how can you not own him? The SC app tells me he ranks first in tackle busts and offloads for 18 rounds – that is insane. Further – he has not scored a try for two games – that is an omen, that is all.

The risk: Nicho Hynes – A 3-round average of 70, and only two tons to his name this season doesn’t exactly scream VC when you have the likes of the ton-up King Herbie on the field – BUT surely, surely, he is due. (Insert the sound of wishful thinking here). But actually – he is the second highest averaging halfback of the season, and the Sharks are fresh off a bye and out for blood – if you like a risk, take it.

Knights v Storm

Well, what do we have here? A classic Saturday Arvo Battle of the Mullets! What a show! And Newcastle definitely knows how to mullet, with Fletcher Hunt taking on the fullback role with possibly the second most glorious mullet in the business. But it’s his opposing mullet we’re interested in as a VC option:

Ryan The Glorious Mullet Papenhuyzen – Calf tightness scuttled many a SuperCoachers bye planning last round, but our Lil Papi is back, and we are thankful, and despite a less than desirable 3-round average of 62, remains an option at VC. Can he ton up vs a Knights side sans Ponga and Sharpe? Or will Fletcher Hunt’s stunning mullet come out on top? Stay tuned!

Dragons v Roosters

The Tigers beat the Roosters last Sunday. At the home of the Roosters. That is all I need to know to determine that the Roosters are going to be out for absolute blood when they take on the Dragons late Saturday arvo.

Teddy – Okay so yes he only scored a 77 last round, but he’s Teddy and he’s in form and he’s scored 4 tries in his last 3 games, and his 3-round average is 94, and he’s the number 1 ranked fullback in SC right now, and he’s playing the Dragons who have no Fainu brothers in their side – and who it must be noted, let Weekes score 3 tries against them just last week. Captain with confidence friends.

Cowboys vs Bulldogs

The Bulldogs have lost two in a row and now sit third on the ladder and this is not a drill. The Cowboys were just 6 points short of a win over the Storm last week and are coming off the jubilation of having that QLD God, Tom Dearden, tear it up in Origin last Wednesday night, and now have a deity to inspire them to a win.

Kiraz – This is a risky play, and please only do so if you have a feeling. 18th man for the Blues, you’d take a punt that he is absolutely frothing at the bit to get on the field and take it to the team who boast a bunch of Queenslanders in their midst. A 3-round average of 80 is pretty nice too. Can he tackle bust and offload his way to a ton? With only 4 tries to his name so far this season – you’d like to think he’s due.

Scotty D – The second people group trade him out – the second he goes on a ton-fest. 99 vs the Storm last week, 134 vs the Titans the week before. Five tons to his name this season. A 3-round average of 102. He’s an option. He’s always an option. Don’t trade him out every again.

Warriors vs Tigers

No further comment. I will enjoy this game on Sunday arvo sans the additional heart palpitations of a SC Captaincy (although how nice would it be in Tanah Boyd tonned up).

Other Sunday Games

I’m running out of time because I’m writing this on my lunch break, so I’m just going to put one more option here:

Reece Walsh – 18th man for Queensland, and just like Kiraz above – surely he’s chomping at the bit to get out on the field and do some things. He’s got a 3-round average of 80, he’s due a ton, and the Broncos are coming off a victory nobody saw coming vs the Bulldogs. Add to this that the Titans have let the last two fullbacks who played them (Scotty D and Iongi) both ton up with a combined 238 points – and if you are one of the 5% who own Reece Walsh – take a risk please.

Verdict

Teddy for VC or Captaincy. It is a must. Take your pick from the others. That is all.

And on that note – have a beautiful weekend and I hope your Captain tons up for you and the Warriors win.
