Supercoach World Cup | Tournament Market Watch

Supercoach expert Oscar Henderson dives into the odds that matter for the upcoming Supercoach World Cup

EPL

The World Cup is just over a week away now, and I couldn’t be any more excited for the biggest sporting tournament in the world to kick off.

And just to add to the excitement, Supercoach has brought out a World Cup game for us to play.

Before reading this article, I highly suggest you check out Harry West’s article, where he goes through all the basics and strategies you need to know for this new game mode.

To quote him: “Here, a player doesn’t blank for a week; he’s gone for good, often without warning.”

In other words, we want to be targeting nations we think will go the furthest in the tournament, as once a nation gets knocked out, those players become useless in our sides.

Who is going to go all the way this World Cup? Well, that is anyone’s guess.

That’s why, for this article, I have decided to take an objective look at how things might pan out.

To do this, I have collected some betting odds that we will go through.

These can be a useful reference for Supercoach, as these betting platforms turn a large amount of information into a single probability number for us that we can relate to our Supercoach picks.

Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Nations to target

First, let’s take a look at nations as a whole.

Supercoach World Cup consists of 8 rounds, finishing in round 8 with the third-place and Final game.

This means the four nations that make the semi-finals will play in all 8 rounds of Supercoach, but no one else.

Why is this important?

It isn’t the be-all and end-all, but as I mentioned above, once a player’s nation is knocked out of the tournament they become dead weight in our sides.

Supercoach has given us 6 trades per round to deal with this carnage, but even still, you want to be targeting players from the sides that are advancing through so you can field a strong team every round.

Not only that, but the sides that are winning and advancing are more than likely scoring goals and keeping clean sheets, or more importantly to us, reeling in those Supercoach points.

Odds To Reach Semi-Final

2France2.50
3England2.75
4Argentina3.25
5Brazil3.25
6Portugal3.50
7Germany3.75
8Netherlands4.75
9Norway5.00
10Belgium6.50

Above, I have the top ten countries most likely to play all 8 rounds of Supercoach, according to betting odds.

The tier 1 favourites include Spain, France, and England.

These heavyweight sides are stacked top-to-bottom with talent, and it is no surprise they are all expected to be there come the pointy end of the tournament.

Although World Cups always have plenty of surprises and upsets in store, lock and load players from these nations with confidence.

Next up, in tier 2 we have Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, and Germany.

These sides each have their own legitimate cases for why they could win it all, but also reasons why they may be sent packing earlier than hoped.

Still, you would expect these nations to perform well and be pushing for a final eight spot at the very least.

Finally, three more dark-horse-type teams that the betting platforms are holding out hope for.

The Netherlands, Norway, and Belgium all have their respective superstars, which give each of them a very high ceiling.

I don’t mind picking some players from these sides, but I wouldn’t be loading up too much past the group stage.

Forwards to target

Next, we will take a look at some specific players that odds makers are favouring for a big tournament.

To start with, we will look at the top goalscorer odds to try find who may be the best forward options for our Supercoach sides.

Top Goalscorer Odds

9Lautaro MartinezFWDArgentina26.00
10Vinicius Jr.FWDBrazil26.00
11Julian AlvarezFWDArgentina29.00
12RaphinhaFWDBrazil29.00

Expectedly, this list consists mainly of the main forwards from the nations we have already touched on that are expected to go all the way.

In tier 1, we have Mbappe and Kane as the two standout favourites to take home top goalscorer for the tournament.

This should be no surprise to anyone: both world-class goalscorers, both on penalties, both playing for heavyweight nations.

In fact, they also account for the last two Golden Boot winners at World Cups, Kane in 2018 and Mbappe in 2022.

In tier 2, we then have Messi, Oyarzabal, Haaland, and Yamal.

Yamal is heading into this World Cup as the best player in the world in many people’s opinion, playing for the favourites to win it all.

Yet, he sits 6th best in top goalscorer odds, I would say mainly to do with a lingering injury concern he is carrying that may see him miss the start of Spain’s campaign.

His teammate Oyarzabal is also up there, leading the line for the tournament favourites, and oozing goal-scoring class himself.

Speaking of goal-scoring class, Erling Haaland might be the most prolific striker in the world right now, while Messi, well, he speaks for himself.

We then have our dark-horse picks in Ronaldo, Dembele, Martinez, Vinicius Jr., Alvarez, and Raphinha.

Each of these guys has an outside chance, but I would not be relying on them for guaranteed goals.

Midfielders to target

We now move on to odds to rack up the most assists for the tournament.

For this section, I want to focus on the midfielders on the list, as we already went through most of the forwards above.

The tied favourites to take out the title of most assists are Bruno Fernandes and Michael Olise.

This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.

Fernandes broke the Premier League record with a ludicrous 21 assists this past season, and Olise wasn’t far off, bagging 19 assists of his own in the Bundesliga to tie the second most assists in a season ever.

I don’t expect either of these guys to shy away on the world’s biggest stage, so hopefully the assists can keep flowing.

The other three midfielders on this list are Wirtz, De Bruyne, and Cherki.

I expect De Bruyne and Cherki to play very similar roles as a number 10, pulling the strings behind strong front threes.

Wirtz could also play this role for Germany, although they also have Musiala, so Wirtz may find himself even more advanced.

All three guys have the class, the role, and play for strong nations, making for solid Supercoach picks.

Goalkeepers to target

We now move to goalkeepers.

Yes, I am well aware I skipped defenders, but most of this goalkeeper talk you can relate back to defenders, as a clean sheet for a goalkeeper also means a clean sheet for the defenders from that nation.

It must be noted these odds below are actually for Golden Glove, which is not based purely on most clean sheets, instead just awarded to whoever is deemed the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

Golden Glove Odds

6David RayaGKPSpain8.00
7Jordan PickfordGKPEngland8.00
8Diogo CostaGKPPortugal11.00
9Manuel NeuerGKPGermany17.00

First, let’s get the double-ups out of the way.

From this list, you can see that both Simon and Raya appear from Spain, as well as Alisson and Ederson, who both play for Brazil.

At this stage, I expect Unai Simon to be the starter for Spain and Alisson to start for Brazil, but of course, make sure to check team sheets on gameday.

Martinez and Simon can be seen as the tied favourites to take home the Golden Glove award.

Martinez is the reigning Golden Glove winner, and Simon is playing for the competition favourites, so these are pretty self-explanatory.

Looking through the rest of the guys on the list, the trend is clear: target the goalkeepers from the best nations.

This is only logical, as the better the team, the more likely they are to keep those elusive but important clean sheets.
